**** King Sebastian was killed at Alcácer Quibir (Battle of the Three Kings). He died unmarried, and the kingship devolved on King-Cardinal Henrique, King pf Portugal (1512- 1580) Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Henrique succeeded his grandnephew, King Sebastian, as Cardinal Henry, King of Portugal.
King-Cardinal Henrique did not have issue. Then the Kingship of Portugal fell to Habsburg monarchs for 3 generations. The Habsburg claim originated from a daughter of King Manuel I, Isabella, marrying the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. This marriage produced King Philip II of Spain, who then took Portugal by force ****
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
**** After 3 generations of Habsburg rule, the Portuguese nonility rose up against them. The House of Braganza became the reigning house of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves in 1640, when João II, Duke of Braganza, was acclaimed as King João IV by the Portuguese nobility. Subsequently then was waged the Portuguese Restoration War, which was lost by the Habsburgs. Then the House of Braganza took the Kingship without further war. The Dukes of Braganza descended patrilineally from Afonso, the illegitimate son of King John I. ****
