Supergirl has left the building, probably by up, up and awayyyy!ing out a skylight.
Production on the Arrowverse series wrapped this Fraturday, and lead Melissa Benoist commemorated the occasion with a post to Instagram.
“thank you for an incredible 6 years — the cast who became family, everyone who worked on the show, all of you who watched us week after week ♥️♥️♥️,” Kara’s portrayer wrote alongside a photo of her with co-stars Chyler Leigh and David Harewood (above). “that’s a wrap on @supergirlcw.”
Harewood, who plays J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter, similarly reflected on filming his final scenes, tweeting, “Oh boy that was tough. Held it together right up until the end but there’s no superpower that can stop raw emotion. A big thank you to all the fans, for all the tweets and letters, all mightily appreciated.”
The English actor also posted to Instagram a different angle on the photo of him, Benoist and Leigh, celebrating “6 incredible years with these two incredible people. What a joy to go to work with them.
“Thank you all for an amazing ride,” he added. “I’ve loved playing the Martian Manhunter for you. Who knows, maybe I’ll get to suit up again someday.”
Supergirl‘s 20-episode farewell run was announced back in September 2020. At that time, Benoist shared, “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.
“She’s had that impact on me, too,” Benoist continued. “She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”
Regarding the show’s final episodes, Benoist back then teased, “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
Supergirl‘s sixth and final season resumes Tuesday, Aug. 24, with the series’ final 13 episodes; watch a teaser below. And as always, you can email our InsideLine@tvline.com column with your scoop-seeking questions!
For me Supergirl was good in the first few seasons then it got too political.
How so?
Season 4 was very much political on purpose. It was focused on anti-alien extremism and gun violence. There was literally a terrorist group. There’s no getting around that. You either liked the episodes or you didn’t.
Really? Really????????????
How was it political? I don’t recall any politics other than the stuff with Wonder Woman, I mean President Marsdin and the rights of aliens as refugees on Earth. I’m sure that you don’t man the presence of gay and trans characters in the main cast because that’s not politics. That’s just a better reflection of the real world where everyone is treated with dignity.
I think you could also say that any real world superhero would care about the subjects covered on the show. Heroes have always been big on equality and inclusiveness. They’re not going to like hearing about good people being treated differently through no fault of their own.
Making Alex gay or bi,the whole sl of season four was anti alien( anti illegal aliens/immigrant irl)&tge anti gun episode
A person’s, or character’s, sexuality is not a political statement. Though, I agree with the rest being political.
all human life (interaction) is political
There was an episode where they hilariously decided the DEO shouldn’t use guns anymore, because showing gun violence on TV is bad and contributing to gun culture in America. There was an episode where a cop pulls a gun on Guardian because he’s black, even though Guardian was just beating up the person known to the cop as the villain, and the cop had a full view of him being a hero beforehand. There’s not letting Dreamer just *be* trans or Alex just *be* gay and show them living their lives but the need to give them long speeches about it that other characters pay rapt attention to and respond to by saying things like “thanks for speaking your truth.” There’s the line they added to the opening of the show about Kara being an immigrant in this country and the entire season they devoted to trying to make an aliens=immigrants story that lacked any kind of real exploration of the immigrant experience and just wanted to focus on the discrimination angle. I could go on, and on, and on. And to be clear, none of these are inherently bad ideas or bad things to write stories about using Supergirl (well except the DEO guns thing, there’s no defending the stupidity of that), it’s ALL down to the execution, which was, without exception, shallow, hamfisted, and preachy. That’s not smart entertainment that engages in issues in a way that makes you think and question your beliefs and behavior like it wants to be; in fact, it frequently fell so short of that mark that instead it failed to be entertainment at all because of it.
That pretty much sums it up
Brilliantly stated, Matt. Personally, I can’t stand it when writers inject their ham-fisted politics into scripts. Taking away the guns of the DEO, putting them all into terrible danger, absolutely disgusted me.
As someone who just watched all seasons over a couple of months, the Agent Liberty storyline was political and completely draining for me. People like those followers exist IRL so to me, it wasn’t entertaining to see that plot play out. It was too close to home and too close to something I already take very seriously. I don’t support anyone who minimizes the rights of others and I don’t need it in my fluffy superhero show.
