Newfoundland Mi’kmaq Family History & Genealogy

The internet is a good place to find out about your family history. Lots and lots of genealogy websites and resources. Unfortunately, it ain’t as easy as the tv ads for Ancestry look. Often those ads with cheerful people clicking on a leaf and finding some fascinating bit of information about their great-granddaddy come on as I’m struggling to figure out whether this Peter is son of this Paul or that Paul. It’s all I can do to not throw a shoe at the television.

james-cook-map-nfld-1775 - genealogy websites

There is a lot of information on the big genealogy websites like ancestry.ca and genealogy.com. And there are lots of other sites with information where you don’t have to pay a membership fee. Some have vital statistics on them – birth and death records, census information etc. Others are the product of family researchers. Below are sites related to Newfoundland Mi’kmaq families that I have found useful.

Please note: If I don’t reply to your query, it is because I have no information. I don’t want to add to the comments with ‘I don’t know’. If you can help answer someone’s question, please post!

For non-internet materials:

The Newfoundland Emporium on Broadway in Corner Brook is a great resource. You can find all kinds of treasures, including hard to find Newfoundland books. See my Newfoundland Mi’kmaq Books for more sources.

A word of warning:

Do not rely totally on any one source as the gospel. Primary records have enough inconsistencies of fact and, with websites, you have the added possibility of error of transcription. Dates get typed in wrong, names get misspelled. There’s lots of room for error. Plus some information is simply inaccurate or conflicts with other sources. So with primary documents as well as genealogy websites, be judicious, check and double-check.

There is a lot of material in the main site, but for $10 a year, you get to go in the ‘Members Only’ section. There you find many of the invaluable papers on Newfoundland family history written by Allan Stride among other materials.

NL GenWeb and Newfoundland Grand Banks are also great resources for vital statistics data. Also Find A Grave is great for dates, family connections and sometimes includes obits, photos and other information.

Also see Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Register for full access to their materials. The society has a quarterly journal The Newfoundland Ancestor.

A wonderful source for information on Burgeo history and families is the 1925 Diary of Burgeo by Joseph Small. Also valuable for those interested in south coast families is Dr. William Litchman’s Every-Name Index of the 1921 census for Burgeo and LaPoile, available in Kindle format at Amazon. Don’t overlook an easy place to start your search. For information on surnames, as well as all things Newfoundland, look it up in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English.

Navigation

Some genealogy websites are easier than others to navigate around. I’ve linked to home pages whenever possible so that you can see what’s there. I’ve used all these sites, so know it is possible to get around if there’s more information there. If there’s so much information that you don’t know how to find who you’re looking for, try searching with ‘control’ and ‘f’ keys on PCs or ‘command’ and ‘f’ on Macs and type the name or place in the little search box. At least within the ‘page’, that will find them.

These links are valid as of this publishing date. (Checked & updated June 2023.) They may change or be removed in future. They’re not my sites so I apologize in advance if problems develop with them.

  1. Hi Dorothy,

I’m looking to see if you have any information on Ann Warrick and William Breen?

    1. I should add. William Breen was born in 1826 in Fogo, he died in Coachman’s Cove Sept 10 1905. His father was Sylvester Breen from Old Ross, Wexford, Ireland. William Breen married Ann Warrick in Tilting, Fogo Island on Nov 30 1854. From what I know the church burnt and we can’t seem to find the marriage certificate. I’ve searched online but haven’t found anything. I see it might be located at The Rooms. I have no information on Ann Warrick but from what I’ve heard she might’ve been Mi’kmaq. Just looking to find out more info on her.

  2. Hello! I am researching my family– the Beatons of Norris Arm. My grandmother’s name was Ellen Mary Beaton, my great-grandfather’s name was William Beaton, his father’s name was (I am fairly certain) William H Beaton, and his father’s name was Alfred Beaton of Sandy Point. Members of the Beaton family ended up in Badger where my Dad was born. DNA testing recently showed that my family has indigenous ancestry. This was never known or spoken of in my branch of the family as far as I know. I recently read Frank Speck’s 1922 book about the Mi’kmaq and Beothuck people where he references speaking to a William Beaton of Badger Brook who had “Micmac, Montagnais” ancestry. I’m fairly certain that this is the William Beaton I am related to… I just can’t put all the pieces together based on dates and times.

Alfred Beaton, who is my many times great grandfather was supposed to have been married to Mary Anne Porter. I did notice that William H Beaton, his son, was supposed to have been born before the recorded marriage to Mary Anne Porter. I know members of the Beaton family were very closely tied with members of the Paul family through marriage and friendship.

Can you help me in any way untangle this?

  3. Hi Dorothy,
I am so happy I found your site! I’ve recently started looking into my fathers side of the family and it seems that information stops (for me on the mainland) within a few generations. I am wondering if you have came across any information regarding Jean/John Prosper Compagnon’s first wife. I believe she was either Mary Elizabeth or Elizabeth Mary Blanchard. I have found conflicting information regarding Mi’kmaq ancestry, specifically relating to a William Prosper Compagnon (who would be my Great x3 Uncle and his ties to MillBrook). If you could shed any light on this it would be appreciated!

    1. Hi Ashleigh, I’m happy you found this as well. However, I can’t be of much help. There does seem to be little known for sure about Jean Companion’s first wife. I have her as born 1799 and died about 1848 but I’m not sure. A good explanation of the uncertainty is in the sources and notes for Elizabeth (James) Compagnon on WikiTree. You’ve likely seen it, but just in case. Maybe readers can help out.

  4. Hello Dorothy-

I am and have been researching my great grandmother, Nellie Webber- her father and mother were William Webb/Webber and Louisa Wells. Louisa was born in Harbor Grace, Newfoundland in 1866 and William was born around 1862-1867 in Harbor Grace as well. I have come to a roadblock with William. It seems I have more info on Louisa as her parents were William Wells, and Ann Theresa Simmons, both from Mosquito Newfoundland (1820s) It shows a fair amount of Indigenous blood in my Uncles DNA, so I am trying to find the connection. Looking forward to any info you might have

    1. Hi Autumn, I have Charles Webber and Catherine Cake as parents of a William Webber born 09 Oct 1860. I have no more info on William so don’t know if he’s the one you’re looking for. But in case, Catherine Cake was d/o William Cake, born 1781 in Dorset England, and his 2nd wife Mary Barnes, b 1781 in Trinity d 1861 in Harbour Grace. Their other children were Ann, Joseph, William, David, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Patience, Sarah and Thomas – some of whom I have place of birth as Mosquito (aka Bristol’s Hope).

My info came from Ancestry trees, so I can’t vouch for accuracy. There is a marriage record for Catherine and Charles Webber on Nfld Grand Banks in Church of England records. The date was 09 Dec 1859 in Hr Grace. Catherine’s place of residence was Mosquito and Charles’ was Hr Grace.

There is a Hayward Webber, born 1900 s/o William Webb and Louisa Wells, on MyHeritage. No more info is shown publicly, so I don’t know what info on his parents might be available if you are signed in.

      1. Thank you Dorothy for sharing this information! I was able to find a lot more information on MyHeritage (thank you for that reminder of the site). I totally forgot I had an account on there. Charles is not a direct descendent of mine, but I was able to locate William’s father, and several others in his line. It seems these families had been on Newfoundland since the early 1700s if not earlier. It’s been a struggle trying to find my Uncles Indigenous line, but it definitely comes from Nellie Webber’s side as my Uncles grandfather was 100% Albanian from the Balkan regions. Nellie (my ggma) would have been at least a 25-30% Indigenous. Just trying to figure out which parent of Nellie’s it was! Again- thank you!

  5. HELLO Dorothy
My Name is Jason Bennett. My Grand Father is Flatts Bay NFLD, Stephenville area He was born in March 9 1920. His Step father name was Joseph Leonard Benoit born OCTOBER 13. 1900. This is the Information I am looking for. I am having trouble tracking down my Great Grand Mother information her Name was Mary Alice Bourgeois April 15 1899 she was a daughter of a Chef ( Eugene Bourgeois, Mother Francis Gallant). She got pregnant by a man with the last name “Young” and was forced not to see this man and to Marry Joseph Benoit from the information I have. Looking for any information about her and Mr. Young if possible

  6. Hi Dorothy,

Over the course of the last two years I have been desperately trying to research my families history and potential ties to the indigenous people of both Lunenberg, Dominion Point and Botwood.
I don’t have much information, my father’s last name is Toope, son of Winnie Violet Randell (of Botwood) and Ivan Toope (adopted). From what I have found is that my Nan’s mother (Flora Burt) might have had family that originated from Lunenberg NS but names start to be spelled differently.
    Any help is appreciated!

    1. If it’s that difficult to find an Indigenous ancestor, you should probably accept the fact that you don’t have any.
I’m First nations, Anishinabe from Kitigan Zibi. I knew my dad was an Algonquin man my whole life. The Indian Act had a huge impact on my family history. My skin is brown like my dad’s and his parents. I have a lived experience as an Indigenous woman, I’ve been impacted by intergenerational trauma.
If you were Indigenous it would be common knowledge. The Qalipu is a joke! The grifters on this page are unbelievable! Everyone trying to get a “card” should be ashamed of themselves. If your parents and grandparents never identified as Indigenous, guess what folks; you are just a regular white person

      1. I really agree with a lot of what you are saying here. I would argue the Qalipu are really a group like the metis, very distinct and very much a mix of Indigeous, French, and English. Not only genetically because women did not really cross the pond for a few hunderd years (they were literally not allowed, though I am sure some made it across). This leaves a bunch of men on an island, with a bunch of decendents somehow… The Governement of Canada even knows this, as it was a condition of confederation that Newfoundlanders would not be able to claim status because the whole island would likely qualify. I do not identify as Indigenous because my grandmother was shamed out of it after generations of being in hiding and mixing with English blood as much as possible in a limited outport community. I grew-up thinking everyone had mocs and parkas if they were Canadian. Newfoundland culture even relflects this history with the land. Newfoundlanders have become accustom to being the joke of all other Canadians, but they never have had to endure hardship like a real First Nation, or be subject to the inhuman Indian Act. So, in the grand scheme of things it really does make a difference and does not properly respect the fact that a real genocide happened for hundreds of years to the Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

      2. I am a member of Qalipu. And I agree it is a joke. Full of wanna bes and never bes. Designed to allow non-indigenoud people to get status as a way for the government to segrate families and assimilate those who are actually Mi’kmaq. And as you stated if one needs to go back hundreds of years to find an indian in the woodshed there was never one there.

  7. hello dorothy. I am a descendent of john payne and mary brooks. payne is my 5th great grandfather. down the line to my 2nd ggf john house. he married a woman named Mary patey (descent from pilgrim surname). I am trying to find info of pilgrim side for any native ancestry. please!

    1. Hi Sabra, I have Mary Patey b 1858 in Cape Norman, Northern Peninsula d Feb 1919 in Daniel’s Harbour, d/o Patrick Patey and Cornelia Louisa Pilgrim. Patrick was b Sep 1831 in Goose Cove, d Dec 1911 in River of Ponds, Northern Pen. I don’t know if it’s the Goose Cove on the Northern Pen or in Trinity Bay. My Heritage says TB, 1921 census for Pateys in St. Anthony suggests it was the one nearby on the Northern Pen. Patrick’s parents were Thomas Patey, b 1805 Goose Cove, and May or Mary Flynn, b 1809 in Goose Cove or 1800 in Waterford, Ireland. Cornelia Louisa Pilgrim was b Feb 1840 Carbonear, Conception Bay, died about 1921. She was d/o William M. Pilgrim, b 1814 Carbonear, and Dianna Hollett, b 1818 Carbonear. That’s all I have on them, hope it helps.

      1. ty dorothy. is there anywhere that shows that pilgrim is native

        1. Hi Sabra, to the best of my knowledge the name in NL came originally from England. But it is long-established in Northern Labrador. Also in the Northern Peninsula and eastern Newfoundland. So if you’re looking for indigenous connections, if not from Labrador, you’d need to look at each individual in your family tree.

  8. Hello!

My name is Melissa Renouf. I was hoping to piece together my family tree, but I can’t seem to get anywhere with it. I keep finding dead ends regarding the descendants of Peter Paul Benoit and his wives (1st wife: Elizabeth/Elisabeth Tourett; 2nd wife: Selena/Celina Tourett). He is my Great-grandfather’s (Wilfred Bennett/ Benoit) father, and I am trying to gather the names and dates of his siblings, if possible.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Melissa, go to Jacques St-Pierre link in list of sources on this page. On his geneanet page, type the name in the search box at top. Peter Paul’s parents, children and siblings are listed there.

  9. Hi Dorothy,
I am researching my husband’s Bennett/ Benoit family. He is a descendant of Boniface Benoit Jr (1778-1838) born in Nova Scotia and Madeleine Marie Manet and their son Olivier Benoit (1811). Do you have any information on Olivier or suggestions of websites where I can look?
    Thank you.

    Diana Rossi

    1. Hi Diana, I suggest starting with WikiTree. His family is on there, and the nice thing is there’s usually more information and sources at the bottom of the main entry for someone.

  10. Hi Dorothy do you know if the stevens from venison island an seal island Labrador area where related to the mic maw stevens in nfld?

  11. Hello all! Not sure if people still check this, but here’s to hoping.

My paternal great grandmother was Sarah Grandy (married Cluett). I’ve managed to finally piece together a somewhat cohesive family tree, and am desperately trying to reconnect with my relatives. My grandmother, Mary Alice Taylor, was born and raised in the Belleoram area.

I’ll be in Newfoundland for the first time in my life in November (2022). I’d love to be able to meet locals who may have stories of my family, or other pieces to this crazy and beautiful genealogical puzzle.

If anyone would like to connect, please email me at maemanderson@gmail.com

    Hope this reaches someone! 🙂
    Mae

  12. Hi Dorothy,

Do you have any info on Lynetta Pilgrim married to Kenneth Pilgrim. I’m trying to find her last name before she got married. I believe she may be of mikmaq descent. She is my great great grandmother. Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Pat, sorry, nothing. I found Kenneth’s obit – 1907-2009! Maybe someone reading can help out. Hope so.

    2. Regular from Paquet

  13. Hi there, I am searching for info on Mary Francis Webb’s parents, Ben Francois and Mary Young. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated! 🙂

    1. Hi Minal, Ben Francis died about 1895 probably in Codroy Valley. Mary Young was born in 1856 in Flat Bay. That’s all I have on them. Maybe readers can add more.

  14. Hi Dorothy,

I have been stumped on one of my ancestors for years and am hoping you will be able to help me find more information.

I am looking to find out more about a Henry Haskell born in 1816 in Lamaline, NL. Henry’s wife was named Elizabeth Day Hill (or Hill Day, it’s been disputed). Most often, these two get mixed up with another couple with the same name from New England which I do not think are the same couple. I am hoping to find out who Henry’s parents were, and hope to uncover when the Haskell’s landed on the Burin Peninsula and where they were from.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!!

    1. Hi Brody, I have Henry Haskell but not his parents. From Ancestry member trees, I have him born in 1830 in Lamaline, died Apr 1899 in Burin. I have his wife, Elizabeth Day Hill, as born in 1830 in Gloucester MA, died 1903 in Lamaline. Online I saw a lot of queries about his parents but nothing on who they might be. Maybe readers can help?

      1. Hey there Dorothy, it’s nice to make your aquatence! My name is A-A Wilcock my mom is B.A Stanton, her R.G Tulk.

Her mother is Jessica Daisy Tulk born 1903 [Wilton, Hatcher], She married George W Tulk and had 3 children. Her Mother is Elizabeth Ann Lundrigan [died 1903], father is Sam Hatcher remarried about a year after death of Nukumi Elli Jr.

If you need anything I can try my best, just reach out. Or if you would like to join me on my journey dont hesitate to reach out

  15. Hello Dorothy,

I am writing to ask if you have any information on my great-grandmother, Josephine Sharpe (nee Gillam) from Upper Island Cove, born in 1889, possibly? We believe that she was Mi’kmaq. She married Albert Sharpe and moved to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia where she died in 1934.

We are confident that there are many Mi’kmaq connections on our father’s side but have been unsuccessful in finding any document to support this. Are you able to suggest a genealogist in NL who might be able to assist with our research?

