I tried to get my mind off how I was feeling, but I just felt stuck. And I began to realize, despite all my powers, each and every citizen of Metro had something I didn’t. A choice. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had to be what this city wanted me to be. But what about what I wanted to do? Then it suddenly hit me. I do have a choice! I can be whatever I wanna be!
―Metro Man to Megamind and Roxanne.

Metro Man is a major character in the DreamWorks film, Megamind. He is a superhero that has super strength, flight, laser vision powers, invulnerability, and great hair.

Background[]

Personality[]

Metro Man at first appears to be the ideal man. Charismatic, friendly, noble, witty and has a strong sense of justice. However, as shown during childhood that he and the other children treated Megamind badly, Metro Man's actions at this time are what caused Megamind to think all he could be was a villain.

During adulthood, he eventually came to the realization of what he had done. Of the pointlessness of constantly fighting Megamind, he was the only reason Megamind fought in the first place.

Appearances[]

Megamind[]

After Megamind, Minion, and Metro Man's home planets were pulled into a black hole, they were the only survivors of the two worlds. They were both launched off-planet in rockets, and collided, and Megamind told that was the day his rivalry with "Mr. Goodie-Two-Shoes" began. Metro Man landed in a house, in which the couple living there adopted him. Megamind crashed in the Metro City Prison and was raised by prisoners.

As children, he and Megamind met again in a small school "for 'lil gifted kids". There Metro Man and the other children mistreated Megamind and Minion, and Metro Man gained more and more attention. Megamind decided that he was destined to be the bad guy and smoke-bombed the school, and Metro Man pulled it out of the ground and flew off with the building as Megamind was brought back to the prison. After a few years and battles with Megamind, Metro Man became the defender of Metro City.

In the unveiling of Metro Man Museum, Megamind kidnapped Roxanne Ritchi. Roxanne, not fearful because she had been captured by the villain so many times and knew all his tricks, claimed that they were at the city's abandoned observatory. Metro Man flew to the observatory, only to be trapped, as Megamind built an imitation of the observatory in his hideout. He traps the superhero in the real observatory, made of copper, which appears to drain Metro Man's power, and after a delay, destroys the observatory with a death ray. He is presumed killed as his cape flies into Megamind's hideout with a skeleton wearing it.

Then he is again seen in the middle of the film, which he reveals to Megamind and Roxanne that he was tired of his life as a superhero, wanting to move on and start a new career. But knowing he can't simply quit, he decided to fake his death, and then hide away in an unfamiliar area of town, in a big Mancave under the old school he and Megamind both used to attend. He then got to start a new career playing guitar as "Music Man". After telling Megamind and Roxanne that he's done being a superhero, "Music Man" inspires Megamind to take his place, then bids them farewell.

In the end, in the audience of the inauguration of the new museum - Museum Megamind, It's seen that Metro Man is watching with the other citizens, proud at how far Megamind has come.

Trivia[]

  • Metro Man's voice actor Brad Pitt also voiced Sinbad in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas.
  • He, like Megamind, has an origin like that of DC Comics superhero Superman, and is an intentional parody to said Superhero.
  • He also has a physical resemblance to Uncle Art the Pizza Man from Disney's 2007 film Meet the Robinsons, and Disney villian Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
  • His talents are similar to Disney and Pixar hero Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise.
    • Coincidentally, in the Swedish dub, both were voiced by Fredrik Dolk.
  • Metro Man was going to be Roxanne's love interest, much like how Roxanne is a parody of Lois Lane, but the filmmakers decided to go to with Megamind.
  • Originally Bruce Campbell was intended to voice him before Brad Pitt got the role.
  • Even before his revelation, there are few hints earlier in the movie that foreshadow his quiet retirement as a superhero in front of the public by faking his death:
    • During his charismatic speech in front of Metro City's citizens, one of his lines is "Who would I be without you?", with a genuine despaired tone. This indicates that his life as a superhero had later became tiresome to him.
    • During his final fight with his former archenemy Megamind, while he was inside the dome being recorded, a brief flickered view of him suddenly occurred. This gives a hint that he was given time to use his super speed to reflect his life as a superhero while the death ray was still warming up.
    • When he told that his supposed weakness was copper earlier in the movie, that happened later on instead of being immediate. This gives a clue that he doesn't get weakened by that material.
    • At the moment when Megamind finally "defeats" Metro Man with the former's death ray, a skeleton appeared to prove that he was finally beaten by the former. Realistically speaking, if Metro Man was to be fully vaporized by that same death ray, so would his skeleton as well.
    • When Megamind drops a dome of pure copper on Tighten, Tighten manages to climb out of the dome, meaning that the copper did not weaken him. Since Tighten has the same abilities as Metro Man. This proves that the copper could not weaken Metro Man, which means something was wrong with his death.
    • Just before discovering that Metro Man is alive, Roxanne brings Megamind to his lair (the school building where Megamind and Metro Man once attended). There, Megamind and Roxanne discover old things that belonged to Metro Man. His lair was in perfect order and there was not even dust on his things. Roxanne notices that the ice in the glass has not melted (realistic ice would melt for less than an hour after being placed in the drink).
