EDITOR'S letter As 2012 draws to a close and 2013 dawns upon us, it’s a time for us all to reflect upon our trials and tribulations, our good times and our bad times and of course, our successes and mistakes of the past year. It’s been an adventurous one for all of us here at La Vida HQ yet a year that we wouldn’t change for the world. We’ve started our quest into the publishing world, looking and absorbing Manchester in a new light. We’ve all met our fair share of interesting people, learnt new ‘tricks-of-the-trade’ and experienced things we would never have thought. 2012 has been a chaotic year with our first issue released in October and our second, well, in your hands, but it has undoubtedly been worth it. We’ve spent many long hours piecing the issues together and many late nights enjoying our accomplishments, we just hope that this issue brings to you what it has brought to us; a love for Manchester, an understanding of fashion and an appreciation for the finer things in life. This issue, our Winter Wonderland Issue combines the winter months of December and January, giving you all the necessary information to end your year on a high note and start the new one with a healthy mind, healthy body, revised wardrobe and of course, a guide to the finest places to celebrate within our great city of Manchester.

With a plethora of musical talents for you to indulge in this issue and a unique opportunity to meet the faces behind Manchester’s leading radio station, Capital FM, as well as interviews with other names within the media industry, both here in Manchester and across the waters, this issue in our eyes offers a little something for everyone. It’s only natural that the jolly festivities have rubbed off on us with our useful ‘Gifts for Him and Gifts for Her’ section as well as our winter trend reports for both the ladies and the gents. Although these past few months have been painfully cold, it wouldn’t be Manchester otherwise. We just hope you too have enjoyed the merry season as much as we have with Manchester’s Christmas markets, Spinningfields ice rink and the festive Christmas lights. Until next year and our next issue, put your feet up, relax, eat as much food as possible and enjoy some quality time with friends and family this holiday season, we know we will. Amy Andrea Childs is best known for her leading role in the first two series of the BAFTA award winning show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’. After leaving ‘TOWIE’ in 2011, Amy took part in Channels 5’s debut edition of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ finishing 4th place in the reality TV game show. Named 'Personality of the Year' at the 'National Reality TV Awards' in July 2011, as well as bringing the word ‘vajazzle’ to public attention, Amy has now carved out quite the career for herself. Signed to 'Can Associates Management Agency', the very same people who represented her heroine Katie Price, she has created a remarkable brand and image for herself, most notably creating a perfume and showcasing her own reality television show, ‘It’s All About Amy’. Today, we witness Amy’s business acumen with the launch of 'The Amy Childs Fashion Collection'.

Welcometo Studio54 Labelled the most famous nightclub of all time, New York’s Studio 54 club was a revolutionary multi-media visual extravaganza. Open from the late seventies till the early nineties, it has left its mark on popular culture, inspiring many with the memories of the crazy parties held there - just like the infamous New Year’s Eve party where four tons of glitter carpeted the ground, almost five inches deep. Set in Manchester’s recently refurbished Genting Casino Club, our shoot captures the extravagance of the ever-present influences of Studio 54, interpreted in the more understated overindulgence of 2012.

The infamous characters of Harvey Specter in USA-Network’s Suits and Neil Caffery in USA-Network’s White Collar, dress just as one expects modern day men in power to dress. The two well-groomed and well-dressed men are the epitome of high-life living. With the widespread and cutaway collar dress shirts, thicker tie-knots, double vented suit jackets and very well tailored ‘power suits’, they truly set the standard for the modern day working gentleman. Character Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, is deemed one of the finest corporate lawyers at the New York law firm Pearson Hardman. Charming, confident and renowned for his remarkable corporate success, he is also highly admired by viewers for his impeccable fashion sense. Streamlined suits, tailored precisely to the proportions of his body and lightreflecting fabrics emanate precision, success and his no-nonsense attitude. Whilst the events of the intriguing and highly rated show unfold, the viewer is exposed to Harvey’s success within the esteemed law firm. Promoted to senior partner, Harvey’s famous attention to detail is showcased throughout the hit series professionally but also towards his appearance. Far from complacently wearing an expensive suit without reason, his understanding of the parallels between physical presentability and professional desirability is displayed when asked;

“…why does it matter how much I spend on a suit?” With a quick response Harvey answers,

“People respond to how we’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.” A highly philosophical statement from such a charismatic character, yet oh-sotrue. The ‘Harvey Specter Power Suit look' usually includes a 3-piece custom tailored pinstripe suit (including vest) with a variety of features comprising of flapped pockets, a ticket pocket and double-vents. As Charles Swindoll once said; 'the difference between something good and something great is attention to detail' so lets not forget those finishing touches. From the likes of a pocket square and cufflinks to a custom tailored shirt with spread collars and French cuffs, the Harvey Specter look is quite the attention grabber. Of course, we cannot forget his infamous bold ties with the classic Windsor knots; every character, or even well dressed gent, has a trademark and this is Harvey’s. In the real world though, it is safe to say that Harvey’s suit wardrobe combines conservative and modern elements from designers such as Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren as well as houses like Kiton, Rake, Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali and Pal Zileri, all of whom give their power suits a contemporary and unique aesthetic.