    Thank you!
    Megan

    1. Hi Megan, I have Josephine Gillam as daughter of William Gillam and Susan Short. Google has her born 1898 in Grand Bay (Port aux Basques area) and died 1934 in Glace Bay. William Gillam was born 1868. Susan Short born 1874 to William Short (b 1841 Cape Ray d 1913, s/o John Short and Mary) and Henrietta Anna Rita Dowling (b 1851 Burgeo-LaPoile d 1938, d/o Arthur Dowling and Esther Harvey). So, if these are the correct people, you’ll find more possibly on Harvey genealogy sites. That’s all I can find, and I have nothing on William Gillam or Albert Sharpe. Hope this helps.

      1. Thank you so
Much!! Are you able to suggest a genealogist who might be able to dig through some records for us in NL? My sisters and I are spread out through Ontario and Alberta and finding it difficult to locate any solid documents to support our ancestry.

        1. Sorry, Megan, I can’t think of anyone. Maybe someone reading this can suggest some names?

      2. Hi Dorothy! I have been doing research on the Harveys and have found that many from that tree identified as Mikmaq on the 1921 census. I thought this might be of interest to some of your readers. Family names that I have researched include; Harvey, Billard, Short, Gillam.
        Cheers!
        Megan

  16. Hi! Dorothy

Would you check for me to see if the kennedy’s from carbonear and the kennedy’s from the bird cove area related and let me know i am in no hurry.

    1. Hi David, I found a Kennedy genealogy site that might be of help. Also googling Kennedys in my database, I came up with John Kennedy b 1867 Carbonear d May 1952 Winter House Brook, Bonne Bay. He married Margaret Dobbin. Geni has information on their parents, and a son Peter. I think they may also have sons Richard Kennedy, marr Irene Brake, and Stan Kennedy, marr Frances Pike.

  17. Hey Dorothy! Thank you for helping so many with their genealogy, I have found a lot of these comments very helpful in developing my own gaps in my family tree. I am looking for information on my Great-great grandmother, Agnes Osbourne 1885-1964 born in St. Barbe married to George Osbourne (Osmond) 1888-1953. Any information would be helpful! Thank you.

    1. Hi Erika, thank you, but sorry I have nothing on Agnes or George Osbourne. I found them on WikiTree, but nothing else on her. He is listed as born 9 Jun 1887 in Gooseberry Island, Bonavista, died 4 Nov 1953 in Traytown, Bonavista. He’s buried there in the Olivet UC Cem. He and Agnes are in the 1935 census in Gooseberry Island and 1945 census in Traytown. You already know that, I’m sure, but maybe it will help someone reading who might know more.

    2. Erika I live in Traytown, NL, my surname is also Osbourne – My father was born on Gooseberry Island, his father was Martin Osbourne – What information are you seekong?

  18. My great-great Grandmother is Anne Smith (nee Williams), daughter of Hannah (Anna) Williams (Nee Brown) and William Williams. Hannah Williams (Brown) parents are Joseph Brown and Novilee Deerchild. I can find names but no locations, births or deaths (or at least any confirmation of their existence…) Are you able to point me in the right direction?

    1. Hi Deborah, if you haven’t already, search through the comments on this page and throughout my website for Hannah’s name. Lots of people have commented on the family over the years. I found them too on the Family Search site – google Hannah Brown or Elizabeth Brown and they should show in your results.

  19. Looking for any information or a direction to find out more about my family. Louis John Conne River 1868-1957was my great grandfather. He was the son of Peter & Mary Ellen(Janes). CAn you hlep?

  20. Hi Dorothy, thank you for the work you put into helping people find out more about their heritage. I am looking for information on Sadie Organ of Newfoundland. She was my grandmother and I’m told she was quarter Miꞌkmaq. Thanks!

    1. Hi Zac, and thank you. Do you have any dates or places for your grandmother, and her birth or married surname?

      1. Hi Dorothy,

I’m sorry if I have entered through the wrong door. I could not figure out how to post a new question on Edmee Lejeune b abt 1624 d abt 1687 m abt 1646 to Francois Gauterot b abt 1613 d abt 1693 and I did not see any discussion below on her or her parents.

Do you or any readers out here know if her father was Pierre Lejeune from France b abt 1595 who married a Micmac Woman? If so, when and was she part of the Membertou family?

I am related to Edmee and truly hope she was metis.

  21. Hello Dorthy! I am looking for any info on Minnie Blanche Earl, her siblings or her parents Jospeh Earl and Sarah. Minnie was born in Leading Tickle on 23 Jan 1891. and would there be any websites that can help me research more about them other than ancestry or family search? thank you!

    1. Hi Dante, all I could find was a sister, Dora Earle, on Ancestry genealogy/records. She’s listed as born 29 Nov 1893, died 12 Mar 1916, both in Leading Tickles. Father is Joseph Cox Earle and mother Sarah Maria Haggett. There’s also matches for records of Minnie Blanche Earle but you have to belong to Ancestry to see them.

  22. Hello Dorothy,
    My email is cbwehr@telus.net.
I have been told that I am part Micmaq through my mother. Her name was Reta MacNeill. She was traumatized by things she would never talk about as a girl and I always wonder if she was afraid of being taken away from her family due to her appearance. She looked very Metis whereas other family members did not. I believe it came through early marriages which I can’t locate. Her grandmother MacNeill came from the Proude/Barry families. A barry had married a Richard and there are two separate histories on that. There is a long line of Richards who come from the Muise family Migmaq/french. I have also found Migmaq clues of a Barry marrying a LaJeune around the Burnt church area of N.S. and one of those families moved to Nfld and married into Migmaq families. I can find ony one girl and there must have been other children. I know that later generations were advised to hide their Migmaq background for various reasons and think this was the case. I very much want to find that link because my mother has passed away before she was willing to open up with that info.
    thank you. Cheryl

    1. Hi Cheryl, I can’t find any information on your mother. The families you mention are very large, as you know, but maybe with luck someone reading can help. If you haven’t already, you might check out the Muise and LeJeune sites listed above on this page.

  23. Glad I came across your site!

I’ve found my family linage back to Michel Hache-Gallant and was looking for information on the Mi’Kmaq connection within the tree/lineage. You’ve mentioned a few different sites, and times on comments on your site there are many connections, but I am having difficulty finding definitive evidence.

    1. Hi Steve, I can’t help with evidence. But maybe if you can contact someone at any of the websites about the family, they would know more. Or PEI museums might be able to help? Thanks for writing, and good luck!

  24. Hi Ms. Stewart,
I was looking at this page on your site – https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/c/c/Trudi-Deborah-Mccartney/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0037.html and I was trying to access the link to Mary Brooks family tree and it just comes up as #blocked? I noticed that her daughter, Keturah Payne, would be my great great great great grandmother so I was interested in seeing the tree that is posted there. Is there somewhere I have to join to be able to see it?
    Thank you,
    Doris Cowley

    1. Hi Doris, you’re right about the trees. Everything I clicked on that said “Family Tree for” didn’t work. But clicking on individual names took me to each person’s individual page with info about their family. I went to the genealogy.com home page and didn’t see anything about joining up. I had wondered the same thing. I saw on Ms McCartney’s home page there’s a list of pdf family trees and none of those went anywhere either. Maybe they’re no longer posted? I don’t know. I found Keturah Payne through the Index of Individuals, but there’s no info on her. Keturah is on WikiTree with some info. Thanks for pointing this out.

      1. Thank you so much for looking into this. I’ll see what I can come up with by searching around in there as well.

        Cheers,
        Doris

      2. HI Dorothy, I am looking for information on my great grandmother Maggie Joe, I think she was born in 1887 in the Green Bay area in Nfld, I would like to find my family, thank you .

        1. Hi Annette, I have a Margaret, known as Maggie, Joe born Oct 1888 in Hall’s Bay. She married Thomas Saunders, also born Hall’s Bay Aug 1885, son of James Edward Saunders and Eunice Rowsell. Thomas and Maggie had children Winnie, John, Thomas, James Augustus and another son I don’t have a name for. I have her parents as John Denis Joe and Ellen McLean. Ellen was born abt 1830 in Bras d’Or Cape Breton, and Denny was born abt 1830 in Hall’s Bay. He was the son of Abraham Joe and Catherine. There’s a fair bit written about the Joes of Hall’s Bay. Look for the Earl of Dunraven 1881 “A Glimpse at Newfoundland”. I don’t know if it’s online. Might not be your Maggie, but she’s the only one I have that fits what you said.

        2. Hi Annette,

If it’s the Maggie Joe, Dorothy is referring to, I believe she would also be the sister of my great grandmother, Annie Joe (married John Barker) of Hall’s Bay…and I guess that makes us distant cousins 🙂

I’ve just started researching this myself. As far as I can tell, I can go from Peter Joe (1710) (NS) to Thomas Joe (1760)/Mary Francis Cabish (1735) (from NS to the Bay of Islands in NL) to Abraham Joe (1800)/Catherine Denny (1810) to John Denny Joe (1830)/Ellen Paul (1846) to Annie Joe (1875)/John Barker and Maggie Joe (1888) and Joseph Joe (1876) and I think 5 other children.

          https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LVNF-DKT/annie-joe-1875-1924

Thomas Joe (1760) also seems to be mentioned in this article https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Bay_of_Islands%2C_Newfoundland as one of the first settlers encountered in the Bay of Islands area.

Hopefully I’m not too far off on my details above. Maybe Dorothy has more background on this. However, if you find any more resources on the Joe’s, would love to see them.

I’ll have to look up the book Dorothy is suggesting. Thanks for that Dorothy!

  25. Hi,

I have been looking for information regarding my ggg grandmother Rachel Stuckless who married John Langford. Specifically, it was believed that Rachel was MicMac/Aboriginee, do anyone have information to connect this?

    Any help is much appreciated.

  26. My ggMother was Dinah Francis, who I believe was Micmac, at least in part. She had an illegitimate child (Howard Francis) in 1910 at Louisburg, NS and appears to have a link in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. I have looked through the standard genealogy search sites, but have come up with nothing on her other than the above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  27. Hello Dorothy,

Thank you so much for this wonderful resource! I’ve been looking for information on who appears to be my third great grandmother, Mary Ellen Miller. Born 1823 • port royal, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
DEATH 5 MAR 1903 • Point Verde, Newfoundland, Canada.

Other documentation I have says she is Mi’kmaq ancestry but am trying to find out how. If you, or anyone else, could assist me I would greatly appreciate it!
    Stay happy and healthy!
    Lynn

    1. I have info on people born in Port Royal, not sure I have anything that may help you but would be willing to check and see. if you want to e-mail me. I live in Dunville.

      1. Hello Harold; I am from Mussel harbour arm . I trace my ancestory to Issac hann who lived there about 1820 he had a son robert. are you aware of them Thanks Gene

  28. Hi any info on mangroves family from st.Lewis Labrador? I seen somewhere there grandmother or great grandmother was a mi kmaq ?

    1. Hi Nick, you’ve probably seen this but I found on WikiTree a Charles Mangrove, b abt 1830 son of Edward, married to Martha Young, born Labrador. Nothing more on her. They had a daughter Sarah (1880 Fox Hr to 1904 Halifax), married William Lynch. They also had sons James, Charles and George, according to C of E baptism records on Nfld Grand Banks.

  29. Hi Dorothy

I just asked if you may be able to find out if my grandfather James Mason(deceased) was Mi’kmaq but then I remembered that he went by Alan. I’m not actually sure whether his birth name is Alan or James but he did have a twin brother named either Gord or Roy.  Sylvia Kitchen has a sister Lorraine.

    Thank you again 🙂

    1. Hi Rebecca, sorry but I have nothing on them. Approximate dates? Maybe readers will be able to help.

  30. Good day Dorothy

I was hoping you might be able to help me discover whether my grandfather James Mason(twin brother of Gord Mason) or grandmother born Sylvia Kitchen are Mi’kmaq? They were from Newfoundland.

    Thank you for your time!

  31. Hello,

I am searching for information on my great-great grandmother. She was from the area around Port-au-Port, NL, and was allegedly Mi’kmaq. Her surname was Benoit, and she birthed my great-grandmother, who was Margeret Mary Murphy (née Benoit) b. April 1914 – June 1980, and lived with her adoptive parents on Bell Island. I’ve been told that her biological mother lived to be very old, and was living around St. John’s when she died.

  32. Hello again! after some more research, I have little to no evidence that Emily Marshall is linked to my family. However, I do know that my great-great-grandmother, Minnie Earle, is definitely linked. (in theory, she would be Emily’s daughter.) She was born on July 21, 1897, and died on May 15 1917 giving birth to her first and only child Minnie Holloway. I cannot find any documents that give her parents names for certain, and that is the key to finding out lots of other details. she was born in Carbonear and died in Lethbridge. her daughter was born in Lethbridge and later moved to glace bay.

  33. Hello, do you have any information on a David Wayne Baggs?

    1. Hi Heidi, I don’t but googling him I found someone of that name on Facebook. If he’s not the one you’re looking for, any other information – parents, place of birth etc. – might help locate him.

  34. where Shelmuck Inuit in Labrador?

  35. Any info on shelmuck family in Labrador?

  36. Hi Dorothy,

Do you have any info on a Mary Ann Mercer who married Abraham Boone? They had John Simon Boone born in 1882 in Port De Graves NFLD. I am told that Mary’s parents were named John and Eliza, but that could be wrong. Any info on the Boones and Mercers would be amazing. My DNA test turned up more Indigenous roots than I expected, and I’m trying to trace who in my family has it 🙂 Thanks Dorothy!

    1. I have an Eliza Mercer born May 1866, died Apr 1920. Eliza born in Bay Robert’s Newfoundland.

Married Azariah Dawe. Eliza Mercer’s parents being Charles J Mercer and Patience Kearley.

      Dave

    2. Hi Courtney!

My great-great-grandmother was Jane Mercer and she had a sister named Mary-Ann, born around 1860? If it’s the same Mary Ann Mercer, her parents were Jonathan and Katherine Mercer.

  37. Hi! I am looking for my possibly Mi’kmaq ancestors that lived in Carbonear Newfoundland from around the 1850’s-The early 1900s. Her name was Emily ann marshall, and she was born in Carbonear, 12 Aug 1872. I can not find her death date but I can find her marriage record and birth of her child record. I am looking for any website I can to look for her parents, or for any record saying if she belonged to any band or tribe. Thank you!

    1. Hi Dante, I have no information on Emily Ann Marshall. What I found googling her probably you already have. But in case it helps others who might know more, her parents were Ambrose and Margaret Marshall. She had a sister Alice born 1874. Emily Ann married William Earle Jan 27 1896 in Carbonear (C of E). In the 1921 census for Carbonear, William and Emily Earle are listed with daughters Margaret (b abt 1899) and Alice (b abt 1900). It gives Emily’s place of birth as Spear Hr Labrador, and Carbonear for the others.

      1. thank you!

  38. Looking for info George Organ 1775 Newfoundland

  39. Looking for parents sister or brother of Elizabeth Organ born Aaron Cove nf 1784-1853…

  40. Hi again Dorothy

I wrote to you three months ago about my Hall/Young line. You had said that the parents of my 3xGreat Grandfather James Young (wife was Elizabeth Gallop) were Francois LeJeune and Marthe Marguerite LeJeune. However the suggested parents and the other family lines at ancestry.ca were listing his parents as John Young (b 1765) and Catherine Poole (b 1772).

I just recently received my DNA results from ancestry and it tested negative for any Mi’kmaq/Indigenous heritage. So I was wondering if it was possible there were two James Youngs living in the same vicinity at the same time; one English and one Mi’kmaq. Or if there could be another explanation.

    1. Hi Gordon, I googled them all again, and found both sets of parents named in different places. But not enough info to figure it out for sure. Yes, it’s quite likely there were two or more James Youngs in the same area at the same time. Maybe readers will be able to help?

      1. Hi Dorothy, I might be able to help shed some light into your readers Question. There were definitely 2 James Young’s in that same area with similar dates to make it extra confusing LOL. Ok so the first James Young (the readers ancestor) who was English&Irish married Elizabeth Gallop. James Young aka Lejeune who was French Acadian & mi’kmaq born to Francis Young aka Lejeune and Margret Briand on St Pierre and Miquelon around 1810 he went on to marry Anna or Ann Long and had my 2nd maternal Great Grandmother Johanna Young in 1847 who married Henri Bennett aka Benoit aka Benwah from Little Bras d’or, Cape Breton Island. So there were definitely 2 or maybe even 3 James Young’s. It can be super confusing mainly because of the change in surnames of the french Acadian families who evaded capture during the Great Upheaval changed them to English variations of the French name for example the Lejeune’s became the Young’s the LeRoi’s became the Kings, Benoit became Bennett etc. And many of these French Acadian Families were of mixed blood or full on metis origin hence another reason to strive to sound and come off as more British or Irish. I hope that this was helpful.

