Know of any good dentists in San Diego?

I am looking for a dentist in the area and could use reddit's help. Mostly looking in central San Diego, within 10 miles of Kearny Mesa would be ideal. General dentistry, nothing fancy needed.

IDK if you are insured or not, but I have been going to TJ for the past 3 years or so. I do not have insurance and I pay about 1/3 of what I would here. The dentist is awesome, trained in America, and has his American dental license. I'm at work so I don't have his name, but if you are interested I can get you that info.

u/kenofthesea avatar

I'm interested. I've thought about going to TJ but didn't want to until I could find a reputable dentist/doctor.

The dentists name is DR Oscar Torres and the number is 866-804-1877. http://www.tijuanamexicodentist.com/ For $5 the taxi will take you. From the outside his office looks a little run down, but the inside is not. All his staff speak English and he is very helpful. Quality work great customer services skills. He takes American credit cards

There is also another dentist I saw. His name is Billy Bartel.
www.drwbartell.com/ This guy did great work, but his customer service skills sucked. My last appointment he kept taking calls while I was in the chair with my mouth blocked open. On time as long as 15 minutes. So the workmanship was great, but the customer service sucked. I know he takes credit but I used cash. Some of his staff spoke English, but most didn't.

There's is another clinic to STAY AWAY FROM. Sam Dental...... Just dont go IMHO.

Please let me know if I can give you any more information, I'm happy to help.

Sorry for all the spam, but there is one more important thing. I always park on the US side and walk over. Either way you go, expect to wait at least 2 hours to get back. You MUST have a passport. I have the SENTRI card so it takes me 15 minutes. But the trip back will take some time.

u/kenofthesea avatar

Yeah, that's how I do it when I go there. Just never had medical work done. Thanks!

Thanks for the info man. I absolutely hated my last dentist so I'm hoping this guy is as good as I have heard.

I've been super happy with Dr Gregg Johnson in Hillcrest/Bankers Hill. I've recommended him to 6 or 7 different people and they've all loved him too. I've never had him or his staff try to upsell me on any product or service and I really appreciate that.

Great family. His sister, Linda, is the office manager...one of the kindest and sweetest people I've ever met. I've known them for years and they're really great people.

this guy is a good dentist definitely recommend

http://www.josephtuckerdds.com/ He's in Clairemont off Genesee. I've had terrible experiences with dentists in SD for the majority of my childhood and he's the only one that's been non-traumatic, so to speak. Also his wife is his receptionist. I think that's adorable.

Yes! My dentist is within 10 miles of Kearny Mesa. I've never been so happy with how they treat me. I've enjoyed all my appointments. It's called Cabrillo Dental. The Dentist is Ehsan Nasery. Located at 7695 Cardinal Court suite 300

Good luck finding a dentist!

I've had horrible experiences with this dentist. On three separate visits I was charged for services I didn't have done (like four wisdom tooth extractions when I only had two wisdom teeth left to remove). Then I had to talk them into refunding my money instead of keeping it on file as a credit.

u/facthanshotfirst avatar

Agh that's horrible! :(. I haven't had any major work done just a few cavities. I'm sorry your experience was bad.

My parents have been going to Dr. Robert Cheung since they immigrated to America over 20 years ago, and I've been going to him since I was born. He's amazingly caring and super meticulous, never misses anything. He'll never recommend any services you don't need and thinks from the perspective of the patient. My parents used to be pretty poor so he would give them a significant discount, but even now when they've settled down with good jobs and a nice life he still gives them a discount. Overall the best doctor I've ever been to. It's a family practice too, so his office is pretty small and feels very homey (it's a house converted into a dentist's office). He is about 45 minutes away from where I live but is worth the commute just cause he is so good.

Hope this helps!! He's worth every penny!

I have been a patient of Dr. Cheung's wife, Dr. Esther Ong, for as long as I can remember. Same office. They're both wonderful. Can't recommend them enough, there's really no other office I would trust with my teeth.

I actually viewed this thread just to see if anyone else recommended them.

They are great, I used to go there when my sister in law worked there.

Oh yea right, that place is near the Ralphs shopping center. Yelp has all kinds of negative reviews on that place.

rio vista family dentistry is great. its in mission valley, ask for Dr. Bonafacio shes awesome.

