Having problems offering Windows Remote Assistance (Vista Home Premium)

A bit long in the tooth this, apologies in advance.

Brother-in-law is not very computer savy and I spend a lot of time on the phone trying to talk him through basic things.

We both have Vista Home Premium and have been trying to offer him help via Windows Remote Assistance. But for some reason it will not work :(

I was at his house on Friday and I tried a test. I used my nieces laptop (his daughter) and got him to open WRA and send me a request via email. I logged into my email via the web and saved it to the desktop on the laptop.

I then opened WRA and opened the request file, typed in the password and it all worked without any problems.

Yet when we try and do it from my house to his, it fails :thumbsdow

So I am guessing it something wrong at my end that's stopping it from working. When I open WRA on my computer and put the password in, it comes back with that the other end might have closed WRA. When in actual fact they have not.

My niece also tried a request via Windows Live Messenger and that would not work either. So has to be my end that's stopping it. I am guessing my router is to blame somehow.

They are on Orange and using a Live Box. No settings have been messed with its all as when installed. They use AVG Internet Security and do not use Windows Defender or Firewall.

I too have the same AVG package and do not use Windows Defender or Firewall.

My router is the Buffalo Wireless-G WBMR-G125.

When I go into WLM and go to options/connection it says "You are connected to the Internet through a non-UPnP port restricted NAT. (User)."

I had read that this can be a problem for email requests. I have been into my router settings and I have an option to enable/disable UPnP and its set to enable by default. So I am unsure as to why in WLM its a non-UPnP port

I am certain the fix will be really easy (I hope) but due to my lack of networking/router setting skills, I am unsure what the solution is.

If anyone can point me in the right direction to fix this, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Gazza.

Hiya, not used WRA at all as I use VNC which is a free remote access tool

I think i've read your post correctly, you both have no firewall running on both Vista PC's and routers? Has your b-in-law got port forwarding set up on his adsl router to forward the WRA onwards to the host?

We both use the firewall that comes with AVG Internet Security. Just not using Vista's built in version.

Both routers have firewalls enabled.

No settings have been changed at the brother-in-laws end. Laptop and PC in same house via same router connect fine via WRA.

No port forwarding rules have been set.

It would appear the problem is with my router. It says it can enable/disable UPnP... and it is set to enable.

But if I run Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool it fails on UPnP... so I am at a loss as to why

Going to give Team Viewer a try tomorrow night and see if it works.

But it would be nice if WRA worked from the off. However the more I read the more I understand that NAT and UPnP play a big part on whether it actually works.

As i mention, just try port forwarding on the remote router, a quick google shows port 3389 for WRA...i'm no networking expert but having a mess about on your own network is good practice... VNC is good btw, not had any issues so far. My telecomms company has started to rollout the eVNC software instead of using Windows products

I have put the port forwarding in on mine and will try it out later tonight. Also going to give the other one I linked to above a whirl too.

With a bit of luck port forward will sort it out.

The port forward did nothing at all.

However Team Viewer worked like a dream

The port forwarding wouldn't have worked if you just added it on your router, needs to be on the remote router, but good to hear you you got teamviewer working anyway...any good?

If no changes have been made to the other router, why does WRA work within the house between laptop and PC? Is because they are sharing the same connection.

Team Viewer is super easy to use. Generates a new logon ID plus password each time its used. You can transfer files between connections.

I just open it up and wait for the other side to let me know the login details.... and that's it.

When you try and connect to your bro-in-laws pc over the net, the router (with the ISP assigned IP) needs to forward the request onto your local networked PC, it worked on your laptop at his house as you were on the same network.

Just as I thought, thanks for clarifying it though :smashin:

As it happens Team Viewer is a dream to use, no messing with loads of settings etc :)

WRA is hit and miss it would seem and a defo miss for me.