        1. Audrey, do you have confirmation the James Young s/o Francois and Marguerite LeJeune as being the husband of Anna Long? Francois and Marguerite are my 3rd GGps and I have no marriage listed for their son James b. ca 1801. Would be great to add this to my files.

        2. Audrey. Thank you! I have been chasing down these 2 James Young’s for days, and it wasn’t adding up in my family tree! This was precisely the information we were looking for to solve this mystery!

My Great Grandmother was Johanna Young as well. My mother was the daughter of Teresa Marcella Bennoit (Mahnke) who was married to William Mahnke (Johann Herman Willy Mahnke). Teresa died in Skowhegan, Maine in 1963.

          Brian

      2. Hi Dorothy

        Hi Dorothy

I should have been checking your webpage more frequently as I seem to have garnered a lot of responses to the Young/Lejeune discussion. A year after I did my DNA test, I decided to try something and manually add Chrysostome Lejeune and Louise Maguerite Hache-Gallant as my 5X GG’s in Ancestry (Father to John Young and GG to James Young) just to see what would happen. I ended up getting 58 DNA matches at the time (It’s now at 66 matches). I then tried Joseph Charles Lejeune and Martine Le Roi and got 53 DNA matches. While Ancestry said I didn’t have any Indigenous, they did place me in the Acadian community.

Additionally I was DNA matched to the children of Joseph Doucet and Ann Surrette. However I am not 100% sure where they would be in my tree. Do you have any records orphaned Doucet/Mius children being adopted by Hall’s, Jennings’, Conner’s or Eisenhauer’s?

        1. Hi Gordon, very interesting! Thanks for letting us know. I can’t help out with Doucet/Muis adoptions, but maybe readers can?

    2. Gordon, James Young and Elizabeth Gallop Young, had a daughter Catherine, baptised in 1834 or 35 at Codroy River. Would you have any information on Catherine, that you could share with me.

    3. Hi Gordon, I think I may be able to shed some light on this question.
It can be super confusing mainly because of the change in surnames of the french Acadian families who evaded capture during the Great Upheaval changing their french last names to English variations for example the Lejeune’s became the Young’s the LeRoi’s became the Kings, Benoit became Bennett etc. And many of these French Acadian Families were of mixed blood or full on metis origin hence another reason to strive to sound and come off as more British or Irish. I hope this was helpful.

    4. Hi, I have those names in my family tree as well and wondering the same thing.

    5. There has been a great deal of confusion regarding the Young and Lejeune lines. There is an English Protestant Young line which is traceable to Fortune but no further back. It starts with John Young and Catherine Poole. yDNA testing of a descendant of theirs compared with a Young traceable to the Lejeunes shows no connection whatsoever. The story is complicated but the conversion to Catholicism of a branch of the English Youngs in Codroy. So religion can’t be used to sort these Young families out.

  41. Hi Dorothy,
I think you answered this previously in 2011, but I can’t find the post so here goes: do you have any idea on Angela Organ (married name Keeping) 1884-1951, born in Gaultois or Hermitage? Have found no record trail. Thanks!
    Kendra in Wpg

    1. Hi Kendra, here’s what I found in comments from 2015/10/06. (I’ve just checked and have no more on Angela since then.)

From Yvette: “…my Grandparents are Harold & May Keeping from Pushthrough, his parents: Andrew Keeping 1882 March 5, 1946 & Angela (Organ) Keeping June 21, 1884 November 12, 1951 (Family ~ William, James, Cecil, Lorenzo, Theadore, Chester)…” From me: “…Angela Organ, wife of Andrew Theodore Keeping, but can’t find her parents…”

  42. Who is the descendants of John Stevens? He was a Guide an a Mi’kmaq man?

    1. Hi Nicholas, I have Clara Stevens, b 1893 maybe in St George’s and wife of Peter Oliver, as daughter of John Stevens and Margaret Marche. I don’t have anything more on them.

    2. Hi Nicholas, i am a descendant of John Stevens, Halls Bay, if that is the same one that you are looking for..

      1. I’m looking for information on John Stevens from Halls Bay. My husband’s family are decendants of his sister Louisa Stevens. There is an old story of an Old John Stevens being abandon in a cove in White Bay. They said that he had gone mad and they took him by boat to a cove to leave him there. The story goes that they could hear his cries from a long ways.

    3. I’m descended from him. I believe his daughter was Louisa Stevens.

    4. Hi Nicholas,

Is the John Stevens you are refering to married to Sarah Furlong? It shows him being an “indian guide” in one of his daughters birth record. My friend is realted to his daugheter Ellen Stephens.

  43. Hi any info on George morris and drucella morris family tree in seal islands labrador?

    1. Hi Nick, I don’t know if these are the ones you are looking for, but I found this in the 1945 census for Shoal Hr – Cartwright, from Port Hope Simpson to Black Bear Bay, Labrador:

      MORRIS George Head M M 30 Labrador
      MORRIS Drucilla Wife F M 19 Labrador
      MORRIS Warran Son M S 4 Labrador
      MORRIS Aulton Son M S 1 Labrador
MORRIS Harriet Daughter F S 2 mons Labrador

      1. Yes Alton is my grabdfather. George morris mother was Mary Stevens an we never knowed who his father was? Just wondering if you have any info on Mary Stevens?

        1. My great grandmother was a Mary Ann Stevens, born in 1920, and married to a James W Morris. She has a brother named George. Their parents were Robert and Eliza Stevens.

  44. Hi, Dorthy, looking for info on Stephen Bennett born abt 1750 , England , married Hannah T, they had a daughter Mary Ann Bennett , not sure if correct name . He died in Harbour Breton.

    1. This is my family as well. Very hard to find sources and dates. Have you found out anything?

  45. Hello. I’m looking for information about my father’s side of the family. His mother was Melinda Powell Or Melinda Chaulk, née Parsons. She was Mi’kmaq, and lived in Carmanville, Dead Man’s Bay, and Musgrave Harbour. She died in the 1980s. One of my aunts, Maisie Powell (Now deceased), had status, which is how I found out my dad (Chesley Powell) is Mi’kmaq, too. I grew up hearing stories about Glooskap mixed in with the Mother Goose tales. I’m looking for leads on my genealogy. Thank you.

      1. I am still searching for information. My cousin Sandy McCarthy, son of Maisie Powell, is also Mi’kmaw.

        1. My great-grandmother was an Inuk named Phebe or Phoebe Powell, née Chaulk.

  46. Dorthy, you say, that the James Young, that married Elisabeth Gallop, was the son of Francois Lejeune and Marthe Marguerite Lejeune. Would you know, if they had a daughter named Catherine. Iam thinking she would have been baptised in Codroy, somewhere between 1832 and 1836.

    1. Hi Ron, I have a Catherine, born 1834 in Codroy, as d/o James Young and Elizabeth Gallop. James had a sister Charlotte Catherine, but her date of birth is 1795 in Cape Breton.

      1. Thank you Dorothy. That is the Catherine, born in 1834, that I am looking for. Now comes the hard part, trying to get some info on her, like did she marry, to whom and were there any children. There is info on Ancestry, saying that she married Meashac Mead, but how do you prove it.If I could prove, that is who she married, then I know the children. Again thank you.

        1. Hi again, I have Meshack Meade, s/o Meshacke Meade and Ann Baggs, married to a Catherine – no surname or dates. They had 6 kids born between 1854 and 1868 in Ramea and elsewhere on south coast. I don’t know where I got that info from though. Maybe someone reading will know more?

        2. Dorothy, yes I know there kids, Mary Ann was my ggrandmother. That info was given to me, from Dr. A W Jones, who did some searching on Meashac and Catherine.I cant give up, have to kept on diging, and hope for the best.Thanks.

      2. Can you tell me about the James Young who married Ann Long had a daughter Joanna Young Benoit ?
Was that James a Lejeune? And is Ann Long of Newfoundland or Nova Scotia?

        1. Hi Audrey, what I have on them comes from Ancestry member trees so I don’t know if it’s accurate. I have James LeJeune as born in Newfoundland, no dates and no parents. Wife as Johanna Long, 1808 to 1869, no places or parents. Their daughter Johanna Long LeJeune/Young born Feb 1847 Nfld, died 1943 in Little Bras d’Or, Cape Breton. Her husband as Henry John Bennett, born 1842 NB, died 1905. Marriage date 13 Apr 1864. Lark Szick’s Cape Breton materials (link on this page) might help with them. Hope so!

  47. Hi, Dorthy , I would like to know if there is anyone following the Northcott & Matthews , have there Status . Please can you let me know. Thanks.

    1. Sorry, Daphney, but I have no idea.

    2. which Matthews? My Mom was one. 🙂

  48. Hi Dorothy

My maternal great-grandmother was Elizabeth Hall; the great-granddaughter of James Hall. Do you have any more information on his Mi’kmaq ancestry?

    1. Hi Gordon, I’ve got quite a few Halls, both Elizabeth and James. Any more info, like connecting generations, dates, places?

      1. Hi Dorothy

Thank you for responding. My great-grandmother Elizabeth Hall was born in Jan 1846 in Grand River, Codroy Valley and died on May 24, 1930 in Codroy. I remember my aunts confirming the year she died was 1930 . Her daughter, my grandmother, was Mary Catherine Jennings (who married John Gillis). This was the information I already knew.

I then went on ancestry.ca to continue the tree where her father was listed as Joseph Hall (B. 1819, D 1893) in Codroy. After that it listed Paul Hall (B. 1792 in England and D. 1881 in Codroy) as Joseph’s father. Then finally it listed Capt. James Hall as Paul’s father. It was shortly after building the family tree that I came across your website and saw your link the descendants of James Hall and it matched my family tree.

There is a picture of my great-grandmother as a young woman in the house where my mother grew up in Codroy.
I always remember hearing comments from my cousins and other guests saying that she looked native, but my mother and aunts always denied that saying she was English.

        1. Hi Gordon, thanks, I’ve found them now. I have Elizabeth Hall as d/o Joseph Hall (1819 Cape Breton-1893 Codroy Nfld) and Mary Ann Young (1825 Fortune-1919 Codroy). Mary Ann was d/o James Young (b abt 1800 Fortune Nf) and Elizabeth Gallop (1799 Fortune-1870 Codroy). James Young was s/o François LeJeune (abt 1766-1839 Little Bras d’Or Cape Breton) and Marthe Marguerite LeJeune. Look at Lark Szick’s online genealogy and book as well as Jasen Benoit’s gen sites (links on this page) for more on them.

I have Joseph Hall’s father Paul as born 1792 in Main-à-Dieu in Cape Breton. His mother was Elizabeth Dillion (1796 Main-à-Dieu-1863 Codroy Valley). Paul’s father was John Hall (1770, d NS) and John’s parents were James Paul Hall (b abt 1740 Isle of Wight, d NS) and Esther De Young (b 1750 Ireland, d Cape Breton) That’s all from Ancestry member trees as well, so I don’t know if it’s correct. Anyway, hope this helps.

        2. Hi Gordon… I came across your post while researching the Hall’s myself. We also have always had many comments about looking native but I haven’t been able to track down an affirmative link. My MGG was Mary Catherine Jennings also but the MCJ in my tree married Alfred Edward Carew. I am also looking for information on Lady Ester DeYoung m. to Capt. Paul Hall…. does she come up in your tree as well?

  49. Hi Dorothy, I hope you’re well! I couldn’t find any other contact information so I figured a comment here would be the best way to reach you.

I’m currently in the process of doing research into my family’s Mi’kmaq ancestry (O’Neill/Gaudon/Benoit) and … seeking information specifically on Ellen Gaudon (married to Jack O’Neill) and her relation to the Benoit family. Anything related would be of great help. Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Olivia, I have Ellen Gaudon as daughter of Patrice Gaudon (b 13 May 1860 Port au Port) and Harriet Benoit (b abt 1867 Burgeo). Patrice was son of Edouard Gaurdon (b act 1816 France, d 14 May 1900 Stephenville) and Domitille LeBlanc (b 17 Jul 1825 Margaree Cape Breton, d 16 May 1921 Stephenville). Harriet was daughter of Francois Benoit (b Main Gut, Bay St George) and Ellen (nothing more on her).

You’ll find more about them in Kirk Butt’s book about Bay St George (try inter-library loan) and at Jasen Benoit’s genealogy websites. Links and info about both are above. I moved your comment to this page because it’s most likely to help you in getting more help from readers. Sorry, this is all I can give you but it should get you started.

  50. Hi, Dorothy, thank you for the info you gave me , appreciated, do you know if there’s any MiKmaq ancestry amongst my family listed please? The Matthews , Guy , , Northcott, & Baggs. Thanks.

    1. Hi Daphney and thanks. Sorry but I don’t know anything more about the family origins.

      1. Hi Dorothy, sorry if im hijacking the thread, i couldnt figure it out on mobile, lol

Im not very close with a lot of my fathers side, and its been very difficult to just Google them and start researching. My grandmothers maiden name was Edna LeJeune/Young, and she married my gpa Rev. John Young somewhere in NFLD (they were born between 1900-1912). I know next to nothing about their background or countries of origin, other than John being from Newfoundland (yah helpful i know lol) and Edna possibly coming from St Pierre Miquelon.

Apparently there was some discussion and investigation around their marriage because both of their fathers were named John Young and gma’s maiden name of LeJeune had been anglicized to Young, so there was some confusion as to whether or not they were siblings!

Edna died abo 1995, and Rev Young died about 1990. I know the Rev had several siblings, including a Viola/Violet that committed suicide, and a brother Haig Young of Youngs Funeral Homes in NL (they dont know me at all). I know Haig has/had a son who is a doctor but thats it.

Rev Young was a minister at St Albans Anglican Church in Whitney Pier, Sydney NS for most of his career. I heard rumours when i was a child that Rev Young’s childhood involved hardship and emotional turmoil (a nice way of saying abuse) after his fathers marriage to a wicked stepmother (he was a widower, this womans name may be Bertha, Brenda or Bernadette).

        My gparents had 5 children:
        -Kathleen Warren, nee Young
        -Janice Young (born in Twilingate)
        -John Young
-Stephen Francis Young (born in Sydney)
        -Andrew Young

If theres anything you can tell me about my grandparents, i would be very appreciative. I cant find much of anything with my sh#tty Google-Fu. Thank you

PS if any family sees this, hit me up bash_out@yahoo.com

    2. Thank you so much.

      1. Hi, I would like to know if anyone has info on John Matthews & Sarah Baggs being MiKmaq. I viewed aquite few post on Message board saying both John Matthews & Sarah Baggs are both MiKmaq, if anyone has any info stateing this , I would kindly request to have the info please. You can email or send by mail , will pay for expenses. Thank you

        1. Hi Daphney, I’m doing some family history research and I was wondering what information if any you were able to find on Sarah Baggs and John Matthews. I was given some information from a family member and they are looking to find more about Sarah and John. Thank you

    3. Hi, Dorothy , would you have anything on the MiKmaq hunters and trappers in Newfoundland.?

      1. Hi Daphney. Two books: Doug Jackson’s On the Country and Frank Speck’s Beothuk and Micmac. They’re both on my Nfld Mi’kmaq Books page, I think. The library should have them or be able to get them. Also Flat Bay’s Land Use and Occupancy Study.

    4. Hi Dorothy , would like to know if you have any info on Valentine , James, & John Northcotte, Gaultois, NL. Thank you.

      1. Hi Daphney, I have a family from that area with those names but their dates, from Ancestry trees, don’t make sense. Maybe readers can help.

  51. Hi Dorothy!

My mom passed away this past April, I was told at her funeral that my Grandfather’s Father was MI’KMAQ. My grandfathers name was Simon Daigle, he was born in Canada. I never knew I had Indian blood in me. I’m excited and curious to know more. How do I start? Unfortunately I don’t have anyone to ask.. my mom never mentioned anything about this to me.
    Thank you!!

    1. Hi Darlene, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m guessing you’re not in Canada? Daigle is a common name in Quebec and the Maritimes, so we need to narrow it down some more. If you have any other names, or places, that would help. Your grandfather Simon’s wife? Their kids’ names? You can search online databases like Ancestry and we can put it out here, and hope a name rings a bell with some readers. Thanks for writing, and let’s hope we can find something.

      1. Thank you Dorothy- I really miss her, everyday I think about her. This is so difficult… she was the one person who would always be there for me and now she’s gone. 🙁

She would really like the idea that I am interested in knowing more about my ancestry. I am still so surprised she never mentioned anything about being MI’KMAQ. When my Aunt told me I was shocked and excited all at the same time.

