Good concept. Horrible movie.

2. Big (1988)

PG | 104 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

73 Metascore

After wishing to be made big, a teenage boy wakes the next morning to find himself mysteriously in the body of an adult.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia, John Heard

Votes: 234,602 | Gross: $114.97M

Refreshingly sweet and undeniably funny, Big is a showcase for Tom Hanks, who dives into his role and infuses it with charm and surprising poignancy.

3. Awakenings (1990)

PG-13 | 121 min | Biography, Drama

74 Metascore

The victims of an encephalitis epidemic many years ago have been catatonic ever since, but now a new drug offers the prospect of reviving them.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Julie Kavner, Ruth Nelson

Votes: 153,682 | Gross: $52.10M

Williams gives his best "straight" performance, shorn of all his marvelous manic vaudeville. The man he plays here is not a performer, which he was even in Dead Poets Society, but simply a man.

4. A League of Their Own (1992)

PG | 128 min | Comedy, Drama, Sport

69 Metascore

Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amid their own growing rivalry.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna

Votes: 117,924 | Gross: $107.53M

Sentimental and light, but still thoroughly charming, A League of Their Own is buoyed by solid performances from a wonderful cast.

5. Renaissance Man (1994)

44 Metascore

A failed businessman is hired by the army to teach a group of underachieving recruits in order to help them pass basic training.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Danny DeVito, Gregory Hines, James Remar, Ed Begley Jr.

Votes: 18,722 | Gross: $24.33M

Having taken basic training at Ft Jackson, SC this film had a lot of memories for me. Plus Penny Marshall autographed my "League of Their Own" poster for me after the premiere.

6. The Preacher's Wife (1996)

PG | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

An angel comes to Earth to help a preacher save his church and his family.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, Gregory Hines

Votes: 13,193 | Gross: $48.10M

The Preacher's Wife qualifies as old-fashioned Hollywood movie making at its corniest and most saccharine. But the mostly African American cast puts an engaging spin on the chestnut, and it works beautifully.

7. Riding in Cars with Boys (2001)

PG-13 | 132 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

43 Metascore

A single mother, with dreams of becoming a writer, has a son at the age of 15 in 1965, and goes through a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father.

Director: Penny Marshall | Stars: Drew Barrymore, Steve Zahn, Adam Garcia, Brittany Murphy

Votes: 30,173 | Gross: $30.17M

Riding in Cars With Boys suffers from mixing grit and pathos with cuteness and comedy. Ironically, many critics found Zahn's character more compelling and three-dimensional than Barrymore's.
