Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

TED Talks have earned an enviable reputation for public speaking that likely only increases the jitters for most people called on to make presentations. But after analyzing 500 presentations, Gallo, author of The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs (2009), identifies the common elements that make TED Talks so successful. He offers nine secrets, including mastering the art of storytelling, being passionate about the subject matter, speaking conversationally, using humor, delivering “jaw-dropping moments,” and keeping presentations to 18 minutes. Gallo divides the lessons into three parts, focusing on the emotional, novel, and memorable. Drawing on research by psychologists and communication experts, Gallo provides detailed analysis of TED Talks. The book is most fascinating, however, when Gallo recalls interviews with some of the most successful TED speakers, offering recollections of their processes in preparing for the talk. Gallo’s references to particular TED speakers are sure to send readers to the TED website to check on the talks themselves. This is sound advice and encouragement for those who need to make presentations and an enjoyable resource for fans of TED Talks. --Vanessa Bush

I'll preface this by saying that books written by business coaches/consultants usually annoy the heck out of me, as they are generally filled with narcissistic self-references and do a horrendous job summarizing actual scientific findings. To some extent, this book does the same. But while other such books usually garner 1-star reviews from me, "Talk Like Ted" has its redeeming qualities. As many others have noted, this could have been a much, much shorter book; as such, I recommend taking what you need from it and skipping the rest, as it's easy to get the point of each chapter by the first one-third of it. I liked the main point each chapter provides, but I felt like they fell short on application. For example, in Chapter 1, Gallo repeats over and over again the importance of passion, but does nothing to provide guidance on how the reader can find such passion. I guess this reflects his lack of knowledge of the science behind such principles. Despite all of the shortcomings of this book, though, I do believe a reader can sort through it for things to apply to one's own presentation opportunities. At the very least, while nothing in this book is cutting edge knowledge, it does contain enough reminders that can escape our consciousness after a while.

Gallo's in-depth analysis of the best speakers of our time is a superb resource sure to up your public speaking game. Last fall I drew heavily on it while preparing and delivering a Veterans Day presentation for two local middle schools. "Tell stories" and "use emotionally potent examples" served as my guiding principles, and they made everything easier to remember, more fun to deliver, and more pleasurable for the audience to receive.

This isn't a basic how-to for novice speakers, but it doesn't claim to be. For comprehensive coverage of the nuts and bolts basics, consider Carnegie's timeless classic, The Art of Public Speaking (its copyright is expired, and so can be found online for free), or for more concise coverage of the same, consider my
The Best Public Speaking Book: How to Conquer Nervousness, Polish Your Authentic Stage Self, Develop & Deliver Dynamite Presentations . (When I revise The Best Public Speaking Book, Gallo will be cited for sure!)

Thanks for the excellent book, Gallo! You and Brian Tracy have helped take my public speaking game to the next level, and Talk Like Ted is a resource I anticipate revisiting many times.

I have been a fan of the 18 Min TED talk videos, which not only give astonishing insights on numerous topics and which lead me to find of interesting reads (like Susan Cains „Quiet“). But do not get me wrong, „talk like TED“ is not a loose summary of the most important (read: watched) TED videos, Mr. Gallo takes a deep analysis why certain videos are successful transferring very difficult topics to the public – and this feat takes only 18 minutes (sometimes a little more ;) ).
Without going too much into detail resp. spoilering too much, the book is divided into three section, the first one on how to touch the emotional level of the audience by using e.g. by employing story telling. The middle section focuses on the importance of novelty by, for example delivering jaw dropping moments, while the last part covers the third column of a successful TED talk, being memorable.
Basically, the author describes on how to use the techniques employed by the most speakers to improve your own presentations in business or private context not only to transfer information but doing this in new, fresh ways for easier memory resp. recall by the recipients. Not all examples can be transferred to each and every speech (like unleashing mosquitoes or using a blow-torch), but the structure presented gives a bunch of hints on how to improve your stage acting. I liked the presentation style / language of the book, the length of a chapter were ideal for an evening read. Recommendation 5 stars.