Thank you so much for replying! I am in the US… Massachusetts.

I found out today my Great Grandfathers name was Joseph Daigle who I guess was MI’KMAQ?

My grandfathers name was Simon Daigle and I found out he was born 5/11/12. My grandmothers name was Georgina and her maiden name was Hachey and her date of birth is 7/20/23. My mom was from Minto, Canada. Her name was Albertine, she has four sisters… Doris, Anne, Yvonne, and Clara.

My biggest goal is to find out if I am really part MI’KMAQ. 🙂 I always thought I was French Canadian.

Unfortunately our family is broken. I don’t really have any family. Only my Aunt and Uncle, my cousin Chris, Rick, and Dave. That’s pretty much it other than my husband and two kids.
My kids are adults and they think I’m being silly about the whole MI’KMAQ idea because it was never talked about by my mom.
Hoping to hear more if anyone knows anything. 🙂

        1. Hi Darlene, thanks for the info on your family. Even if your mom didn’t talk much about her family history, I bet she’d be glad that you’re looking into it. And don’t mind what your kids say! 😉 Ok, with a little bit of digging, here’s what I’ve found about your Acadian grandmother’s side. I haven’t found anything on your grandfather Simon Daigle. But your grandmother was easy. I found her obituary – what a beautiful woman!

Here’s a link to a Gallant family site – A Search for my Maritime Roots – that might be of interest. Also look at any or all of the Haché-Gallant sites on this page.

Your grandmother Georgina Marie Haché was born in Rogersville, New Brunswick. Her father François Haché was born in 1889 in Prince Edward Island and died in Worchester, Mass. He and Emma were married in NB, maybe Kent County. It is kind of between Shediac and Rogersville. I found Georgina’s mother as Emma Doiron dit Gould born 1900 in Cap Pelé, near Shediac. So you might find more about her under either Gould or Doiron.

François Haché was the son of Antoine Haché-Gallant and Marie Roselie Blaquiere. He was born in 1847 in Bathurst NB, died 1957 and is buried in the Rogersville Cemetery. Marie was born in Bloomfield in PEI. She died in 1924, also buried in Rogersville. That’s as far back as I’ve gone.

The Haché-Gallant family is found throughout the Maritimes as both Haché, and its variations, and Gallant. There is indigenous ancestry, likely Mi’kmaq, through the mother (name unknown) of Michel Haché (born about 1662). Sorry if this is confusing. Probably easiest to google him and read the many articles you’ll find about him and the family. Good luck!

        2. Hi, after finding the name Pennacook and Penacuik amongst my tree members and Massachusetts I found an article explaining how the Abenaki tribes of Pre- USA often ended up in Quebec and later known as French Canadians. Google Pennacook tribe.

  52. Hi Dorothy!
    I have an ancestry question!
First off I want to say thank you for doing this, I’ve been researching my family for years and have hit so many dead ends.

Do you have any info on Mary Ann Mercer (So many Mercers and Mary Anns haha!) who married Rueben Boon? They had a son named John Simon Boone. I’m looking into the Boone and Mercer family from Newfoundland, my mother is a Boone and I’m looking into which reserve or community the Mercers and Boones come from or are related to in Newfoundland. I was told that Rueben Boone is from Bay Roberts, and that Mary Ann was Innu or Mi’kmaq. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers
    Court

    1. Hi Courtney,

My great-grandmother was Jane Mercer and she had a sister named Mary Ann — born around 1860? We are trying to trace our Mikmaq roots as well and was wondering if you had found anything? Thanks!! Megan

  53. Hi Dorothy,
I am looking for any information for my Great Grandmother Clara Barnes, wife of George Pittman. Her parents was Drusilla Harris & Abel Barnes. I have been told she is of Mi’kmaq descent, but am trying to find any further information.
    Your help is appreciated!

    1. Hi Laura, I have Clara Barnes (b 13 Sep 1895 Trout River) as daughter of Abel Barnes (23 Feb 1848 Burnt Islands, Burgeo – 25 Nov 1923 Trout River) and Drucilla Harris (8 Jul 1872 Trout River – 5 Jun 1968 Trout River). Abel was son of William Barnes (abt 1821 Pensthorpe, Norfolk, England – 18 Feb 1882 Woody Point) and Sarah Maria Yates (1824 Great Snoring, Norfolk, England – 1895 Bonne Bay). Drucilla was daughter of George W Harris (1834 Harbour Grace – 1895 Trout River) and Jemima Coombs (31 Aug 1839 Carbonear – Jan 1892 Trout River). Jemima was daughter of Robert Coombs of Carbonear and Elizabeth Clarke, b 1806 in Crockers Cove Nf. That’s all I have on them. Hope it helps, or someone reading can add more!

  54. Hello Dorothy,

My mother was adopted, so I have very scant information, but I think I may Mi’kmaq on her side. My maternal grandparents were named Yvonne St. Jean and Leo Menard. Does either family name have links back?

  55. Hi Dorothy! I hope you can help me find my family! My Father was Albert King, born on Bell Islaned in 1942; His father was Edward (called Neddie) King, who was born in Marystown, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Edward married Elizabeth Hutchings, I believe, and moved to Bell Island to work in the mines. I cannot confirm anything past him! I believe his father to be Wilson King born in 1872 in Oderin, but can’t find his mother … Sarah J Smith married Wilson King, but I don’t believe she’s my grandmother! The dates don’t add up! I’m hoping you can give me some hope … I’ve been searching for a couple of years now, and I am having no luck at all ..
Maybe you could suggest to me any other place I may be able to find these reccords … I am hoping to come to Newfoundland to do research, just not sure when!
Thank you for any help you can give me!
    Sheri King

    1. Hi Sheri, sorry but I have no information on them and couldn’t find anything with a quick google. Bell Island might have a museum you could contact, or the provincial archives at The Rooms. And maybe someone reading will be able to help. Hope so! If I come across anything, I’ll let you know.

  56. Looking for I do James Matthews Burgeo NF 1813-1869 married Hannah Kendall 1818-1891

  57. My name is Diana Henry, I am researching Judith Hughes pelly who was married to Josiah Pelly. He came from Dorset England to Newfoundland. I would like to know when they were married, her death and I believe they moved to Newfoundland.
I am researching the Pelly/Pelley, as my grandmother was Eva
    Yvonne Pelley.

  58. Hi Dorothy…I was wondering if there was any info on my great grandmother Julia Musseau ( Young) being Mi’kmaq? She was born in St. George. Also wondering if my Great Grandfather Benjamin Musseau..Julia’s husband was also of native descent? I remember asking my father for years if he was Indian, he always said no…so strange. He looks Indian. Thank you Sherry

    1. Hi Sherry, I have no info on Julia’s parents, just that she was born maybe 1892 in St. George’s. Benjamin’s grandfather Musseau was from Quebec. I don’t have much on the female sides of his family. His mother was Mary Ann Randell or Rendell from Nfld, and his grandmother (married Musseau) was Hannah Parsons. But that’s all I have on them. Maybe someone reading will know more.

      1. Thank you very much

      2. Hi Dorothy,

Can you lookup Anne Pike (1750-1833). She married John James Pike. It says she may be Inuit.

        1. Hi Jenna, I don’t have anything more on her than what’s here in the comments. I’m not an Ancestry member so can’t see if there’s more in it. Maybe someone reading will know something? (The comments I mean are from Aug 3 2016 from Debra and me. Sorry, I thought yours was attached to them.)

        2. Hi Jenna and Dorothy,
I believe I am the Debra you are referring to. I did post some time ago about John and Unknown Ann. To date, I have found nothing supporting the fact that Anne was Aboriginal although many claim she is.
Perhaps one day we will find out if she is or isn’t.
          Thank you,
          Debra

  59. Looking for info on Sarah Ann Mercer 1815 Mortier Bay NF

  60. Hello Dorothy,
I am looking for information on the following lineage. I joined several geneology groups and can trace down to Elizabeth Ann Hodder marrying Henry Rodgers but then there is no listing of my grandfather James Henry Rogers.

    Jane Brinson
    Charlotte Jeddore Cox
    Jane Cox Hodder
Elizabeth Ann Rodgers (or Rogers) (gggrandmother)
    James Rogers (my grandfather)
    Henry Rogers (my father)

My father has since passed and I feel like I’m losing so much information.

    1. Hi April, I have a Henry Rogers, son of John Rogers (b 1880) and Elizabeth Neil. Their other children are Rita, Luke and Mary (b 1915 marr Russell Rose). I have no spouse or kids for Henry. I have a James Rodgers marr Loretta Vallis (b 1916) but nothing else on him. Another James Rodgers marr Dora Buffett, daughter of William Henry Buffett and Martha née Buffett. William’s dad Charles was born 1874. I have no other dates or info for them. So I don’t know if they connect to your Henry or James at all. But maybe someone reading can help out.

      1. Thanks, but this isn’t my family info. I know the lineage, was just looking for additional information on them. Much appreciated.

      2. Hi! I am of that family. Rita, Henry, Mary and Luke were siblings. My grandfather was Luke Rogers.

      3. Hi Dorthy Curious about the Vallis lineage, where can I find out more?

        1. Hi Jen, I can’t find any online family trees or anything for them, but there’s quite a lot of specific names. So if you want to post some names here, maybe I or someone reading can help out.

  63. Hello,

I’m looking for any information on the last names Toms and Purchase in Newfoundland. I cannot seem to find any information and I keep being brought to this particular site. If you have any information that would be so wonderful. Thank you for your consideration

    1. Hi Emily, I have people in my database with both of those last names. But I don’t have much else on them. If you have any first names and spouses, that might help. Googling them, all I came up with is Stone Pics – Nfld Cemeteries. Both Toms and Purchase are listed in the Most Common NF Names section (see left sidebar). Whether there’s more on them, I don’t know. Maybe worth navigating around it. Maybe too readers here will add something for you.

    2. Hi Emily
I just came across this website and read your post. My grandmother’s maiden name was Purchase. I don’t have much information yet but am searching . I believe she came from the UK and ended up in Harbour Grace, NL.
Not sure if this will help you but it could be a start.

  69. Hi just wondering what’s wrong with the Labrador family history link?

    1. Hi Nick, thanks. Don’t know what’s wrong, but I’ve gone to some other MUN sites lately that were down. Let’s hope it’s back up soon.

  70. Hi–well just spent an hour down the proverbial rabbit hole of roots,,,,been here before but thought I would post a query. I began my search of family history about 15 years ago. It led to a few interesting connections and one of course being indigenous.
Basically, like many I made the connection through one side of the family skanes/payne/brake/matthews, I believe but have recently heard that there may be another on the other side via skanes/house/payne/brooks…..
It has been mentioned that mary brooks, daughter of one john brooks may have been indigenous as well but it seems I am at a dead end. It gets hard t keep straight! Having paynes on both sides has been a bit of a mess a swell….anyhow great website…..

also ever heard anything on a fred anderson son of william anderson and sarah creamer from fortune area—my deadest end yet!

    great website

contact by email if ya like
    fred

    1. Hello Fred. I am a descendant of John Matthews, born abt 1822 in Petites, Newfoundland. He had two brothers, that we know of, Edward and Samuel. Spouse Elizabeth Ann Davidge. I’m wondering if you have any information that you could share? My email is ken.lisa@telus.net

  71. Hi, Wondering if anyone has any information or can add to the family of Peter John born 1846 and wife Helen born 1845, they had a daughter Margaret born about 1876-1880 in Bay De Espoir.
Unsure if they had other children. This family moved to Glenwood.
Daughter Margaret was not married, but she had a daughter Mary born 1910 in Glenwood.

    1. Hi Mike, I have Peter John and Mary Helen Hawe as having Margaret, Louis (b 1868 Conne River, d 1957 Botwood) and William (b 1883 Glace Bay NS, died 1948 Glenwood). Margaret’s daughter Mary Jo (b 1909 Grand Falls, d 1996 Appleton) married Gregory Wall. Louis married Mary Hawco and had 14 children. Billy had six children with Florence ‘Flora’ Francis (Gander Bay), two with Catherine Hollett (Trinity Bay) and one with Henrietta Francis (Flora’s cousin, also from Gander Bay). Hope this helps and maybe readers can add more.

      1. My grandmother mary ellen john (married walter helpard) father was louis john. Mary ellen lists mary hawco as her mother on her marriage certificate. But her mother’s obituary states she was mary whelan born in brigus (which seems strange). Mary ellen lived with her grandfather peter john until she was six (which seems strange). Any insight as to the name of my grandmother’s mother being listed as mary hawco (marriage cert) and mary whelan (obituary).

        1. Hi Sharon, I have her as Mary Hawco born 1883 in Brigus. But I have a note about her as Mary Whalen as well. Unfortunately, I didn’t explain my note very well to myself! So I don’t know where that came from. I have Mary Hawco’s mother as Jane Hawco, with no father named. Yes, it is strange. Maybe someone else can explain it for us.

        2. I have a marriage record for a Mary A. Hawco and David Whelan in Jan 1904 in Harbour Main, NL. Then a birth record for a Patrick Edward Whelan to Mary A. and David in Dec 1904.

    2. Look on Glenwood f/b page, there is a picture of Maggie there.

  72. Hi, I’m looking for information on the Paul family. I have a baptism certificate for Joseph Paul (1904) his parents are listed as William Paul and Emma Birt. The sponsors are listed as Abraham Paul and Margaret Paul. I have found that John Paul ( interviewed by American anthropologist Frank Speck) had siblings named Abraham and Margaret. Can you provide any information on this? I also believe that Joseph Paul is related to Nish Paul ( former vice chief of Spel’tk) whose father was Frank Paul, one of John Paul’s sons (1921 Census). Thank you so much for your information and time.

    1. Hi Danielle, I have Nish (Ignatius Thomas) Paul as son of Frank (Francis Walter) Paul, son of John Paul and Ann Elizabeth Bowns. John Paul’s other children were John Paul, born abt 1868, William John Paul, born 1899, and Margaret Paul (marr Patey) born 1908. I don’t have a Joseph or William that match those you’re looking for. With luck, a reader will be able to help?

      1. Thank you for the information. I’ll let you know more information once I connect some dots.

    2. Danielle

Any information would be appreciated – Sheila

      1. Hi,

I have an Elizabeth Neal married to a John Robert Rogers – both Elizabeth and John Robert look indigenous – in fact my great Uncle Henry (her eldest) knew how to carve igloos and make snowshoes, so I presume they were from further North originally. Elizabeth’s mother was Mary Rose. I wonder if somewhere along the way Noel may have become Neal.

My Aunt Laura married a Rose in N L I am up in age and trying to do genealogy for my grand children before my memory gets worse.

Doing my research, I came across lots of possibly ancestors of the Rose family. Do you have relatives in Rose Blanche? There was Elizabeth (Organ) born about 1837, one born 1813, and others in N.L. that were younger or older with different married names who were Organs or married Organs. Some from N L and some Ireland, etc. What area are you from? We may be related.

Robert was son of James Myles (b 1753 in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England, d in Terrenceville) and Mary Pardy (b 1785 in Lancashire, England, d Terrenceville. There’s a 100 gap between grandfather and Susan (Susanna). That is possible, or there’s a missing generation.

  82. Hi Dorothy,
Your website is really interesting. There is some mention of Mi’kmaq ancestry in our family but can’t find anything then I was surprised to find your section on Oderin. Wondering if you have heard of the name Mason on Oderin Island associated with Mi’kmaq heritage? Thanks!

    1. Hi Paula, and thank you. I have nothing that would help you, sorry. But if you want to post some family names here, maybe someone reading might know more. Googling just now, I found an interesting 2011 post about archeological investigation on Oderin Island, in case you haven’t seen it.

    2. My great aunt Mary Murphy was born Oderin 1858. She married Thomas Mason born 1843. I have not found a marriage certificate but her first child was born 1879. My line left Oderin in the 1880’s most moved to Mundy Pond area

  83. dorthy do you know about a book called
the families of deep water cove.

    1. Hi Holley, no I haven’t and Google couldn’t help. Any more details? Maybe someone else knows about it.

  84. Hi there! I have been searching for years for certain family members because it was passed down through the family that we may be of aboriginal descent, but I am having an extremely hard time finding any information on her, let alone anything on her ethnicity.
My great grandmother was Anna Norcott (Northcott?) born on March 17, 1887, married Emmanuel Edwards on May 30, 1906, and died January 5, 1978. Her parents were Fred Norcott, and Ellen Fitzgerald. That is literally where I run out of information.
I was told that they are either from Hare Bay, Bear Bay, or White Bay. Please help!

