Pete Rock, is the stage name of American producer, rapper, and DJ, Peter Phillips from New York, known for merging jazz and hip hop.
He rose to prominence in the 1990s, as half of the duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth, who he met at school. Having started off as a DJ, he began producing, and put out his debut EP, �Souled Out� in 1991, which was followed by their debut album, �Mecca and the Soul Brothers�. The pair were signed by Elektra Records, and they released �The Main Ingredient� in 1994. During this time, Rock was producing songs by other artists, such as Down With the King for Run-DMC and The World Is Yours for Nas, as well remix singles for Jeru the Damaja, Public Enemy, and The Notorious B.I.G. He released his solo album, �Soul Survivor� in 1998, which was followed by a further eight albums, including 2015�s, �PeteStrumentals 2�.
