Naples, located on Southwest Florida's Paradise Coast is home to the historic Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. With an overall average high temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 65, it is no wonder that Naples is a popular vacation destination for beach-goers and golf enthusiasts year-round.

Besides boasting one of the most beautiful downtown areas in Florida—which showcases the city's vast number of art galleries—Naples' award-winning beach is not far and is reason enough to pack a bathing suit for your trip. Even if the Gulf waters are a bit chilly in the winter, soaking up the sunshine or taking a stroll on the beach is not out of the question. Other items on your packing list should include cool attire in the summer, perhaps shorts and sandals, and a light jacket or sweater for the winter. Of course, you should note that the area's restaurants are a bit classy, and you should dress accordingly when dining out in the city—bring along stylish resort wear and dressy sandals and you'll fit right in.

Of course, the weather in Florida is extreme, and Naples is no exception. The lowest recorded temperature in Naples was a very chilly 26 degrees Fahrenheit in 1982 and the highest recorded temperature was 99 degrees Fahrenheit in 1986. On average, Naples's warmest month is July and January is the average coolest month while the maximum average rainfall usually occurs in July.

Hurricane Season

Florida's hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30; and, although Naples, like most of Florida's West Coast, has not been affected by a hurricane in recent years, its coastal location leaves it vulnerable. If you are planning on visiting Florida during these months, be sure to heed these tips for traveling during hurricane season to keep your family safe and protect your vacation investment.

Spring in Naples

With temperatures climbing across the season and the rains staying away until late May, spring is an excellent time of year to plan your trip to Naples. In March, the city experiences an average high of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 58, and by May, the high climbs to 89 while the low rises to 68. Similarly, the temperature of the Gulf of Mexico jumps drastically from an average of 71 in March to an average of 82 degrees Fahrenheit in May, making it a great time to swim before the hurricane season hits in June.

What to Pack: Your packing list will vary depending on whether you visit in early or late spring. In March and April, Gulf temperatures climb to the upper 70s, meaning you may want to bring a bathing suit, but nighttime lows are still in the 50s, so you may want to bring a sweater or even a light jacket if you plan on doing some exploring after dark.

Average Air and Gulf of Mexico Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • March: 70 F — Gulf temperature of 71 F — 2.25 inches over 6 days
  • April: 74 F — Gulf temperature of 77 F — 2.29 inches over 4 days
  • May: 78 F — Gulf temperature of 82 F — 3.35 inches over 8 days

Summer in Naples

Both the hottest and wettest season of the year, the summer in Naples is one of the most volatile times in the city in terms of the weather. With the arrival of hurricane season, the likelihood of tropical storms and resulting rainfall are pretty high throughout June, July, and August. However, this doesn't stop tourists from flocking to the sandy shores of Naples for summer vacation, so you can also expect to see prices increase for airfare and accommodations this time of year.

While average high temperatures tend to peak in the lower 90s and average lows hover around 70 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the season, rain is expected on about half the days of summer. Fortunately, most of these summer storms are brief—if not heavy—meaning you'll still have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sun and sand on Naples' pristine beaches.

What to Pack: While you'll obviously want to pack your bathing suit, sunscreen, and light clothing to help you beat the heat, you may also want to consider investing in a parka, raincoat, or rain hat since the hurricane season often brings a deluge of rainfall to the area.

Average Air and Gulf of Mexico Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • June: 82 F — Gulf temperature of 86 F — 8.89 inches over 13 days
  • July: 83 F — Gulf temperature of 87 F — 9.18 inches over 14 days
  • August: 83 F — Gulf temperature of 87 F — 9.02 inches over 16 days

Fall in Naples

Fall is another great time to visit Naples because crowds have often subsided after the Labor Day holiday but the weather is more pleasant this time of year than it is in the brutally hot and stormy summer. As temperatures start to drop, the frequency of tropical storms lessens at the start of the fall season. While September still sees average highs in the 90s and over 15 days of rainfall throughout the month, October highs drop into the upper 80s and rain falls for less than nine days, accumulating four inches less than in September.

What to Pack: If you're traveling in September, be sure to bring a rain jacket and umbrella as tropical storms are likely to occur throughout the month; however, while the hurricane season technically runs through November, the chance of rainfall decreases over the season, so you should be fine with just an umbrella in October and November. You should also bring a variety of shorts, pants, t-shirts, and tank tops for day adventures and a light pullover sweater for evenings by the water.

Average Air and Gulf of Mexico Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • September: 82 F — Gulf temperature of 86 F — 8.66 inches over 15 days
  • October: 78 F — Gulf temperature of 81 F — 3.82 inches over 9 days
  • November: 73 F — Gulf temperature of 73 F — 2.09 inches over 7 days

Winter in Naples

With temperatures hovering between lows in the 50s and highs in the mid-70s for most of the season, winter is a great time to visit Naples if you want to avoid the crowds while enjoying the pristine beaches—especially considering the season is one of the driest times of year in terms of rainfall and humidity. Gulf temperatures stay in the mid-60s throughout the winter, so it may not be the best time to swim, but you can still enjoy laying out on the beaches in Naples this time of year since daytime highs for December, January, and February are around 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

What to Pack: Throw in some slacks, dress shoes, and light sweaters in addition to shorts, shirts, and sandals to accommodate for the varying weather of the season. You may also want to bring a pullover jacket in case you plan on spending any time by the ocean at night when temperatures are at their lowest.

Average Air and Gulf of Mexico Temperatures and Rainfall by Month:

  • December: 68 F — Gulf temperature of 68 F — 1.71 inches over 6 days
  • January: 66 F — Gulf temperature of 66 F — 2.06 inches over 6 days
  • February: 68 F — Gulf temperature of 66 F — 2.32 inches over 6 days

When it comes to choosing the right time of year to visit Naples, Florida, there are several factors about the climate to consider before booking your travel. While the winter months are some of the driest, fewer daylight hours and lower temperatures mean you won't be able to enjoy some of the city's outdoor attractions. On the other hand, while the summer is the wettest season of the year, you'll find plenty of sunny days where you can enjoy long hours on the beaches or in the Gulf of Mexico splashing around in the warm waters.