  85. Hi, my name is April. I am looking for info on Ellen or Elline Bailey. My great grandmother was Sarah Whiffen, her parents were Charles and Ellen or Elline in the earlier census records. Ive spoken to my aunt who lives in Rushoon and she said Ellen’s maiden name was Miller and she may have been married three times. My aunt said Sarah was Charles Bailey’s only daughter. In the census records I’ve seen it says they adopted an Annie Picco then in another it says Annie is their granddaughter. Ive also seen another daughter Margaret named and possibly a son George. Ive pretty much put most of the Whiffen side together very easily but cant find anything else on Ellen. Thank you for any info you may have or can help with.

  86. Hi Dorothy,

I am a descendant of Hannah Organ, born Oct. 31, 1856 in NL, d. Nov. 17, 1911 m. John MacIntosh and afterwards Patrick Curtis, but can not find any info on her parents. Does anyone know? Thank you!

  87. Hi Dorothy
Thanks to your generous information I have been able to trace a large portion of my ancestors but I have one question related to my Mi’kmaq ancestors – it seems there was a missionary set up in St. Pierre for Newfoundland Mi’kmaq around 1760 and they went there to have their kids baptized, get married, etc. My question – do you know of a link to that site that is in English? I am having problems getting the surnames for my Mi’kmaq ancestors and can’t find a site listing surnames. Any suggestions?

  88. hi dorthy
i am doing family history.do you have any history on upwards bonne bay. william henry upwards (upward)parents etc

    1. I have information on the Upwards of Bonne Bay (Silver Point). William Upwards born March 1863 in LaPoile married Sarah Raike daughter of Micheal and Sarah Organ. Sarah Organ is daughter of Sarah Baggs and John Matthews.

  89. Hello Dorothy, I am the gg grandaughter of Joseph Thomas Abbott b July 11 1889 (Wood’s Island) & Catherine Jane Howlett b January 7 1893 (Cow Head). Apparently both were g grandchildren of Sabastian Benoit & Theotiste Jesseau!
My question is, Joseph Thomas Abbott was the illegitimate son (her first born) of Jane Jennex and “John Abbott born about 1870 from Port au Port”. He was 5 when his mother left Woods Island (my g grandfather watched her leave on the boat) and he was raised by the Carter family (Thomas Cartier (possibly Carter)) Josephs godfather. I cannot find any information at all about his father “John Abbott from Port au port” but believe he may have been of Mi’kmaq decent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Tammy

    1. Hi Tammy, thanks, I had your gggrandparents in my database but no parents for them. Googling them, in the Corner Brook Townsite RC cemetery (Nfld Grand Banks site), Joseph Thomas Abbott’s birthdate on his headstone is 11 Jul 1892. Ancestry has 1889, as you do, and has his parents as William Abbott and Clara Gennex. No more info on either of them unfortunately.

For Catherine Jane Howlett, Ancestry lists her parents as William John Howlett, died Cow Head, and Mary Anne Benoit, born May 1861 in Cow Head. I haven’t found her parents. You probably know already know all this, but it’s all I could find for now.

      1. Hi Dorothy,

That information in Ancestry must be wrong. I have this record of baptism for Joseph Thomas Abbott, which displays his parents as John Abbott and Jane Jennex. I was hoping for info on John Abbott, thanks anyway 🙂

    2. Hello Dorothy,
My grandmother was Mabel Nora Sweet married to Wilson Strickland of Neil’s Harbour, but formerly from Isle de Mort and Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland I believe. My mother was Nora Ellen Strickland- she always said she had a grandmother or great grandmother named Elizabeth Balle who was

from somewhere near the south of France. Do you have any records of this?
      Thank you very much,
      Cynthia McKeen

      1. Hi Cynthia – all I could find googling was John Balle, died May 6 1918 in St. George’s age 77. He was born in LaPoile. That would make him born about 1841. That’s in Vital Records – Deaths 1915-18 in Nfld Grand Banks site. Maybe some connection to your Elizabeth, but I don’t know.

        1. Hi Dorothy – according to my info, Cynthia’s g-grand-parents are George Sweet & Isabelle Ann Porter on her “Sweet” side. On the Wilson Strickland side, it is Thomas Strickland (1835 – 1909) & Ellen Felton (1842 – 1921). Ellen’s maiden name is a floater; she’s been known to use Falkins and her father, Henry, went by the maiden name, Feltham . Therefore, her gg-grand-Parents on the Felton side, which was the name used on her marriage certificate, are Henry Feltham (dob. u\k) & Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cox (1801 – 1886). The only possibility left would have to be the gg-grand mother married to Thomas Strickland’s father … she could have been a “Balle”. By co-incidence, Thomas and Ellen were married in La Poile, NL. on Sept. 18, 1861.

  90. Looking for the parents of Ann Elizabeth Davis, born 1843 in Margaree, Cape Breton Canada. At some point she immigrated to Newfoundlandland and married in 1865 at Harbor Le Cou to James Jeans. She died 1917 in Cape Ray, Nfld

    1. Hi Norm, googling, I found them in the Cape Ray Cemetery – Annie Jeans d 1917 and James Jeans d 5 Jan 1923 age 82. That would have him born 1841. On an Ancestry message board, he is named as William James Jeans. Two sons are named, Charles Ephraim and Albert Mansiah. I have Charles Ephriam Jeans married to Emma Strickland, born 1881. You may know all this but I hope it will help find readers who may have more information.

      1. Ann Davis and James Jeans also had a daughter. Annie Elizabeth Jeans b. May 1866 d. June 4 1925. She married Medric Blanchard b. 1861, on Sep. 1, 1891. He is the son of Magloire Blanchard and Louise Ryan. Ann Davis would be my g-g-g-grandmother. My sources are mainly from church records and my Grandmother’s family bible.

        1. Hi Doreen. I am the grandson of John Edward Blanchard, son of Medric Blanchard. Do you have records of Medric’s birth? I had his mother as Claire Aucoin. Magloire Blanchard, his father was apparently married 5 times.

  91. Hi Dorothy, I have a question that you might be able to answer. The documentation collected by my family members when researching the Benoit line has been passed along to me and it includes a connection for which i cannot find any solid proof. The proposed relationship goes like this…
John Benoit (son of Sebastian b.1833 St. Georges – d. 1905 at Cow Head)
John Benoit married Mary Anne Hutchings at Cow Head around 1860.

John and Mary Anne have a son named John William who according to Hutchings and Buehler marries Ann Keziah Guinchard at Daniels Harbour about 1893.

The records that have been passed on to me indicate this same John William (or another William born of John and Mary Anne) marries Susannah Payne at Trout River in 1886. They are both living at Chimney Cove at the time. The record indicates William is the son of John Benoit.

I cant seem to find any information that this William (who married Susannah) is in fact the son of John and Mary Anne.

Can you, or anyone reading this blog, provide any insight?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Jason, I have the same info you have. Looking at the marriage records on NLGenWeb, I see that both John William and William are listed as “bachelor” so they appear to be different men. Both with fathers named John Benoit. Maybe a reader can help us out?

      1. Hi Dorothy,

I am looking for some information on John Stevenson. He was married to Sarah Stevenson. I believe he originally was from Quebec but came here to Newfoundland. He lived up on the goulds ridge road by cupids big pond. My understanding is he froze to death with his dog. My sons grandfather is related to him, we are trying to obtain information for my sons heritage project.

        1. Hi Robyn, oh that poor man and dog! Sorry that I know nothing about him. But maybe readers do. Any dates or other names that might help?

        2. Hi Dorothy. My understanding is that John Stevenson was born in 1881 and died around 1960-1961. Apparently he was in the history book when my children’s grandfather was going to school as well. He died and was buried here in Brigus, NL. I have scoured the internet with no clues minus a couple of people looking for the same information I am.

  92. Hello Dorothy,

Do you have any info on the Amedee Paulin, Brideau (Boudreau), or Xavier Stewarts.

    1. Hi Megan, sorry, I haven’t got anything on the names you give. There’s a link for a huge Boudreau family tree near the top of this post. Maybe readers can help with the other names you give.

    1. Hello, I have a Mary Ann Butler in my family tree. I’m searching for information for.

  94. Hello was wondering if you had any info on a Queenie( Baker) Crawford…married James Crawford?
    Cheers

    1. Hi Jamie, no I don’t but googling them I found an Ancestry message board from 2000 that might be of interest if your people are from Pictou. A poster says James Crawford’s middle name was Edward. Hope this helps.

      1. Thank you

  95. Hi Dorothy,

Do you have any information on Metis from the Mugford and Osbourne families in Nfld (Twillingate, Grand Falls, Grand Bank, Green Bay, Port Albert, White Bay, Herring Neck, Fogo and Indian Islands)?

Thank you very much for your time and sharing your valuable resources.

    1. Hi Seb, both are common names in Nfld. If you could give some names of people you’re looking for it might help me or readers narrow down the specific branches. Thanks for writing.

      1. In the family background, I have a Clara Pheobe Osbourne,
(1872 – 1953) from Margaree, NL. Her father is believed to be George Osbourne. She married Thomas Strickland (Isle-aux-Morts, NL). They moved away to Neils Harbour, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where they raised a large family. Looking for details, i.e., father and mother, dob’s, death info, siblings, etc.
        Paul.

        1. Hi Paul, I have Thomas Joshua Strickland as born 10 Jul 1868, son of Thomas Joshua Strickland (b 1842 Dead Is. NL), mother’s name unknown. Thomas Joshua Sr. was son of William Thomas Strickland (b 1801) and Frances Organ (b 1809). I have no information on Clara Osbourne, other than a son for her and Thomas named Herbert Strickland, b NS, who had a son Allister Strickland. Hope this helps.

        2. Hi Dorothy,
          Thomas Strickland b. 10 Jul 1868 and married to Phoebe Clara Osborne b. 20 Aug 1872 had several siblings, i.e., Harriet married to William Harvey;
          Keziah married to Thomas Billard;
          Wilson married to Mabel Nora Sweet;
John and others. I show both Harriet and Keziah as daughters to Thomas & Ellen Strickland (Little Bay, NL). Thomas (Sr.) died in Neil’s Harbour (06 Mar 1909), Victoria Co., in Cape Breton. He had been born on 28 Apr 1835 according to the census. His only wife as far as I know was Helen “Ellen” Falkins and she died several years later (02 Oct 1921) in Neil’s Harbour as well.
Thomas Joshua b.1842 also had a son who relocated to Victoria County, Cape Breton. His name was Silas Strickland b. 1879 and he was married to Isabella Whales. Some of his siblings were Frances, Clara and Théophilus. The info I have on Thomas (Sr.) and on Thomas Joshua shows they are two separate individuals married to different women. Thomas Joshua was younger slightly and he started his family a bit later as well with Susan Frances Le Fresne b. 1844. I hope this can clarify the two Strickland families from the same area. I am still interested to learn of Thomas (Sr.) parents and those of his wife, Ellen Falkins, alias, Fulcan or Fulcon.

        3. Also have family from Neil’s Harbour, Cape Breton! They were originally from Newfoundland but my deceased grandfather, Luke Rogers, Henry(his brother), Mamie (sister) Riti (sister) were raised there.

        4. Just a brief comment on Thomas Strickland Jr. and ensuing info on his parents in the next two submissions. I’ve recently come across an entry for the marriage of his parents in La Poile, Petites, NL by G.H. Hooper on 18 Sept 1861 as Thomas Stickland and Ellen Felton, (not Falkins) as previously reported. A further entry for the birth/baptism, 5 May 1876, of another son, Josiah, gives the mother’s name as Eleanor Felton (submitted by Rev. James Nurse, Methodist). None of the above has been verified yet against the original documents kept in Rose Blanche, NL. I’m not positive, but I do believe, the maiden name, Falkins was recorded on her tombstone in the cemetery in Neil’s Harbour (with no mention of Eleanor).

  96. Hi Dorothy:
I wonder if you have any information on my grandmother Nora Ryan born at Burgeo 1883 married to my grandfather John Companion from Woods Island norn 1868. Were either of those Indian ?
Do you have anything on Marie Brake who married my great grandfather Jean Prosper Compagnon ? Were they Indian ?

    1. Hi Gerald, I have Nora Ryan as born 18 Sep 1883 in Brigus, Conception Bay, daughter of John Ryan and Marie Wayne. That came from the Loder family tree (link on this page) and other Companion researchers who gave me material. Marie Brake was one of Jean Prosper Companion’s wives. She (1848-1925) was daughter of Joseph Matthews Brake and Mary. Joseph was son of Ralph Brake and Jane Matthews. Ralph was from England, but Jane was Mi’kmaq. You can read about them in Rev. M. F. Howley’s “Reminiscences of a Trip to the Western Shore of Nfld” 1882, and Bishop Feild’s 1850 “Journal of a Voyage of Visitation – 1849”.

    2. Thank you for the reply. Do U know if John Prosper Companion was born in St Malo, Quebec or Bacilly, France ?

      1. Hi Gerald, I don’t know. I’ve seen both France and New France for his place of birth, and there is a St. Malo in both. St Malo in France is not far from Bacilly. You may have already seen a query and document on geneanet about a Jean Prosper Compagnon in Bacilly, 1811.

      2. Nora Ryan is my great grandmother.
Jean prosper Companion was born in Avranches La Manche

        1. Hi Chrystine. Where is Avranches La Manche ?

    3. HELLO do you know IF I AM native STATUS MARY COLETTE HUMBER FROM Corner BROOK nfld

  98. Hello …I was wondering if had any information of Parents of
    James Matthews 1813–1869
Birth 1813 Death 1869 • Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

  99. Hi Dorothy,

I am really hoping that you can help with my query. My GGG granmother and grandfather were married in Brown’s Cove in 1870. However, I can’t find out, or narrow down who their parents were.
    His name was John Langford
    Her name was Rachel Stuckless.

They had a daughter Phoebe Langford who then married George Canning. Who then had Obediah Canning. (My GG)

It was always said that Rachel was of aboriginal descent. Do you have any information, or places you could point me to confirm this?

    Many thanks.

    1. Hi Shawn, sorry but I have nothing on them. I found them in the White Bay Anglican marriage records. In the NLGenWeb listing, he is named as “John Langford Jur” and I’m thinking ‘Jur’ might mean ‘Junior’, making his father also John Langford. I found Obediah Canning in the 1945 census online, born Jan 1901, with wife’s name Leah. Any readers able to help out?

      1. Hi, my name is Naaman Canning from Roddickton Nl. John and Rachel wre my Great great garnd parents. I think Rachel Stucklees came from Herring neck Norte Dame Bay. Can’t find any birth records for her, or John Langford. If you have and informatoin I would love to heve it. Email me @ naamancanning@hotmial.com

    2. This may or may not be of interest to you, but a good reference which may help lead you to other sources is the following:

      https://gw.geneanet.org/challenger1?lang=en&n=stuckless&oc=0&p=rachel

My grandfather was Obe Canning. The person who put the above together has done a remarkable job. Follow the links and you will see some surprises. Cheers.

  100. Hi Dorothy,

I was hoping you could help me with some information about some of my relatives from Burgeo. I was told that I have Mi’kmaq heritage from my mothers side of the family.
The names of those I am searching for are Elizabeth Benoit: Born Dec. 1866 in Burgeo NFLD. Married to Edward Anderson(Born: 1859) on Oct. 9 1887. Elizabeths parents were said to be Lawrence Benoit(1838–1921) and Fanny Strickland (1843–1921) Do they sound like names that would be familiar to Mi’kmaq heritage? Would you have any further information? Thanks so much in advance!

    1. Hi Vanessa, I’m not sure about this info, but I have Lawrence Benoit as born 1838 or 1848 in White Bear Bay, s/o Peter Benoit and Louise Frank Joe. I have his wife Frances Strickland as born about 1843 or 1825 in Bay de Loup, Burgeo, d/o George Strickland and Ann Melbourne. I got the information from other people and from Ancestry trees. The gaps in dates of birth for both of them make me wonder. So it’s something that might help you in your search, and maybe someone reading can help clarify for both of us.

      1. I have NO clue how to comment lol but can you PLEASE help me. I have founds tons of information on my family but NONE list they are Native, my Great great grandmother was Elsie Alice Wheeler (born Jesseau) She married Stephen Wheeler in 1890, they have a daughter named Mary Emily Wheeler Aug 2 and she married Walter Kendall in Aug of 1910… My grandfather is one of their sons, Hubert Kendall born April 1920 (?) and he passed Oct 1st 2008 wondering if you can PLEASE help me!