Neil Caffrey

Played by Matt Bomer

From one USA-Network hit to another and from ones bold ties to ones fedoras, we see White Collar’s Neal Caffrey as our next ‘Power Suit’. Fitted suits, tie bars and fedoras are a few staples usually associated with White Collar’s Neal Caffrey, played by actor Matt Bomer. This bad-turned-good con artist is a fashion slicker in his own right with his luxurious suits, efficient tie bars and trademark black fedora; an urban edge to such a classic look, but it works. If you are wondering as to why this apt thespian is one of the forth runners for the starring role of Christian Grey in the prominent upcoming movie 'Fifty Shades of Grey', then wonder no more. Neal Caffrey takes pride in his clean-shaven and immaculately well-groomed self and it would see, thankfully for Matt Bomer, as if Neal Caffrey himself is the perfect Christian Grey. As a character moderately inspired by Cary Grant’s role in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1995 film 'To Catch a Thief', both Matt and Neal hold a combination of immense swagger and unbeatable style. The series shows the life of ex-con artist Neal Caffrey who is released from his 4-year sentence for fraud and robbery to serve as an FBI consultant. Throughout the 7 series Caffrey is seen roaming the streets of New York in timeless and ever so elegant wardrobe pieces, along with his ankle monitor. These fine suits reflect the true character and personality of this suave and debonair smooth criminal; an art enthusiast, wine coinsure and born genius.

Neal Caffrey's wardrobe is a surplus of guilty pleasures and well-cut 40s-chic-modern-edge suits from designers John Varvatos, Prada, Gucci and Paul Smith. These bespoke suits maintain their modern twist whilst not taking away from the old and timeless pieces divulged throughout the series such as his vintage Sy Devore suit seen in the very first episode. The final touches emphasize Caffrey’s character of a smooth criminal who pays an awful lot of attention to detail. His vintage tie bars and mostly vintage ties add a certain panache to his style along with his prominent pocket square. Neal’s calling card so to say, to his already polished outfit, would be his trusty fedora hat, his modus operandi and tribute to the retro ‘rat pack’ linen hat along with his classic Ray-Bans. From the fedora to the footwear and the sterling tie bars to the bold ties, these two dynamic men are anything but fashion followers, they are fashion pioneers. Both dress as a modern day man should, each with their own flair and twist attached making their suits their own. The Flannels Creates event was an auction held in support of The Christie, a Manchester-based medical center specialising in cancer treatment. Guests were invited to bid on a range of beautifully unique designer mannequins created for the occasion by Raoul, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Matthew Williamson and Paul Smith, amongst others. These luxury mannequins, designed to represent the styles of each fashion house, were sold with the intention of achieving the £50,000 target to donate to The Christie. Greeted with champagne and canapés, guests enjoyed live music from The Jessie Rose Trip. The night kicked off with an exhibition of the latest Autumn/Winter looks from Matthew Williamson, McQ Alexander McQueen, Moncler, Nigel Cabourn, Sunspel, Dries Van Noten, Les Hommes and Tom Ford, adorned by a selection of models from Boss Model Management. The auction followed, with 15 mannequins sold, the remaining 25 saved to be entered into the online auction, ended 10th December.

T

here is always an excitement when a brand new eatery hits town; new menu, new bar, a new spot. More often than not, when it’s Italian cuisine, it’s something that has to be sampled first hand so the La Vida Magazine team stepped out to attend the launch of the latest addition. New to Manchester city centre, Italian restaurant Avalanche opened its doors for the first time to its invitation-only guest list on the evening of November 22nd. Located on the corner spot of Booth Street near Albert Square, the newly established ‘Italian Quarter’ sat in place of the very building that was once the venue of Lime Bar. The restaurant’s sleek décor immediately stood out thanks to its bright white walls, glistening chandeliers and electric blue lighting. The black carpet was rolled out and the lights were flashing for the James Bond themed event in celebration of the phenomenon’s 50th anniversary as an electro violinist welcomed in attendees. The parking bays outside were occupied by several luxurious sports cars that complemented the sophisticated dress code for the evening and the array of celebrities, press and Manchester’s movers and shakers were all in attendance. Considering it was a cold and wet Manchester evening, there certainly was an atmosphere of sparkle and sophistication present at the venue. Gentlemen were suited and booted whilst the ladies stole the show in gowns and trouser suits.

