Serial, a podcast dedicated to solving a case of a young teenager - Hae. Hae was murdered on January 13, 1999 and shortly Adnan was arrested for potential murder. One key alibi that led to Adnan’s arrest is Jay’s testimonies that had evidence piled against Adnan. Due to Jay’s testimonies, Adnan is not guilty because Jay is not a reliable piece of evidence. Jay is unreliable because he had admitted to lying. Detective: “Why did you lie about the location [where Hae was killed]?”Jay: “Uh, I figured there was cameras there or somebody had spotted him doing what he was doing.”Detective: “But if you actually didn’t assist with her murder . . .”Jay: “But I’m associated. I’m associated.” (Episode 4.). If he lied about where the body was buried witch
In the Podcast, Serial, Jay Wilds is a main character whose alibi and story from episode one to four. The reporter, Sarah Koenig, maps the whole case out for us. Jay has given a minimum of seven different stories about what happened on January thirteenth. Four police interviews, two trial testimonies, and most recently, an interview he gave to the Intercept.
Firstly, the Nisha call placed Adnan with Jay after the murder. This call could have been a butt-dial that rang for 2 minutes. The call could have been from Adnan, who wanted to make Jay talk with Nisha. The Nisha call does not prove Adnan killed Hae, as it simply just puts him with Jay at the time. Also, the prosecution stated that Adnan was constantly doing bad things. Everyone does bad things, but it does not make them murderers. Finally, Jay knew the location of Hae’s car. The fact that Jay knew the location of Hae’s car should arouse suspicion on him. The evidence utilized by the prosecution is circumstantial and can be disproved, and the lack of strong evidence proves Adnan’s
In any sort of legal situation, telling the truth and only the truth is extremely important. However, for Jay Wilds, the main witness in the murder of Hae Lee, it seems that the truth was the only thing he refused to tell. For example, in Jay’s story, he tells of a very memorable “trunk pop” location. This is where Jay claims that Adnan opened the trunk of Hae’s car, showing off Hae “pretzeled up.” In one interview, Jay claimed he saw the body in front of his grandmother’s house. However, Jay said in a different interview that he saw the body in front of Best Buy. These two statements are hugely contradictory. Seeing a corpse of a friend must be an event permanently engraved in one’s mind. Yet, for some reason, Jay blatantly changed the location the trunk pop happened. That is a fairly large red flag in the case, being that Jay should remember where he was when he saw the corpse of a friend.
A main point of interest and something that Jay was incredibly inconsistent with, was the location where Adnan supposedly showed Jay the body. In his first interview Jay told the police that Adnan showed him Hae’s body at Edmondson Avenue. However, second interview he said that he saw the body in the Best Buy parking lot. If you were in this position, would you forget the place you saw a dead body? Another detail he repeatedly changed was when Adnan told Jay that he was going to kill Hae. The day changes from the day of the murder to 3 or 4 days earlier. In fact, just about the only consistent event that occurs in all of Jays different retellings of the day Hae was murdered was the ‘come and get me’ call from

Of the 93% of women that were murdered by men that they knew, 63% were an intimate acquaintance (Wyman). Adnan Syed was convicted of murder and is currently serving a life sentence. Now, Adnan is receiving a retrial. Jay, an acquaintance of Adnan’s, testifies that Adnan is guilty allowing him to not receive a sentence. Jay’s knowledge of the location of Hae’s car is further supported by Adnan’s lack of recognition of events on the day Hae was murdered, which shows Adnan killed Hae
In episode 10 of serial, Koenig talks about Adnan's culture and ethnicity how it affected the jury. At first koenig says “The jurors we spoke to said Adnan’s religion didn’t affect their view of the case.” To be honest I was kind of surprised when I heard this. She then briefly talked about one of the jurors she spoke to who said it interested her at first until she realized Adnan was an american teenager doing normal teenage things. After this Koenig says what I expected her to say about the jury “But when we pressed them a little more, it seems stereotypes about Adnan’s culture were there lurking in the background.” Even in society today, most people still strongly judge people on looks, culture, ethnicity and religion. As much as we say
Hate serves as a powerful emotion that can control and manipulate individuals into performing actions they would never think possible. There are several reasons people can choose to hate one another. Sometimes individuals base that hate on stereotypes; sometimes they base that hate on ignorance, and sometimes they base that hate on mere blind faith because they are told to. Regardless of rationale, hate is a powerful emotion that can cause people to turn on one another and in turn to do drastic and terrible things. Erich Maria Remarque, in All Quiet on the Western Front, and Thomas Hardy, in the poem “The Man He Killed”, each explore the very nature of what causes humans to blindly destroy one another. Both Remarque and Hardy emphasize that
The verdict we reached was: Involuntary manslaughter- Not guilty, assisting suicide- not guilty, giving medicine to minors without a medical license- Guilty and failure to report a dead body- Guilty, on the second day of the trial we found him not guilty of assisting suicide and the court was adjourned, my reaction to the verdicts were how I though they should be, he was guilty of the things that were clear and not guilty of the ones that
