Bears Beat Bison in Game Two of Cancun Challenge

Mercer will play again tomorrow against MTSU.

Box Score CANCUN, Mexico. –  The third season of the Greg Gary era earns its second win of the 2021-2022 season over Bucknell, 78-68, while Felipe Haase drops a double-double in game two of the Cancun Challenge. 

Mercer (2-3, 0-0 SoCon) made its great separation from Bucknell with a 8-0 run with :34 seconds left in the first half. The Bears then used a 13-3 run in a two-minute stretch of the second half to secure the win. Mercer once led by as many as 19 points and got a significant 3-pointer from Haase to make it 76-66 at the 1:37 mark. Neftali Alvarez had 22 points and five assists for Mercer; Jalen Johnson and Kamar Robertson each scored 14, and Felipe Haase added to the Bears with 13 point/10 rebound double-double. Mercer made 11 3-pointers and held the Bison to just 4-of-18 shooting from deep. The Bears will now face Middle Tennessee on Wednesday in the Mayan Title Game at 3 p.m. on FloHoops.
 
Bucknell (1-4, 0-0) was playing without two starters, as center Andre Screen couldn't travel with the Bison due to injury while Josh Adoh dressed for the Bison but was held out due to illness. The Timmerman-Rice-Funk combo recorded 58 of the Bison's 68 points. Junior center Timmerman made the most of his first career start as he scored 22 points along with eight rebounds, but the Orange & Black used a big run in both halves to earn the victory, 78-68. Bucknell (1-4) faces Rider in the consolation game, 12:30 p.m. ET, also on FloHoops.