Been going here for 6 years and have had a great experience: http://www.yelp.com/biz/davis-gregory-dds-san-diego

Service providers chosen by a union tend to go above and beyond because the unions bring them tons of business and they don't want to lose that. If the provider gets really shitty, the union can simply choose a different one and take a large chunk of the customer base with them.

I do not belong to a union but luckily they are covered by my insurance and I get the same wonderful treatment as any of the union members.

http://xceptionaldental.com Janette Larsen, she's awesome. Over off Nimitz

Dr. Baquial off of Morena & Balboa. Not too pricey, super honest, native San Diegan, all-around good guy.

A bit south in north park, off el cajon blvd, a block from the 7-11 on 30th & meade is my dentist since I was a teen (I'm 34) dr Randall Russ. He is amazingly proactive about prevention and everyone in his small, cozy office is super nice.

Doesn't accept a lot of insurance because he doesn't like to be told what to do, but he has fair prices since it's his practice; he decides. I truly love his work and ethic. And I credit my often complimented smile to him <3

Dr. Lee in Clairemont is amazing, super nice. I've had a root canal done there and multiple cavities, and nothing ever hurt. I've NEVER once been kept waiting for more than 5 minutes, and the receptionist is very friendly. http://www.yelp.com/biz/lee-min-dennis-dds-san-diego

I was going to recommend against Gentle Dental in Clairemont since it sucks ass, but it looks like it's already closed! Ha!

u/Flixdog avatar

Came here to recommend Dr Lee. Awesome practice, just him and Stacy the receptionist. Very honest, all around awesome.

Sorrento Valley Dental in Sorrento Valley area. Dr. Minh Hoang is one of the best, and has great discounts even for people without insurance.

I'm looking for a Sorrento valley dentist. Do you have this doctors contact or website info?

I go to Dr. Farid (Fred) Harandi located at the 805/Balboa intersection.

He's treated me quite well even when I had unstoppable blood coming out from my mouth.

The front desk person is his brother and he's great too.

Generally, there is little to no waiting upon arriving at the office. The office is clean.

I suggest peeking at Yelp for more ideas.

Dr. Carl Smith in La Jolla. Super nice and really good at what he does. The hygienists are also really nice, never had any discomfort during any procedures.

u/OUTKAST5150 avatar

Anyone got a good one in north county?

u/Scope77 avatar

Do NOT consider Ed Farajzadeh. Poor communication skills, and very rough. He never gave me options, did not discuss risks, benefits, goals , expected course, alternatives, nothing. I had to ask him for a few minutes so that we can talk about the diagnosis and his recommended treatment. I switched dental plans just so that I can switch dentists.

u/gothicel avatar

I would recommend Dr. Steven J. Schneider in Rancho Bernardo. Found him through a co-worker a few years ago and he's fantastic. Friendly, he knows what it is to not like pain, great staff. The guy made my pain go away so he's great for me.

Be prepared for the hard upsell at Stonecrest. They're great but it feels like I walk into one big advertisement when I go - from the decor (computer screens and wall "art" for example) to the doctors to the techs and the check-out folks.

u/cmlambert89 avatar

The one I used is always booked and my schedule doesn't really allow me to book in advance; I almost always cancel. Anyone know of a dentist that's open on the weekend?

Dr. Taylor does weekends exclusively. He's a retired dentist who goes fishing on the weekdays and emergency dentistry on the weekends. He offers a discount if you bring cash, but accepts cards too. I've been to him twice, both times on the verge of tears because of broken tooth pain. Both times, I was in his chair less than an hour after the phone call.

u/johns-appendix avatar

I'll wholeheartedly second Dr. Taylor. He took care of me on a Saturday and got me relief and antibiotics to get me ready for surgery first thing the following Monday.

Dr. Olga Karnakova with New Smile Dentistry. Awesome, friendly staff and they give around a 10% discount if you're uninsured. She saved me several thousand dollars by crowning what was left of a broken tooth, instead of vying for extraction and implant which two other dentists told me was the only option. The office is right over by Sharp Memorial hospital.

Dont mess with TJ dentists, good way to get Hep C.

Downtown Dental Arts, Jason Brown. He is legit, and right near Horton Plaza.
