Rising superstars Millie Bobby Brown and Sadie Sink are among the most popular and successful actresses of their generation, and their work together on Netflix’s Stranger Things isn’t where their relationship ends. The two have frequently talked about the importance of their off-screen friendship, which began when Sink joined the cast of the smash-hit series in its second season. Sink plays Max Mayfield, a young girl who moves to Hawkins following her complicated past. She quickly became a permanent fixture of the show, building a close friendship with Bobby Brown’s character Eleven.

Much of the appeal of Max and Eleven's friendship on Stranger Things was thanks to the genuine chemistry between Brown and Sink. Their off-screen friendship wove its way into the narrative of the show, with the characters getting to share more and more screen time together as the story progressed. The two actresses essentially spent their entire adolescence co-starring on Stranger Things, so it’s really no surprise that they bonded so easily — particularly as they were two the very few female members of the young cast.

Speaking to People about her bond with Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink admitted, "We really depend on each other when things get absolutely nuts, or when you need to talk to someone who understands exactly what you're going through. We have each other.” This was doubly important for Sink, as the only member of the main cast who wasn’t on board since Stranger Things season 1. She has since claimed that Brown was instantly very welcoming of her into the cast. “It was nice that we had that connection," Sink said. This allowed them to build a close friendship that they’ve maintained ever since.

Sink also revealed her friendship with Brown extends beyond the confines of the show. In an interview with Coveteur, the actress revealed, "We would have sleepovers all the time. We went to Cabo together on vacation. It was so nice! The pair have often appeared at press events together, riffing off each other's sense of humor to make them feel more comfortable and at ease. Brown has also spoken positively about their friendship on several occasions, admitting, "When I had to say goodbye to my best friend Sadie [after season 3], I just broke down."

Stranger Things had been running for six years before it reached season 4 in 2022, and the actors had spent the entirety of their teenage years working together. They’d all grown incredibly close, and as they became more and more comfortable with each other, their chemistry began to drip through into their on-screen counterparts. This was particularly clear with Max and Eleven, whose friendship quickly became one of Stranger Things’ most heartwarming narrative threads in the show’s third and fourth seasons. Much like the actresses' situation, Max and Eleven were brought together by their mutual interests and positions as the only young girls in a large group of boys.

Thanks to the palpable chemistry between the two actresses, Eleven and Max were also given a lot more screen time in Stranger Things season 4. The characters are much more comfortable in each other's company, and that's a clear parallel to their real-life friendship. They rely on each other for solace, and that's a trait that has been woven into their relationship on the show.
