Temperature were hitting the 42 degrees Celsius mark ( 107 degrees Fahrenheit in old money ) when my twin brother Stephen and I decided to drop into Taberna Pompeyana, been here before on previous holidays to Madrid, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit. A great looking tavern, its got a Roman baths theme to it,wonderful decor and furnishings, a cool looking serving bar, risqué wall art and lots of seating options spread throughout this tavern, its a great place to unwind in. We grabbed a table were we ordered bottles of beer from Virgen Brewery, these were served in excellent condition being iced cold and accompanied with a tasty tapa meal which was delicious and much appreciated, we chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular tavern. My beer was really good, its brewed locally in Madrid, a light and hoppy lager style beer bursting with taste and very easy to drink, its got a delicious aroma and aftertaste, when this beer is served freezing cold as in this tavern its such a refreshing beer indeed. We both really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to here we had a great. Taberna Pompeyana is easy to locate along Calle Alvarez Gato,a street and area teeming with pubs, bars, cafe's and restaurants and some amazing architecture and a major tourist destination. Opening hours are; Monday ,12.30pm till 1am. Tuesday, closed. Wednesday & Thursday, 12.30pm till 1am. Friday & Saturday, 12.30pm till 2am. Sunday, 12.30pm till midnight A great and unique tavern, well worth checking out if you're in the vibrant Huertas neighbourhood.

Taberna La Pompeyana is an excellent bar and restaurant on C.de Álvarez Gato were there are many place's to visit. This is a very good bar and restaurant with an excellent interior as it has a Pompeian styled interior with many interesting murals throughout its whole interior. With superb fixtures and features and lot's of good seating option's and to top it off it has great staff who make your visit a really memorable occasion. On our visit we had a few bottle's of La Virgen lager an excellent lager which were served iced cold and well priced. This is a superb bar and restaurant and an unusual bar and restaurant as there ain't a lot of bar and restaurants with a Pompeian themed interior.Well worth visiting and very easy to find from Sol metro stop it's a short walk away.(This is my 1st review of Taberna La Pompeyana). Opening Hours. Monday-12.30-Onwards. Tuesday-Closed. Wednesday-Sunday-12.30-Onwards. Public Transport. Metro Stop. Sol metro stop.

Nice spot, tucked in a back alley near the Plaza del Sol. The food was good, not great and the service was similar. Eat in the outside seating.

Great for sangria off the Plaza Santa Ana. Didn’t eat here so can’t comment on the food. Opposite the Brutal Bar which was heaving.

Even tho their menu is nothing special, this place is definitely a must- see :) I just loved their interior and all the details, you can see straight away that someone put a lot of time and energy into it 😊 oh and their house wine is on point 🥰 🫶

Interiør ok. The food was horrible. Calimares too Big without taste. We had a cheesebplatter with some Old pieces of cheese, probably saves from another set of guest.

This was a quirky, interesting little bar/restaurant. The atmosphere was quite nice but the food was bad, and I mean bad. It's unusual to get actually bad food these days but this was. The empanadas were soggy, undercooked, unseasoned. The patatas fritas were large grilled potatoes that had a sort of greenish tinge to them and tasted truly awful. The tortilla was undercooked and had no seasoning whatsoever. By the time our last dish arrived ,the provolone, none of us even wanted to try it. We sent it back and asked for the bill (we still paid for it). Service was less than friendly too! Have a drink here by all means but I highly recommend you avoid the food.

Service is a bit slow. The food is overheated and actually spoiled. Got here by recommendation of guide . I think they just pay guides. My recommendation - keep yourself out of this place.

My wife and I came across this place whilst looking for some early evening dinner. We saw the menu outside and quite fancied the look of the pizzas. We got in and were immediately served and shown to a table for 2. The decor is real spit and sawdust with a very rustic feel. The atmosphere has a nice buzz and the waiters all shout the orders across the restaurant which is really unique and has a nice fun feel to it. We were served by Sufian who is a really friendly Spanish speaking waiter who explained he is from Bangladesh, he was very polite and friendly and gave my wife and I very good customer service which was helpful and impressive. The 4 glasses of local wine we ordered was very good and the complimentary tapas were really nice. We got a Caesar salad and a Spanish ham pizza which was also very good. All in all it was a very quick service, great tasting food and high quality ingredients, an excellent service from the staff, and at less than 30 EUR very good value for money - we would highly recommend.

Nice decor but the food was mediocre at best. We had the margharita pizza. It wasn’t bad, but not good either. The crust was pre-made and they used dry basil, rather than fresh basil. Later, we were given some free paella. The prawns were small, we found mussel shells, but no mussels, and the rice wasn’t thoroughly cooked. Glad we didn’t have to pay for it. the service was fine, but there were only 2 other people in the restaurant when were were there.

We were extremely disappointed in the food and wine served. We ordered a Caesar salad and paella to share, with rose and Rioja. The salad bared no resemblance to anything Caesarean, or from Pompey!!! The Paella, contained 2 prawns and chicken and a mussel shell. The chicken in the paella shared the same parentage as the Caesar salad both had long since deceased! Very disapointing

Had pizzas here for lunch, all were freshly made and delicious. I had a glass of the house special cloudy cider and that was equally as good.

Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