The presence of gay and trans characters was something I fully support and is not political imo.
I agree. The show can be unsubtle in its approach to politics but having gay and trans characters is not a political statement. And I don’t think Alex made any speeches about her sexuality after her coming out story was over.
… ‘world where everyone is treated with dignity.”
WELL SAID esp. ‘dignity’
Agreed and everything doesn’t have to be about being gay
all human life (interaction) is political
They had a really good run and were able to tell some great stories. Kudos to everyone involved and good luck for the future
Thank you to the cast and crew for six wonderful years! Nice to go out on top! Good luck with your future endeavors.
I hope the entire cast of Supergirl the best of luck on future projects and maybe return once in a while on Superman and Lois and Batwoman
I have a feeling Supergirl is going to go to the future at the end of the series to join up with Mon-El and Winn, so that there’s a reason she doesn’t pop up on occasion. I think she’s done with the character. Just an impression I get. Not that I think she’s not proud of the work and happy to have been Supergirl. But, I just get the feeling she’s going to want to move on. I hope she doesn’t. I love when Supergirl and Flash get some screen time together. Their cross-overs were always my favorite. I also enjoy seeing her with Clark. So, I hope she’s back for a visit on occasion. I’m just not going to hold my breath for it to happen.
I’d like to see her head to the future and join the Legion. I think they should leave if she winds up with Mon-el a mystery. He should not be the reason she decides to join the Legion if they go that route. I think some see them as end game and others see the relationship as toxic. It should be left ambiguous . Maybe they get together, maybe they don’t. But I really want her to join the Legion.
Me, too. I also really want her to see Winn again. He is one of my favorite characters.
I don’t think so. She already knows where her home is and it’s in the present with Alex and her friends. I don’t see her leaving Alex behind again like she was thinking of doing on Argo.
Could have lasted longer if they didn’t go all in on politics. Batwoman unfortunately didn’t take a hint from the Supergirl ratings nosedive and is doing the same thing.
Very sad to see the show end.I’m glad the show is ending under it’s own power though and I’m thrilled with some of the spoilers out there from the location shooting of the final episode. But it does feel like a missing element IMO if we don’t have one final interaction between Kara & Barry and Kara & Clark.Hell I want one for Kara & Kate too given that the Batwoman season finale had Kate saying she was going to visit her friend in National City.COVID-19 screwed up any even minor crossover due to the understandable protocols in place.Supergirl has ended just when things are relaxed enough to allow this five episode crossover like event to kick off The Flash Season 8.While I think there is a good shot of Black Lightning making a post series apperance here given Cress Williams post mortem series finale interview,I’m not confident right this second in Melissa appearing in the Flash five episode event for a meet up with Barry. The Flash still has two weeks to go before it starts filming season 8.I don’t see Melissa sticking around a few extra weeks to appear and I don’t see her leaving Vancouver and then coming back to appear in one of the five episodes either.Right now I’m don’t have much hope on a future guest appearance on Superman & Lois as well.
I will miss the show, but 6 seasons is a solid run. The Flash is unwatchable and so is Legends. I’d like it to end before it drops to unwatchable status. Stargirl and S&L had very good first seasons and will carry on the Arrowverse legacy. The rest need to wrap things up.
Hi I would like to see Supergirl in person I love the Hundredth of Supergirl too I want to say to Brainy and John Jones and Nia and Eliza and Mon El too
I’m just disappointed we never saw Supergirl with Superman on either show this season.
Also the inconsistencies. The fortress of solitude was completely different in the two shows.
Kinda sad, have watched every episode, from CBS to the CW, but I agree time to end. The show has gotten “very outer space,” if that makes sense. Love Benoist, beautiful and talented.
Any chance they will get her on superman and lois at least once???
I enjoyed “Supergirl” for its first few seasons, but it has become an annoying chore to watch these last couple of years, becoming too “woke” with weak stories and too many lost characters. I’m relieved that it is finally ending. I just hope Cat Grant and Mon-El come back before the series ends. Though a finale that disappoints is sadly expected at this point, given the show’s history these past few years. Time will tell. RIP “Supergirl”
thanks CW
