You can find this movie streaming everywhere, however, I wanted my own physical copy. If you get the DVD of the movie purchase the Paramount version as that is unabridged and unedited. Some of the other companies who distribute this film will edit out important scenes. This movie is a masterpiece for what it is. The acting is fantastic and each shot of the film is perfect! The message is wonderful I see something new every time I watch this movie.

My wife and I watched this movie on Amazon Prime, not expecting much. We were pleasantly surprised, though, as the movie’s story unfolds with genuine human emotion. Despite its low budget and lack of expensive production one typically sees in most movies these days, it is very well done and reasonably well acted by no big-name actors. It’s an emotional movie that contains a far amount of humor and drama, but its biggest messages are those of redemption, love, community, and appreciation for life. I was so moved by this movie, which is perfect for watching at Christmas time, that I was compelled to order it on DVD.

I'll start by saying that I absolutely love this movie. The story is great, a human story about something I feel could actually happen. I'm not Catholic so I'm not going to critique the church or any religious aspects of the movie, and that's a huge part of the story. I was happy to find it on Amazon to purchase, but do not order this particular copy. There are so many scenes that are cut! The first one I noticed is the first scene with the Tree Kings, then the lack of background sound in the first pub scene. What is that...15 minutes in? I turned it off, will probably donate it and will watch the full movie on Prime even though there's a weird echo when the sound increases. Whoever is responsible for producing DVDs of this movie needs to get it together and offer the whole thing for sure!

The correct religious approach between a righteous robotic RC priest versus a homespun version of the same cloth seems, at first, to be the theme of this curiously affecting film. But the difference between these two men is a superficial one: both are too eccentric to represent the church. Simeon, the local pastor of a dwindling congregation, seems to be the genuine article, intent on the care of his flock. But he has some issues as a drunkard and a slob plus seems to identify more with the secular expressions of 'peace on earth' as evidenced a fave holiday party than with the potential for ritualistic devotion. Jonathan, who arrives to investigate the failing parish and determine its future, is more complex. We are not meant, as an audience -- and despite his physical appeal -- to like him. But we find chinks in his cold antisocial armor that draw us in. The growing tension between these seeming opposites, however, is not the story. The focus shifts and evolves elliptically via a non-catholic, who attends mass with her devout grandmother, and who is involved in a toxic relationship with a rich unethical man. Both priests are attracted to her but she, as matters unfold, is drawn to the blond curmudgeon rather than to the boozy pastor. The atmosphere in which this drama takes place are the few days before and after Christmas and a significant snowfall on Cape Cod that allows some stunning shots of a winter village by the sea. There is real chemistry between the unlikely lovers Jane Austen style -- civilities breached to indicate deeper feelings. I sense that catholics might feel cheated at a missed opportunity in which their religion is upstaged by romance, but there are some heartening moments that make one feel that churches can revive and find their purpose. These scenes do feel tacked on, but the ambience of spiritual forces at work does not fail entirely. It is simply that the heart of the movie is all about finding where your energies should be placed and how love can triumph against all odds.
Anyway, NOELLE is a good romance when all is said and done. Not many of them around these days -- certainly not with priests who look like Robert Redford and ride a scooter!

I watched this movie last year at Christmas while sick with Covid and may have reviewed it then. I don't remember. I watched it again this year and liked it even more this time around. The movie is a powerful take on the theme of guilt which is hardly ever dealt with in movies today. It is a love story, but it is not the traditional drivel we get this time of year. The characters are irreverent and funny sometimes, but they are always real. The movie is extremely well shot. I have seen so many poor examples of theater lately from people you would think know better. This movie is hauntingly beautiful in its writing, directing, and picture. Last year, I would have called the acting wooden, but this year, I think the actors were just being more subtle in their approach to characters. I do think some lines might be better delivered, but there is really something to say for the understated method of acting here. I guess it took really bad cinema for me to realize how wonderful a well set up shot, a well written line, and a subtle clue from the actor really are. They all work together to make one of my favorite films of all time.

Loved the views of the New England coast. Loved the fact that the characters seem like real people, not perfect ones. A lovely film to watch before Christmas... no big time actors but one of the main characters sure looks like a young Robert Redford!

I found this movie when I searched prime for Robert Redford movies. He looks like RR but is not even close. The acting is horrid but the reviews said to stick with it so I did. Save your time. Not good.

Acquistato a scatola chiusa, fidandomi dapprima dell'istinto, poi della positività delle recensioni. Pienamente soddisfatta. La storia è bella, intensa, ben diretta e interpretata. Consigliato a chi non si accontenta dei soliti cliché.
