Villainy is a way of life, but if a villain doesn't have a hero to battle, can he still expect the same sense of satisfaction from his evil deeds? When Megamind (Will Ferrell) finally defeats his long-time nemesis Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he ecstatically goes about laying ruin to Metro City, reveling in the fact that he can now have anything he wants. Surprisingly, Megamind's glee quickly turns to dissatisfaction as he realizes that the battle was half the fun and everything comes too easy now. Thus begins a plot to turn the nerdy Hal (Jonah Hill) into Tighten, a new hero for Megamind to battle. What Megamind doesn't count on is that Tighten may not turn out to be as good as he's meant to be. Nor does he anticipate falling in love with his old rival's girl Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey). In the end, Megamind finds he must rethink his assumptions about good, bad, and what makes him happy. Megamind and Despicable Me are remarkably similar movies: both deal with villains who are unfulfilled by their evil ways and who, despite their despicable natures, have some essential goodness deep down inside. Both villains are presented in highly stylized animation and the 3-D effects in each film are skillful and effective without being overdone. Megamind has Minion, who watches over him, while Gru has a whole crew of mindless minions supporting his evil ventures. Finally, both films are solidly entertaining. Because the two films were released within a few months of one another, speculation about who copied who will no doubt run rampant, but the bottom line is that both films are well worth seeing. I love this movie. The characters are well-created and extremely well-presented. I truly believe there is something for everyone in this film. It has deep emotion, something a lot of comedies fail to have. I think a movie is truly art when it can be extremely funny, but also have character depth and a good plot. You can see why characters are this way, how they think and act, and why they do the things they do. The world is excellently created to. Watch it.

Was haben Hamlet, Pac-Man und "Superman - Der Film" gemeinsam? Auf alle drei wird in "Megamind" angespielt. Der Film, der streckenweise wie eine Mischung aus "Ich, einfach unverbesserlich" und "Die Unglaublichen" wirkt, bietet 95 Minuten lang vergnügliche Unterhaltung; die gut ausgestattete Blu-ray Disc sorgt dafür, dass auch bekennende Bonusmaterialisten auf ihre Kosten kommen.

Bereits der Auftakt von "Megamind" dürfte erfahrene Kinogänger schmunzeln lassen, lehnt er sich doch inhaltlich deutlich erkennbar an "Superman - Der Film" an. Genau wie Supermans Geburtsort Krypton blüht auch Megaminds Heimatplanet der Untergang, und deshalb verfrachten die Eltern den acht Tage alten Sprössling kurzerhand in eine Rettungskapsel, die erdwärts geschossen wird. Schon auf dem Weg dorthin kreuzt ein zweiter kleiner Kerl die Bahn, dem Megamind in der Zukunft immer wieder begegnen wird: Aus Baby Nummer Zwo wird später einmal "Metro Man" werden, seines Zeichens Beschützer der Großstadt Metro City und Megaminds erklärter Erzfeind.

Wie es der Zufall will, verschlägt es die beiden sogar in die gleiche Schule, und schon hier ergeben sich Differenzen. Da ist zum einen der wohlgelittene, strahlende Metro Man, dem alles gelingt, zum anderen der glücklose Megamind, den niemand wirklich leiden kann - eigentlich ist Megamind eher Wicht als böse, aber irgendwer muss den Schurken-Part ja schließlich übernehmen. Zu der Rolle, die Megamind als Erwachsener übernimmt, gehört zum Beispiel Kidnapping der unerschrockenen Reporterin Roxy. Das geschieht offenbar allwöchentlich, hat deswegen schon Tradition und ist ein Ritual, das Roxy längst schon nur noch ein müdes Gähnen entlockt. Dann aber erfährt die alte Geschichte unerwartet eine neue Wendung. Als Metro Man zur Rettung heranfliegt, enthüllt der strahlende Held ganz unerwartet eine Schwachstelle: Offenbar reagiert Metro Man auf Kupfer ähnlich wie Kollege Superman auf Kryptonit - sprich: In Anwesenheit des Metalls schwinden mit einem Mal alle Superkräfte, und als Megamind in die Falle, in die er Metro Man gelockt hat, mit viel Getöse in die Luft jagt, scheint das Undenkbare Wirklichkeit zu werden. Offenbar hat Megamind seinem Widersacher den Garaus gemacht!

Und nun? Ist Metro City den Machenschaften von Megamind schutzlos ausgeliefert. Was aber insofern nicht allzu tragisch ist, da Megamind verwirrt feststellt, dass das Leben als Bösewicht plötzlich gar keinen Sinn mehr ergibt, wenn erst der gute Gegenpart fehlt. Das zu Ehren von Metro Man erbaute Museum sprengt Megamind zwar noch eben in die Luft, aber das eigentlich auch nur, weil für den blauen Bösewicht die Erinnerung an den Helden gar zu schmerzvoll ist. Bei der Gelegenheit muss Megamind dann tatsächlich auch noch den Retter für Roxy spielen, die es ebenfalls an den Ort der Erinnerung gezogen hat, und dabei verschießt sich der Schurke auch noch in die Reporterin. Die ist ebenfalls nicht abgeneigt, zumal Megamind ihr nicht in seiner tatsächlichen Gestalt erscheint, sondern mit dank eigener Erfindung gewandeltem Äußeren. Wirklich vertrackt wird die Geschichte aber in dem Moment, in dem Megamind ausgerechnet einen glücklosen Verehrer von Roxy zum neuen Superhelden aufbauen will (irgendwer muss schließlich auch den Part übernehmen) und der neue Held sich in der Folge als skrupelloser Egoist erweist, der die ihm verliehenen Kräfte nicht zum Guten verwendet, sondern ganz und gar eigennützige Ziele verfolgt ...

