NEW YORK, NY — People around the globe are getting ready to celebrate the new year, but no place does it quite like New York City. The annual ball drop in Times Square draws thousands of people out into city streets, making it one of the largest parties in the world.

It's no wonder why millions more, regardless of where they live, watch the festivities unfold on TV each year. Recent advances in technology have also made it possible to watch livestreams on your cell phone or computer.

Times Square ball-drop livestream

The livestream above is courtesy of the Times Square Alliance, the nonprofit organization that maintains Times Square and runs many of the area's programs. It is free to watch and has no commercials, compatible with cell phones and web browsers.

Several TV networks will be competing to show viewers the same exact thing from slightly different angles, so the choice really comes down to your preference of hosts and special performances.

The in-person celebration in Times Square will be smaller this year due to the citywide spike in COVID-19 cases caused by the omicron variant. Only 15,000 vaccinated people will be allowed into the viewing areas on Dec. 31, compared to the typical capacity of 58,000.