        1. Hi Charlotte, maybe you’ve already seen Jasen Benwah’s genealogy pages, but if not, go to http://www.benoitfirstnation.ca/mary_ann_sheppard.htm, to Generation 8. First person listed is Elsie Alice Elizabeth Jesseau. I too have her as d/o Alexander Jesseau (1850-1935) and Marie Anne Young (b 1851). Hope this helps.

        2. Yes I know that thank you, I am trying to find something that she is LISTED as Native (Mi’Kmaq) I have photos, etc. but NOTHING shows up on any census records in relation to her Mi Kmaq heratige

        3. You may not see this, but Mary and Walter also had a son Stephen, who is my great grandfather 🙂

        4. YES he is my dads grandfather… my grandfather was Hubert Kendall !!!!

        5. Greetings from BC fam. Walter was my great uncle, he had a brother named John who was my grandfather :o)

      2. Hi Vanessa, Lawrence Benoit and Fanny Strickland were my great grandparents. Lawrences’mother was Louisa Joe ( mik’maq) daughter of Frank Joe and Marie Angelique.
Lawrences’ father was Vincent Paul Benoit.

        1. Hi Lewis,

Laurence Benoit and Fanny Strickland are my 3rd great grandparents. My 2nd great grandfather is their son George Alfred Benoit (b.1879) and my great grandfather is George Alfred benoit (b.1910)

I’ve been working on my family tree and trying to find the connection between Laurence Benoit (married to Fanny Strickland in 1864), and Vincent Paul Benoit. Are you 100% sure they are father and son? I am having trouble with the dates in my tree and hoping you can help clear it up for me.

I have seen the marriage document of Laurence and Fanny. They married Sept 3 1864 in white bear bay– on the same day as Peter Benoit and Elizabeth Blackmore. Elizabeth was Fanny Strickland’s sister, I’m assuming Laurence and Peter were brother.

My confusion comes from Vincent Paul Benoit and Louisa Frank Joe.
Everything that I’m seeing indicates that Vincent Paul was born in 1837— (the same year as Laurence benoit)
And married to Louisa Frank joe on Sept 27, 1858… just 3 years before Laurence married Fanny Strickland.

Baptism records also show that some of Laurence and Fannys children were being baptized in 1864, the same year as Vincent Paul and Louisa’s children- Laurence, paul, frank, and George.

I’ve seen some family trees that list Laurence and Vincent paul as brothers—-but no documents to back that up—- and some that list them as father and son—- again no evidence to back that up either. And many others that have no trace of Laurence Benoit.

My dna on ancestry links me up with hundreds of people from this Benoit line, I’m just very curious about how my line actually fits in.

Any help would be appreciated !!

        1. Hi Shawn, I don’t have anything on the Rice or Langdon names you’re looking for. I found WikiTree pages on them, with explanations of uncertainties and sources. You’ve probably already seen it, but if not I hope it helps.

      3. Hi Shawn,. Nathaniel Gill-Hart was my Great Great Grandfather. Do you have documentation that states that Richard Charles Elson was his birth father? Nathaniel Gill Hart’s birth record only names Sophia Gill as his birth mother. He was adopted by Charles Hart and his wife. If you have more information on Nathaniel Gill I would greatly appreciate it!

        Roberta

      4. I believe this is my family tree..

    3. Hi dorthy,
Just wanted to say that I had a great aunt whose name was Elizabeth Benoit from burgeo born in 1866, but her parents were Vincent Paul Benoit and Louise frank joe.
Are you sure of her parents names ?
I too am trying to trace back my family from burgeo

      1. Hi Kath, no, I’m not sure. I have a number of children listed for Louise Frank Joe with Vincent Paul Benoit. No Elizabeth, but my list is likely incomplete.

  101. Hi Dorothy, I am looking for information on my Mi’kmaq heritage, my family are Currie’s, yet I am unable to find anything that would link them to Mi’kmaq ancestry yet on my great grandfathers birth certificate it clearly stated (micmac). His Name was George Currie of Rose Blanche. I found on the Newfoundland 1921 census his parents who are named William Sr. and Emma Currie, however I am not able to track back any further. Any assistance would be appreciated. I’m curious to know what Emma’s maiden name would of been, and also who William’s parents were, as maybe they would be the link, but again I do not know specifically, only hunches, any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much in advanced.

    1. Hi Kirby, I could find nothing on your Curries other than the 1921 census you mention. In case it helps anyone who might know more, here’s the census info:

Dates of birth – William Sr. 1859, wife Emma 1867, son James 1886, daughter Violet 1892 (listed as Hepditch, widow, with daughters Rita b 1912 and Annie b 1916), son George 1895, son Claude 1901 and Maxwell 1906. William Jr. is the next household, b 1889, wife Charlotte b 1894 and children Matthew b 1917 and Helen b 1920. In separate households are Thomas Currie b 1888 with wife Annie and Alexander Currie b 1890, wife Sarah. I don’t know if those two are also sons, but might be.

    2. Hello. I’m wondering if you are any relation to John Matthews, born 1822 in Petites, Newfoundland? He had, at least two brothers, Samuel and Edward and a son, with Elizabeth Davidge, named Thomas Francis Matthews. I’ve seen the Currie name appear in some of my other research. If you are, and are willing to share your information, could you please email me atken.lisa@telus.net. Thank you

    3. Hi Kirby,

It looks like we have a relative in common. William Sr. and Emma are my Great Great Grand parents and I too am searching for more information on them and seem to have hit a wall. I know this is a long shot since your comment was posted in 2017, but I am wondering if you have found more information on them since posting?

  102. Hi dorothy…merry Christmas. …looking for information Noah Pike 1864 married Jessie Rose belleoram
    Cheers

  103. Hi Dorothy – I’m looking to find out more info on Susannah Marche b.1840 (?) – 1880-81. She married James McFatridge March 22,1872. Had eight children. ( I have that history from detailed work that was completed on the McFatridge family, my family). Specifically, I would like to trace the Marche tree/origin. All I have is she was a MicMac French girl, possibly the daughter of Francis (or Francois) Marche.

    1. Hi .
Very intrest to see if you found an info on susanna McFatridge nee March

  104. Hi Dorothy,
Do you have any information on Lucy Evans (1831-1897) Newfoundland. Or her mother, Harriet Vardy (1831-1897) or her mother Elizabeth Jane Caisson, ?
    Thank you,
    Cathy

    1. Hi Cathy, women with these names are in my database but not connected in the way you give. Nor do the dates match. Could you clarify the dates – 1831-1897 is what you have for both Lucy and Harriet. I’m assuming the last names are their birth not married names?

      1. Hi, Harriet Vardy was born March 20, 1850 in Channel Port aux Basques and died August 20, 1910. , Her parents are John Vardy and Lucy Evans. She married Isadore Chaisson. Her mother Lucy Evans was born 1831 in pab and died Dec. 1897.
        Cathy

        1. Hi Cathy, thanks for clarifying the dates. Unfortunately, I can find nothing on Lucy Evans’ parents. I found her, though, in a couple of Ancestry trees as Lucy Mullins. One has her with two husbands, George Evans and John Vardy. But the dates for children don’t add up. I also found in a 1921 census district a household where the husband was listed as Hardy and the wife and kids as Vardy. I don’t know if the typo is in the original or transcription, but I thought it was worth bearing in mind.

  105. Hey Dorothy
William Benoit and Elizabeth Anderson burgeoning nf and Lawrence Benoit and Frances Strickland

    1. Hi Jamie – dates, even approximate, for them?

    2. William Benoit and Elizabeth Anderson were the children of Lawrence Benoit and Fanny Strickland.

      1. Lewis Standing, have you got other name of children for Louisa Joe. I am from that family line on my Greatgrandfather Stephen Joe.

  106. This is the info I have received regarding some of my family history. Being robbed of my culture and history I was wondering what clan they were and whatever else I may have missed.

Cyril’s(My Grandfather) mother was Annie White, daughter of Reuben LeBlanc (alias White) and Mary Delaney. Reuben was of Acadian descent, Mary was of Irish and Acadian descent (1/4 Acadian-Quebecois French, 3/4 Irish).

Alvina’s (My grandmother) mother was French, having been bored in St. Pierre and came with her father from there. Her stepmother was a Revollan from Mainland, Port au Port Peninsula. Alvina’s father, John Ambrose Lucas, was of primarily French descent but his grandmother Henriette LeJeune was of mixed Acadian and Mi’Kmaw descent, while his great-great-great grandmother Anne Hache (1751-1827) was 3/4 French and 1/4 Aboriginal (either “Esquimeux” which could mean Innu, Montagnis, Cree, or Huron or possibly even Mi’Kmaw) descent.

    1. Hi Kimberley, I have some of your names in my database but also have others of the same names. So I don’t want to speculate on which one is which. With Anne Hache, the “Esquimaux” part would likely refer to Mi’kmaq from PEI.

  107. Hello Dorothy, I am looking for information on a Peter Cloaney (Cluney) born 1875 in St. Pierre, listed as immigrating to NL in 1901, can’t find anything on his parents. I have found him in the 1911 and 1921 Census for the Bay St. George area, in 1911 married to Mary but by 1921 listed as widowed. My mother has the Mary I mentioned as Mary Joseph Lainey/Laisne. I can’t find ANY info for a Mary Lainey born in 1885, this is the year listed for Peter’s wife, Mary, in the census. Their daughter Ada is my great-grandmother. Please help.

    1. Hi Roxanne, I can find nothing on Peter Cloaney/Cluney or Mary Joseph Lainey/Laisne. I also looked for her as Laine, Laing and Lane (all variations I’ve seen of Laisne). I tried variations of Cloaney but no luck there either. Anybody else able to help?

    2. Roxanne I can help you, We are related, Mainland on The Port au Port Peninsula is where she lived.

    1. Hi Jamie, I have Frances and Tom Billard as children of William Billard (b abt 1819 Wreck Island d 1906) and Susanna or Mary Ann (surnames unknown). William was s/o Gabriel Billard (b 1784 St. Malo, France d 1863 Wreck Is. NL) and Miriam Durnford (b abt 1798 Francois NL d 1886 Grand Bruit NL). Miriam was d/o Samuel Durnford, b abt 1775 Poole, Dorset UK) and Anne surname unknown. Thomas Billard married Sarah Keziah Strickland, b 1863 maybe in Isle aux Morte.

    2. Hi Rose, do you have any information on Frances Billards mother? I believe it was Susannah but cannot find a surname. William Billard was her father, son of Gabriel and Miriam. He was apparently married three times. (Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Susannah, no surnamed for any of them) I see I am not the only one trying to fill in this blank. I am a ggg grand daughter of Frances (Fanny) Billard.

  111. Hi, Dorothy ! I was wondering if you can help me. My Great Great Great grandfather was Mathew Morris and my Great Great Great Grandmother was Sophia Reddick. They had a child named Lillian Louise Morris ( my Great Great Grandmother). Lillian did not know her father(Mathew Morris) and only used the surname Morris on her birth certificate, her step father raised her and her name was changed to Lillian Silvea. She was born 1879 . I found Mathew Morris I think. Mathew Morris born in Whycoromagh Inverness N.S. . He had a son named Christopher Morris .Christopher was born 1865 and died 1946 at the age of 81. Christopher’s mother was Mary Ellen Richard( not sure on the surname).Christopher’s death certificate was signed by Indian agent and was to relationship of the deceased from Eskasoni First Nation. Christopher was Mic Maq .So I assume his father Mathew Morris was as well. As I was uncovering the history behind the Morris name I discovered the Morris family is related to the Gould family line and the Denny family line. Is there anything you can pin point or correct or more information that is useful to me in my search for Mathew Morris and his family. thank you!

    1. Hi Dorothy, I have nothing on these Morrises. But googling them, I found Christopher Morris “age 5, shanty, Eskazoni” in the 1871 Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq census. That fits with the birth year for your Christopher. Interestingly, there are 4 people named Morris listed and none are older than 14 years. Going back to the source should show what households they lived in. The list I found is arranged alphabetically. It is from Lucie LeBlanc Consentino’s Acadian & French-Canadian Ancestral Home. The census information comes from a PhD thesis by Daniel P. Strouthes entitled “Change in the Real Property Law of a Cape Breton Island Micmac Band, vol. 2.”

  112. Hello Dorothy. …I was wondering if you have any information on surnames Burgeo standing/brown/Janes/Strickland
    Cheers

    1. Hi Jamie, if you can post specific names you’re looking for, and dates for them, maybe I or readers can help out. They are very large families.

  115. I received a message from a friend today who said he was in upstate NY and met some women with my maiden name that are part of the Cayuga Native American tribe. I have been trying to research if my family has any Native American roots. I am not having any luck with where I should look. I did find out that the Mi’kmaq tribe was quite prevalent where my family was from which is the PEI area. Our family name is Wedge which was originally Aucoin. Can you help me find out any information or tell me where I should begin my search? Thanks

    1. Hi Debbie, thanks for writing. Aucoin is a name found in PEI and throughout Atlantic Canada. It is Acadian and Mi’kmaq – depends on the specific individuals in your family. I just added another Acadian genealogy site on this page (2nd in list). It has information on Aucoins so might be of some help. Also the Acadian one listed above it and Stephen White’s site. If you want to post some names and dates here, maybe I or readers may be able to help you out.

  116. Dorothy, I have been trying to find information about Sarah Jesso born about 1822. Sarah married Andrew Debison and they are both listed in the Bras D’ Or First Nation records. I have been unable to find out what family tree Sarah decends from. Do you have any information pertinent to my query? Sarah Jesso and Andrew Debison would be my great great great grandparents.

    1. Hi Edna

  118. Hi Dorothy . I’m Looking for George Newman Mortons Harbour Newfoundland He had a daughter name Eliza Fudge Newman born in 1863 . Aug 31 1876 George Newman, Wid, Fish, Triton & Dorcas Rendell ( Randell ) , Spin, Triton . At Triton I Don’t know if Dorcas Rendell or Randell is her mother, I’m just wondering is this George Newman part of Mic mac Indian or beuthick indian thanks .

    1. Hi Shawn, I don’t have your George Newman but, googling him, I found a first marriage to Elizabeth Fudge on Jan. 29 1859 in Anglican Marriages (Nf Grand Banks: Nf Vital Stats v. 87 Twillingate). He’s listed as from Twillingate, she from Nipper’s Hr.

On Rootsweb (Ancestry) I found Elizabeth Fudge as d/o Samuel Fudge, b abt 1790 in Dorset England, and Honour, b abt 1795. George and Elizabeth are listed with children Rebecca b May 1856, Samuel b May 1859, Ursula b 1861, Eliza b 6 Apr 1863 Triton, and Elizabeth b 11 Jun 1865 Dark Tickle. With 2nd wife Dorcas Randell, there’s one daughter Louisa b Jun 1865.

Date of birth doesn’t seem right for daughter Elizabeth from 1st marriage. She is listed as married to Augustus Bridger. Eliza, b 1863, is married to James Fudge. 2nd marriage daughter Louisa is married to 1st William Fifield, 2nd Eli Pollard.

If you haven’t found these already, sorry for not putting the links in but I’ve had them mess up my formatting. As for Mi’kmaq or Beothuk, nothing I saw suggests that but I didn’t find his parents. Hope this helps a bit.

      1. ty dorothy god bless reason I asked Eliza Fudge I have a pic of her and the way she is dressed in black she looks native and my gg nan Julia Russell is her daughter and My nan looks dark colour I have pics this is the reason why I asked about George Newman I have no pics for him. Thanks anyway for your info . I’m researching various Collinses in Newfoundland. I would be interested in discussing the Bonavista Collinses with you.

  119. Hi Dorothy,
I am looking for information on my great, great, great grandmother, named Sally Green. My grandfather said she was part Mi’kmaq and part Inuit. She was from Mutton Bay, Labrador. She married John Roberts (I think I may have found his confirmation record – 1871 – age 47 – listed as married – Northern Peninsula – Bonne Bay District). This makes sense because my father’s family is from Norris Point.
Dates of birth/death, genealogy would be much appreciated!

  120. Hi I’m looking for the names of soulis joes parents/grandparents. (He is of native descent) and possibly some history about him. We have some but not a lot . He is our great great great grandfather. Any help would be great! Thanks

  121. I am looking for the mother of Mary Parks born in Bay of Islands Newfoundland and died 1862 Cow Head, Newfoundland . She was the child of Robert Parks and Mary ??? looking for her Micmac roots.

