Archduke Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria (1833 – 1896) was the younger brother of Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830–1916) the father of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (1863–1914), whose assassination ignited the start of World War I. He was born at Schönbrunn in Vienna, the son of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria (1802–1878) his wife Sophie of Bavaria (1805–1872). His siblings included Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and Maximilian (1832–1867), the executed Emperor of Mexico.

Archduke Joseph Auguste of Habsburg was born in Hungary, the son of Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria and Princess Clothilde of Saxe Coburg Gotha. Archduke Joseph married Princess Augusta of Bavaria (1875-1964), a granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria. The young couple had a long and happy marriage. Four of their six children lived to adulthood and they have many descendants.

She was raised by her Grandfather Emperor Franz Josef when in 1889 her father Rudolf & his mistress Mary Vetsera were found dead in a murder-suicide pact at the Imperial hunting lodge in Austria.
