Four Stages of Animation[]

  • "In September of 1992, Audiences at the Seattle Film Festival were given a rare glimpse into the art of animated filmmaking. At a special screening, They viewed an unfinished version of Monica's Gang in The World of Romeo & Juliet, known the animation as a "workprint". This partially completed film contained all the basic elements of sight and sound, That would eventually come together in the finished picture. The workprint offers a fascinating insight, into the four major steps in producing an animated movie. To help you appreciate exactly what these steps involve, We'll show you a single scene from the film as it progresses through each stage."
  • "After the script for the film is written, The entire movie is broken down into major and minor scenes, Each scene is then visualized or storyboarded, much like a panels in a comic book. The storyboard illustrations are then arranged in sequence, this let's the director and animators see how the film's characters, actions and settings related to and play against each other."
  • "In the second step, The animators create rough animation of the various scenes. This preliminary work gives them a better sense of character proportion, weight and movement all critical in determining, how these animated individuals will appear and act."
  • "The third step called "clean-up" refines the rough animation until there's just one clean continuous line for each character. Shadows are also added now providing the illusion of mass and dimension."