    1. Hi Darlene, Mary Brooks Park’s mother is a bit of a mystery. If you search through the comments here, you’ll find a lot of discussion about her. Her name may have been Mary Joe, but I’m not sure. She may have been born about 1759 in Burin area and died after 1849 in Brook’s Cove, Bay of Islands. She may have also been married to John Brooks. With Robert Park, she may have had sons Thomas Park (b 1796 Bay of Islands d 1870 McIvers BOI) and James Clark Park (b abt 1805).

  122. Hi Dorothy,
I am in search of information regarding the Mi’kmaq ancestry of my great-great grandfather Samuel Barnes (or Bearnes), married to Mary Agnes Rideout. My great grandmother was their daughter, Diana Barnes, whom was married to Jared (Gerard in some documents) Payne of Bonne Bay area. The Mi’kmaq ancestry through the Jared Payne is traced back to the Brake family and Jane Matthews, however, my grandfather said his mother (Diana) was native as well. Do you have any information related to Samuel Barnes and Mary Rideout, or any documentation showing the Mi’kmaq connection? Samuel was said to have come from Nova Scotia originally. Thanks for your time!

    Kind regards,
    Chelsea

    1. Hi Chelsea, I have Samuel Barnes (1843-maybe 1929) as s/o William Barnes (b 1821 Norfolk UK d 1882 Woody Point) and Sarah Maria Yates (b 1824 Norfolk UK d 1895 Bonne Bay).

I have Mary Agnes Rideout (b 1875 Bonne Bay d bef 1945 Norris Point) as d/o Solomon Rideout (1852- bef 1921) and Miriam Alfreda Ash (1859-1911), both born in Carbonear.

I have Alfreda’s parents as Richard Ash and Mary Jane Taylor, both born Carbonear and died Trout River. That’s all I can find on them, but maybe someone reading can help out. Good luck and thanks for writing.

    2. following this.. have there been anymore information on Samuel barnes

      1. Hi Kirsten, I haven’t been able to find any further information on Samuel Barnes. I will be traveling back to NFLD this spring and intend to check out the archives in the hopes of finding more info, or any documents showing the Mi’kmaq connection.

        1. Hi Chelsea. I’m researching my 3rd great grandfather, John Matthews, born 1822 petites, no and died 1882 in Shoal Brook, Newfoundland. He had brothers Samuel and Edward. It is my understanding that he was Mi’kmaq, as well, however I have been unable to prove his parentage. Do you have and information that you’d be willing to share? Thanks

  123. Hi here,

I am looking for information regarding William James Wheeler from Boy of Islands….possibly born Sept. 6, 1881….my great grandfather. I am herring that he possibly had Mi’qmak ancestry. Any information to sure would be wonderful!

    1. Hi Tracey, I found posts from 2005 on a message board on Ancestry about “James and Delilah Wheeler” (sorry, links to these pages mess up my page but you can find it by googling those names). I don’t know if they’re who you are looking for but enough matched with what I had that I thought maybe. If not, the name of your William’s wife or child might help find the right one.

William JAMES Wheeler b abt 1882 in Bay of Islands, married Delilah Samms 1910 in North Sydney, Cape Breton. She was born about 1884 in Codroy, d/o Thomas Samms and Elizabeth surname unknown. I also have Thomas as married to an Elizabeth Ball, with other children. I don’t know if it’s the same woman. Thomas, b 1858 Codroy d 1914 Lark Hr BOI, was s/o Benjamin Samms (1814 Codroy – 1870 Port Aux Basques) and Mary surname unknown. Benjamin was s/o Thomas Samms (b 1778 Bedford England) and Catherine Poole (b 1773 Bay of Chaleur). Catherine’s father was William Poole.

  124. Hi Dorothy,

I am wondering if you can help me. I am trying to determine if I have any Mi’kmaq heritage. As long as I can remember my father has told me that his grandfather was half Mi’kmaq, but I cannot find anything regarding this in my search. His grandfather is Willis Stewart Pinksen, born in Big Cove, NL and Willis’s parents were John Charles Pinksen and Dorothy Pinksen (nee George). I have no idea if their is any validity to my father’s understanding of his grandfather’s background. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Jackie

    1. Hi Jackie, I have Willis Stewart Pinksen (b 1878 Big Cove d 1867 in Wild Cove, White Bay) as s/o John Charles Pinksen (b 1843 Harbour Grace d 1921 Seal Cove, White Bay) and Dorothy George (B 1854 Hants Hr d 1932 Seal Cove). I can’t find parents for John Charles. I have William George and a Newhook (first name unknown) as Dorothy’s parents, but I’m not sure about them. Sorry, I know that’s not much help to you.

    2. Thank you … This much I hadfigured out too.. My dad had always said that Willis was 1/2 Mi’kmaq. I know this is not from the Pinksen side, but perhaps the George side? I have a picture of Dorothy George and that’s all I know. Do you know anything about George family, everyone I know says this Mi’kmac surname?

      Thanks for your help.

      Jackie

      1. Hi Jackie, I agree that the George side would be the best to look at. It’s one of those names where some branches or families have Mi’kmaq ancestry and others don’t. Unfortunately, I know nothing more about your Dorothy George and couldn’t find anything online. Maybe somebody reading will be able to help – hope so.

        1. Thanks again, I think that George is the linage to follow as well. Like I said, there is oral history….my dad also said there is a Mi’kmaq burial ground in his home community of Wild Cove in White Bay.

      2. Hi Jackie: This is Lionel Hartson originally from Corner Brook. My mother was a Pinksen. The man John Charles Pinksen originally came from Derbyshire England. It was three brothers that came here as young teenagers and settled in Harbour Grace. Dorthy was right about Dorthy George from Hants Harbour. My Great Grandmother was Louisa Blake from Peter’s Arm. now renamed Peter’s View which is in the Twillingate area. My Grandmother was Winfred Bertha and she was born in the one room hospital there. I spoke to Louisa’s Neice in Seal Cove and got this information. This lady now has dementia. I was also told by my Grandmother and mother that they never signed the census form due to shame at that time. I hope this gives you a little more to go on. I would look up Newhooks in Hants Harbour and call around to get more information. Good luck. Lionel Hartson

  125. I am following my matrilineal line. I am a descedent of Susannah Poole who married William Anderson, his second wife. I am seeking the parents of Susannah Poole. Born aprox 1822 died aprox 1914. She spent time in Burgeo, Newfoundland. Now I am wondering either she came from England or was she aborignal? 1. Hi Susan, I don’t know if my info is right but I have Susannah’s parents as William Poole and Elizabeth surname unknown. I have John Poole as William’s father and mother unknown. I don’t have a birthplace for Susannah but have Burgeo as where she died. Sorry I haven’t got more on them for you.

Ann Maria Spicknell/Maria Ann Spingle b 22 Sep 1855 Cole Hr Bonavista Bay, d 1 Aug 1931 Neddie’s Hr. They married maybe 1876 in Bonne Bay. 1. I have lots on info on Spingle/Hann related to Snow and Reid families of Quebec and NL

        1. Hi Joy, thanks for the information. I had a bit on these families but you have added more. I found James Spingle/Spicknell as born abt 1826 in England, died 1881 Deep Water Cove, Bonavista Bay. Mary Ann Hann b 1825 Cape Cove, Bonavista Bay. Their daughter as Ann Maria, b 1855 Cole Hr, Bonavista Bay d 1931 Neddies Hr, Bonne Bay. She married Moses Reid 1876 in Bonne Bay and had 6 children.

        2. Hi Joy,
I have been trying to trace my Snow family roots but have limited info. My father was Charles Snow of Rocky Hr. (married Amy Payne of Winterhouse Brook), grandfather Edgar Snow (married Masie Reid), great-grandfather Isaac Snow. I know some of Isaac Snow’s children were baptized in Quebec, along the lower north shore. I have very little beyond this. If you have any info that you could share I would greatly appreciate it!
          Regards,
          Lorraine

    2. Hi

I’m related to Spingle family of Quebec through James Spicknell/Spingle who married my ancestor Mary Hann/Hand of NL

    3. Maria Ann Spingle was related to my family via the Hann/Hand of Bonavista, NL

  127. Hi Dorothy,
I have been looking for information on my possible Mi’kmaq heritage from the west coast of Newfoundland. I was recently told that my family there were, at least in part, Mi’kmaq, but have not been able to confirm this through my own research. My grandfather was Stephen Alley born in 1916 or 17, His parents were Elijah Alley and Martha Hulan. Any information you might have would be extremely helpful to our family understanding our heritage. Thank you

    1. Hi Paul, you may have all the info that I have on your Alley family. But here goes: Your great-grandfather Elijah was son of Elijah Allez, 1840-1927 St. David’s, Bay St. George. He married Ann Morris, b 1843 Barrisway d 1921 St. David’s, d/o Clement Morris and Lydia Hulan.

Elijah Sr. was s/o Nicholas Allez (b 1817 in Guernsey, Channel Islands, d 1858 Sandy Point BSG) and Marie Pierce (1818-1898 St. David’s BSG). Nicholas’ father was John James Allez (b abt 1777 Guernsey, d 1859 Sandy Point). From Ancestry, I have Nicholas’ mother as Martha Jane Hulan, b 1797 in McKay’s BSG, but that doesn’t make sense if Nicholas was born in Guernsey before his father or parents came to Nfld. Also a 20 year difference in their ages.

On the Morris side, Clement’s parents were Robert Morris (b 1782 Dorset England, d 1861 Robinsons BSG) and Eleanor Hulan (1786 McKay’s to 1869 Robinsons). Clement’s wife Lydia Hulan (1810 McKays to 1893 Barrisway) was d/o John Thomas Hulan and Sarah Gale (b 1772, d/o John Gale and Mary Dodge).

With the family names you have, I think you’d find Kirk Butt’s Bay St. George histories valuable. The families have roots in the Channel Islands and UK but also have very long histories in Bay St. George. Remember too if you’re searching records, the spelling variations: Alley/Allez and Hulan/Heulan. Hope this helps and good luck.

      1. Hi!

I’m a recent college grad in Boston, and I’ve been doing a lot of genealogical research on my ancestors from Newfoundland. My family lived on Sandy Point in St. George’s Bay (which I have been fortunate to visit) and recently I found out that Ann Hulan is my 6x great grandmother. Eleanor and Robert Morris are my 5x great grandparents. I saw what I think is your archived email about John Huelin, and I was wondering if you ever figured out where “Garyou” is? I would be very grateful for any information about that… It’s been very exciting discovering this family connection!

        All the best,

        Daniel Seaward

        1. Hi Daniel, nice to hear from you and happy you’re finding family connections in Nfld. Sorry, but you’ll have to remind me about John Huelin and “Garyou”. I can’t remember and can’t find any reference to it on this page. Thanks.

        2. Hi again, I was curious so did some googling. I found the 1999 archived message on a rootsweb forum asking about Garyou. It’s a different Dorothy. I also found a MyHeritage listing for Ann Hulan Swyer, d/o John Huelin. It gives his place of birth as “Garyou, Jersey, Channel Islands.” So I guess it is or was a place in Jersey, although I couldn’t find any mention of it on any Jersey or Channel Is. websites. Maybe there’s a different spelling – perhaps in Jèrriais which, according to Wikipedia, is the traditional language. Anyway, thanks – I’ve learned a bit about Jersey today!

      2. Thank you. I am just seeing this now.
This is definitely helpful. I will purchase a copy of Kirk R Butts book. My families oral history contains a strong Mi’kmaq connection, but it seems to be tricky to track down the specifics.
        Thank you again,
        Paul.

  128. looking for info on leah white ,married William harris and had daughter mary Elizabeth harris ,who married pittman in rcoky hr,nl. leah and William was from trout river , nl. nad they were married in trout river ,nl. on may 10/1887 thanks

Sebastien was s/o Francois Benoit and Anne L’Official. Theotiste was d/o Joseph Marie Jesseau and Marie Josephe Anne Marche. You can find lots of info online for these latter names.

Hope this helps. Just to let you and others know, I and my database will not be online for the rest of May. I’ll approve comments when I can so they’re visible for readers who might be able to help.

  129. Hello, Just wondering if or what info you may have on Thomas Drover & Alfreda George.
Elias George & Mary Anne Rowe . The Drover family were of Heart`s Contents and Upper Island Cove NFLD.

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I see you’ve written before about the Drover, George, Rowe and Gosse families. I have nothing on the names you’ve given, sorry. I’ve moved your comment to this post because there’s a better chance that a reader here will be able to help out. Thanks, and good luck!

    2. My grandfather was Elias drover and his parents were Thomas and Alfreda. I’m wondering if you’re talking about the same family?

  130. Hi Dorothy, I read a volumn of The Micmac Shore that was written by you and Marlene Companion, some time ago. It was so interesting, that I would like to see the other 2 Volumues. Can you tell me where I can fine them? I’ve contacted my ward councillor, Gerard Alexander, but, he doesn’t know where I can get it. You have done us a great service in your research on this,Bay of Islands and Bay St. George area. Thank you so much.

    1. Hi Anna, it should be at the Qalipu office in Corner Brook. It was done for them, not as a public document, so it is not generally available. Thanks for your kind words.

  131. Looking for information on Charlotte young born in 1839 marriage George Reid born in 1843 I think she is Mary Reid mother .Was charlotte young indian of Condroy, Newfoundland.

    1. Hi Linda, I have Charlotte Young (1839-1893), marr George Read/Reid, as mother of Mary Ann Reid (1858-1934 Codroy) marr Reuben Kendall. But I have no parents for Charlotte and can find nothing. I also have a Charlotte Young, b 1832 Codroy, as d/o James Young and Elizabeth Gallop. An Ancestry tree has Charlotte (same date/place) as d/o James Young and Elizabeth Jesso. Neither I nor the Ancestry tree have a husband or children for that Charlotte. I mention her only because the date and place of birth are fairly close. Sorry I can’t find anything else on her.

    2. Hi Linda, I have also been looking for information about Charlotte Young. I was wondering if you were able to find out who her parents were for sure.
      Thank you

      1. no I did not find any thing om charlotte young parent still looking

        1. Hi There
I have a Charlotte Young on my tree…. Her parents I have as James Young and Elizabeth Gallop, as Gallops run in my family line. Elizabeth is my 4th great aunt. She is an Aunt to my 2x gr grandfather Benjamin (Beas) Gallop.

  132. ty for quick reply. Yes you are right about this so far too. I did find out that rebecca sophia shears was born in Barrisway, and interesting ties in Isle aux Morts too. This is pretty ineteresting stuff. And stephen was married to a woman named catherine.

  133. Hello. My grandmothers name was elizabeth brown from rock harbour and she was married to arthur shears. they have lived in burnt isles and rocky harbour, but his family comes from robinsons area. His parents were allan james shears (i believe) and his wife was priscilla gilliam i believe. And I know that my past great uncles were also guides. I am wondering if i have mikmaq heritage.

    1. Hi Sally, using Ancestry trees, I added to the small bit of info I had on your Browns and Shears. You have both Rock Hr and Rocky Harbour. Some Ancestry trees have Rock Harbour for Elizabeth Brown’s family, and I’m not sure if it’s correct or a typo. Rocky Harbour is in Bonne Bay and Rock Harbour is in Placentia Bay, so opposite sides of the island.

I found little that tells me their ancestry, other than Mary Priscilla Gillam’s mother, Rebecca Sophia Shears (1836-1909), is d/o of Stephen Chatter Shears born in 1809 in Devon, England. Not much help, I’m afraid, maybe some readers can add to it. Thanks for writing.

  134. This comment is for Kelli in regard to her Jan 13th 2012 post Samuel Park and Mary Ann Hussey.
Zac Park, my grandfather was the son of Samuel Park. Great Grandfather Samuel (nick name Big Sam) was born out of wedlock to Ellen Park b May 12, 1843, daughter I believe of William and Sarah Park. (if Sarah was a Wheeler I would love to have more details) He is buried in the graveyard across from the church in Cox’s cove. Robert Park was his step father but Big Sam had half brothers and sisters from that union. Ellen had at least three more children before the marriage and Robert had possibly one child before the marriage. Big Sam married Mary Ann Hussey who died in Mt. Moriah and was buried in the old Anglican grave yard Cox’s cove ( No headstone) next to her mother Patience Hussey and across from two of her sons Sam. James and Isaac.

    1. Hi Mary, thanks for the information on Samuel Park. I see that Kelli’s comment is one of those that was lost when this page crashed. That means I have no email address for her so can’t forward this. I hope you see this, Kelli!

