Nicolaus of Luxemburg (1322-30 July 1358) was the illegitimate son of King John the Blind of Bohemia and the Patriarch of Aquileia from 1350 to 1358.

Biography

Nicolaus was born in 1322 in Prague, the illegitimate son of John the Blind of Bohemia. Pope Clement VI appointed him provost of the Diocese of Prague, and in 1348 he became dean of the church of Olmutz and a royal chancellor. On 7 January 1349, he was appointed Bishop of Naumburg, and on 31 October 1350 he became the new Patriarch of Aquileia, having never taken office as Bishop of Naumburg. However, Count Henry III of Gorizia attacked Cassacco, destroying the town, and Albert II of Austria also attacked Aquileia; Nicolaus was forced to give Venzone and some other castles to the Duchy of Austria to appease the invaders. Later, he would ally with the County of Gorizia, Padua, Louis I of Hungary, and the dukes of Austria against the Republic of Venice, and the 13 January 1358 Venetian defeat at Nerveza forced Venice to cede Dalmatia and Croatia to Hungary. In 1358, Nicolaus died in Belluno.
