      Midnight in the Switchgrass Reviews

Amid the sea of crime movie cliches and bland dialogue are a number of performances that are as unconvincing as the story itself.

... audiences are given one of the laziest, most drawn-out "climaxes" of the year.

Despite [Emile] Hirsch's interesting portrayal, not much distinguishes this from a "Dateline" episode.

This formulaic dud recycles every movie/TV cliché about cops looking for a serial killer who targets prostitutes ... There are zombies that have better personalities than almost all of the characters in this dull and dreary crime drama.

Everything from the direction to the plot to the tragically unsatisfactory finale is all blandly mediocre.

If there were still shops around where one could rent or buy videos or DVDs, this is the sort of movie you'd expect to see in the straight-to-retail bargain bin.

From the opening narration to the derivative finale, every aspect of Midnight in the Switchgrass is fundamentally flawed and broken to an alarming degree.

It's not terribly bad, but it's not really good either. Unless you are a serial killer film completist or a big fan of Lukas Haas, I can't really recommend this. The major feeling that I had while watching MIDNIGHT IN THE SWITCHGRASS was tedium.

A cover of Dire Straits' 'Brothers In Arms' bookends the film as if they were singing about Bruce Willis slipping away on the battlefield. But he is not there for either performance and barely shows up in-between either, so best to just walk away.

The scenes between Kelly and Fox are some of the more intriguing in an otherwise subpar spin...

The talent involved and the potential of the story can't save Midnight in the Switchgrass from poor editing and directing choices, and an embarrassing script.

Another week brings another movie that sees the once great Bruce Willis sleepwalk his way through 12 minutes of screen-time for a $1 million payday. This time around the film is Midnight In The Switchgrass.

Bruce Willis contributes little more than a cameo but Megan Fox does her best with the weak material.

Slightly more ambitious than anything Willis has attempted lately, this thriller is still pretty generic, taking the most predictable shortcuts and offering few surprises and little to care about.

It's a functional piece of exploitation - an efficient little crime-porn snuff-thriller potboiler. It's like a fast-food meal that makes you think, "Okay, that wasn't good for me, but I got what I paid for."

I found myself envying Bruce Willis, who didn't have to be around for any of this. Not even the scenes that he's in.

It's trying to be gritty and raw and real... but it lays it on so thick.

Its main problems are structural, opting for parallel stories of the criminals and those trying to find them. Any meaningful suspense is lost in the shuffle.

Although the film's narrative is passable at best, it struggles to maintain any momentum due to uninteresting characters and predictably bad writing.

Gator noir from down Florida Panhandle way gets the serious treatment from The Irishman producer-turned-director Randall Emmett... [A] creepy crime thriller.