  135. after inciudent that happened in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) in 1746, when after over 40 French ships attempting to bring weapons and supplies to the Mi’kmaq of Sipekne’katik district in hopes of driving out the English. This incident decimated over 1/3 to 1/2 of the entire Mi’kmaq population in Sipekne’katik district since the 40 ships that landed in Kjipuktuk carried with them a deadly combination of scurvy, typhus, and typhoid. Around 500 Mi’kmaq from Sipekne’katik district headed out of sheet harbor in over 200 birch bark canoes and headed for Newfoundland to escape from not only the diseases that arrived with the french ships but also from the british who ended up building a fort in Kjipuktuk only 3 years later in 1749.
Many of these Mi’kmaq were remnants of the 3 large clans that once controlled Kjipuktuk (Halifax), along with Mi’kmaq of sheet harbour, musquodoboit, and shubenacadie.

    1. Hi Michael, it’s important to know – and remember – history, so thanks for this reminder.

  137. Hello Dorothy , what a great website you have here. I’m putting together family tree for my new born son . I cannot seem to find any information on a Mary Joyce who had married Mark childs in lark harbour in 1909 . She had passed away in 1965

    1. Hi, and thanks. What a great idea to do for your baby boy! But I’m sorry to say I can’t be of much help. I found Mark and Mary Childs in the 1921 census for Bay of Islands, Lark Harbour. It says Mark was born May 1882 in Bonne Bay, and Mary in Mar 1889 in Lark Hr. Children listed are Amelia, George, Louisa, Sarah, James and Annie. I’m guessing they’re the ones, although Mary’s birth name is not given. Maybe a bit more information – on one of their kids or Mark’s parents – might help me or someone reading find out more for you.

    2. Hi Walker Charles, I have some information on Mary Joyce and Mark Childs. If you are still interested send me an email.

  138. Dear Dorothy,

You mentioned the Poole family of New Harbour on the south coast in a reply you made to a query on June 22, 2014. I was wondering if you recall the source for William, John and Elizabeth Poole and their dates of birth. I’ve just started down the road with this family.

    God Bless
    John Paul Bradford

    1. Hi John, the only information I have on the Pooles you mention is what’s in that comment – “Elizabeth Poole, maybe born 1751, sister of John (b abt 1760) and William Poole (b Bay of Chaleur, near Harbour Breton).” I have no sources noted, I think I got them from another database. I checked Ancestry trees and there is nothing more there. I have Elizabeth as married to Philip Grandy, but no parents for him. William was married to Mary, surname unknown, and I have no name for John’s wife. Not much help to you, I’m sorry.

      1. Hi Dorothy, I have an Elizabeth Poole BIRTH 05 APR 1750 • Warwickshire, England DEATH 27 MAY, 1796 • Garnish, , Newfoundland and Labrador. She was married to Philip Grandy BIRTH 1749 • Isle of Jersey, Channel Islands, U.K
DEATH 1830 • Garnish, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Her parents were John Poole and Mary Stocks. Philips parents were, Philippe Grandin
1724 • de Leouville, Guernsey, Channel Isles DEATH 1764 and mother was Elizabeth Le Gresley
BIRTH 22 MAY 1717 • Val de la Mare, Jersey, Channel Islands DEATH 6 AUG 1788 • St Ouen, Jersey, Channel Islands. Elizabeth and Philip were my 5th great grandparents.

  139. HI,
Thank you for the info on EHE Hacketts dated 22 Jan 2012. Could you please tell me where you got the information that Elizabeth Saunders , wife of Thomas Hynes , was a Mi’kmaq woman? Do you have anymore info on the Saunders family?
I am tracing the indigenous lines of Michael Hackett and Elizabeth Hynes .
Thank you very much for your time.

    1. Hi Jaci, the comment you mention from 22 Jan 2012 was written by a reader, not me. I have no documentation on whether Elizabeth Saunders was Mi’kmaq. For Elizabeth Hynes and Michael Hackett, I have them as married 28 Nov 1892. She was born 1872 English Hr East, died 1933 Bay of Islands, d/o Joseph Hynes (b 1843 English Hr East d 1929 Bay of Islands) and his first wife Martha Murphy (b English Hr E d abt 1882 Wood’s Is). Joseph was s/o Thomas Hynes and Elizabeth Saunders. I don’t know Martha’s parents.

I have Michael Hackett (b 1866 English Hr E, d 1933 Bay of Islands) as s/o William Hackett and Elizabeth Smith (no dates, except for marriage 8 Oct 1862 in Fortune Bay). William Hackett’s parents were John Hackett, possibly born in Labrador, and Ann Loughlin, born Flat Islands in Placentia Bay. Elizabeth Smith’s father may have been John Charles Smith. I don’t know her mother’s name. Hope this helps.

      1. Hi Dorothy,

Do you have the documents for Michael Hackett, William Hackett (marriage cert/birth certificate), and John Hackett (birth certificate)? Do you have anything showing John Hackett’s parents?

Do you have anything showing they are Mi’kmaq

      2. It would also be great to know where you got this information 🙂
can you please send a link?

        Thanks, Dorothy!

        1. Hi Bren, I have no documentation for any Hacketts or Elizabeth Hynes. The info I have comes from family trees that others have shared with me, Ancestry trees and sites like NLGenWeb.

  140. Hi Dorothy,
I’m looking for further information on my family Payne and Rideout who lived in Wildcove NFLD.
My Grandfather Harry Payne was born to Lila Rideout and George Payne. He had a sister Susan. Lila died in late 1800s when my grandfather was 20. George remarried a women with the last name of Fox and had 6-8 more children. I’m curious to find out if Lila had native origins after seeing her picture that was stored upside down in a bureau built by by gifted grandfather who refused to answer any of our questions.

    1. Hi Wendy, I don’t have Harry Payne, Lila or their parents but I found this marriage record on Nf Grand Banks in Twillingate Congregational Parish Records 1877-1902:
“Aug 26 1889, George PAYNE, 26, bach, [occ.] fish,[res.] Twillingate, [father] Charles Payne, [minister] John F. Geddes, [married]
Lilla RIDEOUT 24, spin, [res.] Twillingate, [father] Philip Rideout NOTES: George was the s/o Charles & Martha Payne, & likely grandson of George Payne. He md (2) widow Lucy A. Simmonds. Lilla was b Jan 10 1866 Wild Cove – d Aug 16 1901 Wild Cove age 36 yrs; her mother was Jane Fox.”

I also found, on NLGenWeb Notre Dame Bay Multi-Denominational Births 1892-1894, a birth record for Ada Mary Paine, b 25 July 1892 Wild Cove Twillingate, parents George and Lilah (Rideout). Research notes say “Maiden name was given in entry. Lilla Rideout was b Jan 10 1866 Twill, the d/o Philip Rideout & Jane Fox.”

So Ada Mary would be Harry’s sister, and Lila’s mother’s name was Jane Fox, George’s 2nd wife was Lucy Simmonds – being a widow, that last name was probably her 1st husband’s. That’s all I can find. I hope it helps you some.

  141. Hi Dorothy! Just wanted to note that unfortunately, Jonie Billard passed away a number of years ago, and the link you have above for her page on descendants of Gabriel Billard no longer works (genealogy.com has removed it and its child URLs).

I’ve been adding Billard genealogy info for the past few years to wikitree, which is an open source genealogical site; feel free to link to this. It includes a lot of links to source documentation whenever possible, too (for example, Gabriel Billard’s original birth record from the Government of France archives).

Gabriel and his descendants can be found here: http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Billard-Descendants-10

    1. Thank you, Jeff, for letting me know this. I will update the Billard link to your site now.

  142. Hi Dorothy,

I’m looking for information on my grandmother Elizabeth Rose Samms 1928 – 2003, Stephenville or her family history. She had a brother, Russell Samms of Cape Anguille. She married Charlie Collier and settled in Barachois Brook. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I thought your question would be really easy to answer. But it’s not. I have a Russell Samms who fits in terms of date of birth. But your Elizabeth Rose’s obit does not mention other brothers or sisters. The Russell I have had siblings and I do not have Elizabeth Rose as one of them. I found Charlie Collier, with his family, and Elizabeth listed as his wife but no other information. Maybe somebody reading can help out?

      1. Thank you. My grandmother’s original identity has been a family mystery. My mother, Aunts and Uncles all grew up knowing their mother as Elizabeth Collier nee Samms. But none of that fits with the research I’ve done. Thanks again.

    2. Hi Elizabeth
I was just doing some on my home community of Barachois Brook and seen your message. Are you still looking for information…what type?

I spent my childhood at my grandmother’s house which was situated next door to Elizabeth and Charles Collier. In fact, I grew up with two of their children. I have lots of memories.

  143. Hi Dorothy,
Happy New year I was wondering if you had any information on a William Henry Wells who married Alice Power
in Carbonear in 1878.I can’t seem to find any information on either, Any help would sure be appreciated, thank you for your time
    William was born 1847

    1. Hi Charles, I haven’t had much luck with either Wm Henry Wells or Alice Power. I did find their marriage in the Carbonear RC records, with witnesses Patrick Dawley and Ellen Dawley. I wondered if she might be a sister, but couldn’t find anything more. I found someone else looking for your William and Alice I think. Larry Wells in Sept 2004 on Nf Grand Banks posted “Looking for any information on the father of William Wells b 1847 married to Alice b 1854. They had 3 children born in Carbonear NFLD, John abt1880, Joseph abt1883, and Mary Joseph abt1885.” You may know him, but if not, there is an email address for him. Not much help, sorry, but good luck and happy new year to you too!

  144. I am very interested finding any info on my g-g-g-grandmother Lavinia Bursey born1860 In Old Perlican, NL and died in Port aux Basques, NL on Dec. 21, 1945. She was married to John Lowe of Hant’s Hr., NL. Lived and buried in Shoal Hr., NL. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  145. Thank you for the great reading
And info – lots oh great stuff .
Looking to get in touch with Tami
    From jan 18 2012
    James McFatridge
    Married Susan march(e)
Father was a Frances March e
Would you have any info on him
Said to be native from Nova Scotia

    1. Hi Eric, I have sent your comment and email address on to Tami. I don’t have much on this James McF and Susan Marche. I have a few Francis/Francois Marches but none showing them to be from NS or with a daughter Susan. If you want to send some dates and/or places, maybe I or someone reading might be able to match people up. Thanks for writing.

  146. Hello Dorothy, I appreciate the help you have given me so far and i am very close to connecting the dots to prove my native heritage . I am doing this for two reasons to apply for status and because in starting this journey i have become very interested in my roots. My question is how feasible is it to apply given the problems right now. I have some personal info if you would like to email me. Thank you

    1. Hi Sharon, I’ll email you. Speaking generally, there are various routes for applying for status depending on the band you want to join. The Dept of Indigenous Affairs or the band itself would have more details.

  147. I have been trying to dig up info on my 6x’s G Grandfather(John ?) Kendall (ell) born 1735-40 I believe. He had a son John born abt 1760/65 (do not have his wife but do have their 8 children), and a daughter Grace who may have died in 1853, married to a William Lee born 1764-1838, of Round Harbour (I have both their lines) but can not get further back than Grace and John in my Tree. I have been looking in Devon, England?? but do not have enough data to track him down even if I am in the correct place. Would you happen to have any info on Grace and John Kendall (ell)’s Father.

    1. Hi Barbara, sorry, I have nothing more on your Kendalls than what you have. Let’s hope someone reading can help out.

  148. Hello! I am happy to find this page – I have been looking for some time to find the connection of the Keeping and/or Nash family to the Mi’kmaq … my Grandparents are Harold & May Keeping from Pushthrough, his parents: Andrew Keeping 1882 March 5, 1946 & Angela (Organ) Keeping June 21, 1884 November 12, 1951 (Family ~ William, James, Cecil, Lorenzo, Theadore, Chester)
Mays Parents: Charles Nash 1889 Feb Saddle Island &
Frances Nash Wife 1894 Jun 27 Ramea,
NASH May F Daughter Single 1912 Oct 8 Saddle Island
I would be so grateful if you have any clear information! Sincererly, Yvette!

    1. Hi Yvette, I don’t think I know much more about your Keeping and Nash families than you do. In case it helps readers locate them, I found May (Nash) Keeping’s mother’s birth name as Frances Jane Cutler (b 1893 Fox Is. d 1976 Halifax) d/o John Henry Cutler and Sarah Kendall b & d Ramea and/or Burgeo). I’m curious about Angela Organ, wife of Andrew Theodore Keeping, but can’t find her parents. I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but remember you might find the name Keeping also as Kippin or Kippins. Good luck, and if I find anything I’ll let you know.

  149. Hi Dorothy,
I am trying to determine my Mi’kmaq ancestry and believe some of my ancestors may have lived in Chaleur Bay near Harbour Breton. Do you have any info such as the surnames of any residents and whether or not they were identified or recognized as native. Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

    1. Hi Hector, I see from your June 22 2014 comment that your great-grandmother was Sarah Rachel Kearley, b 1862 Belleoram d 1928, d/o James Kearley and Elizabeth Grandy. The information I have on the family is in my reply to you then – in case this helps someone reading who may have more information.

Googling Kearley now, I found other people also researching the family on the NGB Nf and Lab Genealogy Research Interests Forum: Old. If you haven’t seen this, look under “Kearley” but also search the name within the page. There is contact info for the researchers, although it is indeed old. I see it might be spelled Cary or Carey. For sure Mi’kmaq people would have been been familiar with the area, but I don’t know what surnames would be local to it. Sorry, I know that’s not much help!

  150. Hi
I’m looking for some info on Elizabeth stonley who married my great grandfather James Nicholas Currie in sheet harbour n.s. she was originally from bay island and was a full native. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you

    1. Hi Samantha, I have nothing, sorry. I found what might be them listed in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Sheet Harbour – James N. Currie 1867-1936 and Elizabeth J. Currie 1873-1957. But you likely know that already. If anyone can help, please do.

  151. Hello,
I am trying to ascertain if my family has Aboriginal roots.
Surnames: French, Tucker, Courage, Curtis, Stone, Sacrey, Chipman, Vokey – all hailing from Harbour Grace/Bryant’s Cove Newfoundland. The dates go as far back as 1770.
What information can I forward to you, if this is at all possible?
    Thank you,
    Debra

    1. Hi Debra, you could post a few names here, with their dates, of those in any of these families that you think might be aboriginal. Maybe I or readers will have some more information on them. The surnames and geographic area are not ones that I have much info on, but you never know what connections might show up.

    2. Hi Dorothy, I understand Ann (?) DOB 1750 married John Pike DOB 1744 from Carbonear may have been Inuit. However I am unable to find any form of documentation, just word of mouth.
They would be my 5th great grandparents.
Any suggestions on where to look?
      Many thanks,
      Debra

      1. Hi Debra, in Ancestry trees I found John James Pike, b 1744 in Carbonear Nfld or Red Bay Labrador, married 1774 to Ann “Inuit”, b 1750. But I don’t know what that identification is based on. Some trees have another wife’s name, Alice – same birth year so maybe same person. Children are listed as Mary (1780), Catherine (1781), Francis (1783), Samuel (1785), William (1786) and Thomas (1787). Mary’s husband is William Pye, b 1786 in Cape St. Charles, Labrador or Bay of Islands, Nfld. The Pye house in Cape Charles is a heritage house – here’s a link, it’s lovely!

You might look online or at PANL for Carbonear/Harbour Grace and Labrador south coast records, especially about the Labrador fishery. Good luck!

      2. Hi Debra, Just seeing these messages. I am also looking for information on Anne (DOB) 1750 married to John Pike as they are showing as my 6th great grant parents in records I have found. In one of the records it says Anne’s surname was Cole and that she was Inuit. Possibly from Labrador but married in Carbonear. I wondered if you had found any other information on her since your post. Would be interested in knowing. thanks

  152. Hi Dorothy, I read a comment from a member regarding Peddle/Kendall,Kendell a while back. I am related to these names and if I can help anyone I would be more than willing to do so. Thank you. Love your site.
    Susan

  153. Hi Dorthy, greetings from Mishkeegogamang FN in northern Ontario!! love your website! I know this is a long shot but I was wondering if you may have any information on a John Charles Young. He was my great great grandfather and was married to a Mi’Kmaq woman possibly names Lucie, or a variation of that spelling. I believe she was from NL, and John from NS. I know there are probably so many men with the same name, but I am in search of answers pertaining to the Mikmaq side. Thanks so much, have a great day!

    1. Hi Ronald, thanks. You’re right – there are a lot of John Charles Youngs ;). I have none married to a Lucie.
