iPhone In Sealed Apple Box - Is It Locked ?

Hi,

I have just received an iPhone 4 in a cellophane sealed Apple box from Orange as an upgrade. Orange shipped the phone with an external envelope containing the SIM attached to the sealed iPhone box.

Would anyone know if the phone is actually unlocked and only becomes locked when a SIM is inserted and the phone is activated? If this is the case then would it become locked to another network if their SIM were the SIM in the phone when it was turned on and activated?

It seems that Orange are getting the phones from Apple in cellophane sealed Apple boxes and shipping them to customers without opening the Apple box but sending the SIM externally? Apple may of course be locking the phones to Orange at source on behalf of Orange then packaging them before putting them in the supply chain?

localboy27 is right locking options are set in a central database at Apple, which the networks also have access to.

They don't need to open the phone's packaging.

Thx for the replies.

The IMIE number is on the box and looks as though it is also barcoded as well as present as a number. Presumably the barcode or similar is stored in the Apple database recording the Network provider that the phone was shipped to as Orange.
