Right.  Like it slightly makes me upset that his protege might have the potential to become bigger than him commercially……but with the same sound.

It's the same but different if that makes any sense. Tommy himself produced the beat of Upset if I'm not mistaken, so I feel like Upset was our intro into his sound and MDB is his coming out party type of thing.

In no way is this man gonna be bigger than Brent. And if he does it'll just be giving a Frank Ocean/Tyler The Creator tea. Brent is literally at the forefront of Hip-Hop and RnB and he purposely I feel doesn't want insane mainstream success, because if he wanted it he could have it lmao!

Even if they do sound similar they aaallll worked on the song together and at the end of the day, this isn't much different than sampling. And that's literally one of the driving forces of Hip-Hop and RnB.

I said the potential to be bigger commercially.  Debuting that high is one hell of setup/platform for him to knock it out the ballpark (if he wants + if he chooses the right singles).  That's all I'm saying.  Brent has never debuted that high in his career ever.  These are just facts…

I mean I get it completely what you mean. But Brent's album before his last one I think literally debuted at #1 a few years back, and this song is just a #1 hit. Brent has the fanbase and the acclaim, and Tommy doesn't. Not even close to Brent.

This song does sound like a huge smash though, so to an extent I understand the worry of this song "setting him up" to be "bigger". But Brent is like Billie Eilish when it comes to RnB and hiphop. He's just THAT GIRL. It's too soon to call what Tommy will be tbh.
