Maine Gov. Paul LePage sparked controversy on Thursday following comments he made about a state Democratic senator. Regarding State Sen.Troy Jackson, of Allagash, LePage said, "Sen. Jackson claims to be for the people but he's the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline."Click here to watch the uncut comments from LePage.WMUR's sister station, WMTW, was the only Portland media outlet to capture the governor’s remarks.After dropping the verbal bombshell, LePage tried to end the interview but then stepped back in front of the camera and said, "That comment is not politically correct but we've got to understand who this man is. This man is a bad person. He doesn't only have no brains, he has a black heart."Earlier on Thursday, LePage had attended a rally against new taxes in the State House.At the rally, the governor promised to veto the budget that lawmakers passed late last week.He also asked lawmakers to agree to a 60-day contingency plan to help avoid a state government shutdown while legislators work on a new budget plan.Jackson gave the Democratic response to LePage’s remarks and accused the governor of being the one who has been unwilling to meet with lawmakers and come up with a compromise plan.Following the governor’s remarks, Jackson told WMTW, "Stamping his feet and making these type of comments doesn't do anything to help the people of the State of Maine and I'm 44 years old and I understand that that's not the way that you do things if you're going to be an elected official."When WMTW’s Paul Merrill told LePage that his Vaseline comment is going to offend people, the governor responded, "Good! It ought to because I've been taking it for two years."