Filmkritik

Nein, "Megamind" erfindet das Rad nicht neu; weder erzähl- noch tricktechnisch wird wirklich Neuland beschritten. Megaminds Handlanger, ein Fisch im Roboteranzug, hört sogar auf den gleichen Namen ("Minion") wie die kleinen gelben Helferlein aus "Ich - einfach unverbesserlich". Spaß macht "Megamind" aber trotzdem, dafür sorgen schon die vielen netten Gags am Rande. Cineastisch Bewanderte werden in dem abenteuerlich toupierten, seltsam nuschelnden Helden-Mentor unschwer die Marlon Brando-Parodie entdecken, und auch Megaminds rechte Hand bzw. Flosse ist eine Figur, die immer wieder für Schmunzler sorgt. Was dem Film in meinen Augen an erzählerischer Raffinesse fehlt, macht er nicht nur durch sympathische Figuren, sondern auch durch seine detailverliebte Gestaltung wett. Das zu Ehren von Metro Man errichtete Museum zum Beispiel nimmt mit einer wahrlich atemberaubenden Architektur für sich ein (und außerdem mit anspielungsreichen Exponaten), und allein schon wegen der allzu schnell vorbeiflitzenden Werbetafeln und Graffiti, die ich wahrscheinlich erst bei einem Druck auf die "Pause"-Taste werde entziffern können, werde ich "Megamind" mindestens ein zweites Mal sehen müssen. Was mir aufgefallen ist: Genau wie im Falle von "Kung Fu Panda 2", den ich kürzlich gesehen habe, tauchen auch im Abspann von "Megamind" wieder die Namen von Komponist Hans Zimmer und von Regisseur Guillermo del Toro auf, den man inzwischen offensichtlich gern als Kreativberater hinzuzieht.

Die Blu-ray Disc

Hier hat die Blu-ray Disc gegenüber der herkömmlichen DVD mal wieder die Nase vorn, denn den ca. 15 Minuten langen Kurzfilm, der die Geschichte des Hauptfilms um eine nette, versponnene Episode erweitert, bietet allem Anschein nach nur die Blu-ray Disc - "Der Knopf des Verderbens" kann mithin für Unentschlossene, die zwischen DVD und Blu-ray Disc schwanken, das Zünglein an der sprichwörtlichen Waage sein. Bild und Ton der Blu-ray Disc sind erwartungsgemäß sehr gut, spielen für mich jedoch nicht in der Referenzklasse. Das Menü der Disc finde ich persönlich so gewöhnungsbedürftig wie das vieler vergleichbarer Veröffentlichungen, und auch die Benennung der einzelnen Punkte hätte für meinen Geschmack ruhig etwas aussagekräftiger ausfallen dürfen - dass sich z. B. hinter einem Begriff wie "Animatoren-Ecke" kein Making of verbirgt, sondern einer von drei Audiokommentaren, hätte man ruhig ausdrücklich sagen können. Der Rest der Zusatzausstattung, die ich mir noch nicht in Gänze zu Gemüte geführt habe, bietet offenkundig auch wieder jede Menge Werbegeklingel, das man zudem nicht unter einem Menüpunkt zusammengefasst, sondern das, wie so oft, in Form kleiner Splitter serviert wird - wer sich gern durch Menüs hangelt, deren Laden mit erheblicher Wartezeit einhergeht, wird das toll finden, wirklich an Hintergründen interessierte Filmfans müssen allerdings einiges an Geduld aufbringen, um hier die Spreu vom Weizen zu trennen.

R e s ü m e e

Dreamworks hat, so mein Eindruck, mit "Megamind" eine nette Fingerübung abgeliefert, mit der das Studio möglicherweise vornehmlich die Chancen auszuloten versucht hat, die der 3D-Film bietet - die zahlreich vorhandenen Flugszenen dürften in stereoskopischer Darstellung noch um einiges rasanter wirken, als sie es in herkömmlichem 2D bereits tun. Der ganz große Wurf ist "Megamind" in meinen Augen zwar nicht, aber als Teil eines Triple Features mit "Ich - einfach unverbesserlich" und "Die Unglaublichen" macht "Megamind" allemal eine gute Figur.

Streckenweise wirkt "Megamind" wie eine Melange aus den beiden anderen, und ein bisschen fehlt es mir deshalb an eigenem Profil, aber unterm Strich habe ich mich gut genug unterhalten gefühlt, um dem Film 4 Sterne zuzuerkennen. Die umfangreiche Zusatzausstattung der Blu-ray Disc, die munter Entbehrliches und wirklich Interessantes zu einer Mischung verquirlt, bei der Groß und Klein auf ihre Kosten kommen, ist mir einen zusätzlichen Stern wert.

Ce film est une vrai perle et je me demande encore pourquoi il a fait un tel flop et reçu de si mauvaises critiques. À vrai dire, on avait déjà eu le cas avec Happy feet...
Si vous avez connu les séries animées de super héros (je pense en particulier à la série Batman de la Warner), vous apprécierez les références ironiques qui ponctuent ce film. Si vous en êtes resté aux Tom & Jerry ou autres Fous du volant, vous apprécierez (en tous cas ça m'a fait un bien fou) qu'on prenne à contrepied le manichéisme habituel de ces animés en montrant un "super-héros" (copie de superman) aussi imparfait et criticable que n'importe qui.

Les personnages sont attachants, drôles, et de nombreux ressorts scénaristiques sont inattendus. Jusqu'aux dernières séquences, vous pourrez être surpris, attendri ou amusé. Un film auquel il faut donner sa chance, d'autant plus si vous avez trouvé que certains grands succès du box office (Shrek, Madagascar, ...) manquaient de profondeur.