The restaurant is quite the impressive space with a spacious bar area, a stage for entertainment and needless to say, a stylish interior. As well as the dripping chandeliers, the most outstanding piece was the black and white painting that hung on the back wall with what appeard to be Red Riding Hood on a Venetian boat. Her crimson cape was the only touch of colour on the wall, which sat beautifuly behind the opulent black and white furnishings Upon entry, guests were greeted with a glass of Prosecco and the restaurant’s very own ‘Avalanche’ cocktail made up of a blend of rumsb and served ice cold in a martini glass with pineapple and passion fruit foam. Delicious canapé’s also made their way round as everyone indulged in scallops, mini bruschettas and carpaccio. Serenaded by the eclectic sounds of lounge jazz, classical violinists and opera singers throughout the evening, guests mingled with drinks in hand as they sampled the Italian menu that displayd classic favourites as well as an impressive seafood selection. Avalanche comes complete with a fresh fish counter, which will undoubtedly become a favourite amongst Manchester’s foodies. La Vida’s very own Features Editor, Jsky, was also on hand playing host at the launch whilst the rest of the team spent a good half an hour snapping photos infront of the state-of-the-art photobooth provided by OnoMonoMedia. The digital booth printed the pictures there and then ready for us take home and pin up on our wall. Who doesn’t love a quick souvenir to remember a fabulous night?


The launch of the restaurant was held in conjunction with a highprofile fundraising gala for the Kirsty Club; a campaign that works towards supporting the Francis House Children’s Hospice. Fundraising met glamour on the night with a raffle packed with fabulous prizes as to raise money for the great cause. Winners walked away with spa days, dinners for two and prized memorabilia such as signed David Beckham items amongst many other fantastic gifts. “We are very excited about hosting this fundraising event on our opening night. It’s going to be a fantastic party, with great people and a great charity.” - Co-owner, Bahman ‘Bob’ Ghojehvand. Having previously owned Don Giovanni, the team behind Avalanche are dedicated to creating and serving authentic Italian cuisine and seafood specialities. Bahman went on to say;

Don't Join The Broken Hearts Club Written by Stuart Pilkington

Heart related illnesses are responsible for more premature deaths for people today than any other cause. The big mistake many of us make is that we believe heart related illnesses are only something that happens in later life. The truth is, between the ages of 28-45 the risk of heart disease hits a spike and increases 10 times over. It is how we live during our 20’s that can affect this statistic. Forming good habits and routines in your 20’s and 30’s will give your heart (and other organs) the foundation it needs later in life. Okay, so that's the long term benefits; living longer and feeling better, correlating to spending less time in the doctors when you’re older. Let's face it though, that little carrot isn't enough for most people to change their minds. So let me give you some real motivation.

Sex

Although not exactly a life threatening cure, sex can have huge benefits to your heart and to your sex life. Looking after your heart by eating healthily and tweaking your exercise routine will mean looking leaner, fitter, more attractive and with this, make you feel better; boosting your confidence. With this healthy mind-set and fit body, your sexual performance and stamina will improve and, parallel to this, everyone knows sex is good for the heart. Now, lets look at the biggest contributing factors to heart disease (also applicable to many other lifestyle diseases).

Smoking Smoking remains one of the biggest cause of many diseases today, with many people smoking socially and others, well, continuously. Regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke, the underlying fact is that smoking isn’t good for you. I know many people don’t like to hear the constant preaching of how bad smoking is and many might skip past reading this section. Nonetheless, I hope that you all take a minute to think about the damage smoking does to your body and, in particular, your heart. Not only is smoking ridiculously expensive, but it increases your risk for certain cancers, lung and respiratory diseases as well as heart disease. Each time you smoke, you inhale 4,000 chemicals, 50 of which have been proven to cause cancer that are harmful to the cardiovascular system (your heart). Smoking thickens the blood, making it harder for the blood to carry oxygen, damaging the walls of the blood vessels leaving them narrow or inflamed; increasing your risk of heart attacks.

Obesity

Obesity can be directly correlated to heart disease and heart failure; intimately intertwined with cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal blood cholesterol and sleep apnoea. The extra weight one carries around, due to being overweight, puts pressure on the heart causing it to work harder to supply blood to the added fatty tissue – the more fatty tissue you carry, the more blood your heart has to pump. Long story short, the pressure of being overweight given to your heart can, in turn, take its toll, exposing your heart to the extra strain and subsequent damage.


Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol, although a social norm in today's society, links greatly to the risks of developing heart disease and relates to the previous factors covered. Drinking too much alcohol can raise the levels of some fats in the blood, triglycerides. Alcohol is sometimes known as ‘liquid fat’ with numerous calories present in favourite alcoholic beverages. Consuming too much alcohol and in turn calories, can lead to obesity and a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Cutting meat out of your diet just one day a week can lower your saturated fat (bad fat) intake by 15%. Reducing your saturated fat will reduce both your risk of heart disease by 14% but also help alkaline your body, preventing your body from many common diseases.

Excessive drinking and in particular binge drinking, can lead to strokes, high blood pressure, heart failure and an increase in calorie intake. Drink responsively. As you can see, there are many factors that contribute to cardiovascular diseases, so many that it’s almost daunting. Before we start with the obvious tips such as lose weight, exercise more and drink less, I want to touch on something that in many ways is the most important factor. The key to your defence against heart disease and other life style illnesses is your psychological resilience. Stress is the underpinning factor of many diseases we all face today from the common cold (the weakening of your immune system from stress), to heart disease. If you don't feel in control of your life, adding to it with the worry of getting healthy and looking good is not going to be easy, nor enjoyable (yes, getting healthy is supposed to be invigorating and enjoyable). With the current economic climate, the extra long working days, less expendable income and the rise in alcoholism (largely correlating to the previous comments), our stress levels are at an all time high. This is a particularly worrying factor for young men reaching their mid 20s; the highest risk of developing depression. I therefore want you to address ways of developing mental clarity and building a stress relief program.

Be decisive Instead of agonising over choices, minimise your financial risk by making a monthly budget of expendable income for luxuries such as going out, eating out or buying cigarettes. Although only three pointers, some of which seem fairly obvious, I found straight away that my clients feel more empowered and less stressed now they have taken away the uncertainty of “can I afford to do this?”

Change The Way You Workout Focus on taking part in a power yoga class, even if it’s only once every other week it’s still beneficial. Yoga, along with a good instructor, can help your body’s own ability to reduce stress. Reducing stress can, in turn, stabilise blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease as well as help make you feel physically better about yourself. Remember though, stress alone doesn't cause heart disease but our responses to stress do! When stressed we often turn to alcohol, junk food or drugs. So now, don't. Use your stess as a motivator in the gym and relsease your tension.

Get Social Becoming more active in your family, social group or joining exercise classes are all linked to reducing stress and increasing physical activity. Just don't resort to making the social gathering the pub!

Hit The Gym The most obvious of all tips, but surely worth mentioning. Increasing the intensity of your workout and introducing interval training (short bursts of intense exercise mixed with periods of moderate intensity) will help your heart. Unfortunately, merely doing this once a week isn't going to be enough to make a big impact on your health. A balance needs to be set. ternal life is impossible so why not try the next best thing; a life enriched for a healthy mind and healthy body. The pressures and expectations of living in the 21st century, the distractions, the indulgences and of course the sheer lack of time, make it increasingly hard to get fit and even harder to stay healthy. Combine this with the extreme emphasis on achieving the ‘ideal weight’, as well as the many misconceptions surrounding health in general, it's no wonder following a healthy lifestyle becomes so difficult.

What is the answer? The first step is to make sure you don't get carried away by setting yourself a crazy restrictive diet and unrealistic hours of exercise. By the same token, get realistic! Lifestyle changes are important. If you want to play hard you've got to work hard (in terms of your health) and swapping to a diet coke with a large fast food meal is not going to make you feel or look any better. Your body is under constant attack from pollution, late nights, long hours at the office and all those cocktails you’re downing at the weekend, so help it out. Nourish your body from the inside out and let your diet help you feel energised and ready for anything.

Yoga is one of my favourite tools to use with my clients in order to help them focus at work, improve their clarity of mind, reduce stress and improve their body shape. Even just one session a week will help balance your hormone levels and allow your body to cleanse.

Lemon/Lime - a slice or 2 in hot water each morning will stimulate your digestive system, clearing out the toxins.

I run a Monday morning and evening class where we look to flush all the toxins out after a weekend on the town and cleanse the body. We couple this with our #meatfreemondays to give your body the kick start it needs every week. The purpose of this is to get people to program in their minds at least one day each week in which they do everything perfect. It's like a spa day for your insides. As I always say, the key is balance! Just as your shopping basket needs to be varied, so does your exercise.

Here are some of the best wellbeing tips for you city slickers: Avocado - a naturally alkalising fruit high in magnesium. This helps boost your immune system.

•Melt the cocoa butter using either a dehydrator or by steaming over a pan of hot water. •Grind the cashews in the food processor to a flour. •Add raisins, cocoa nibs and molasses (or substitute) to the food processor along with the grinded cashews and melted butter. Blend until combined. •Transfer to a cake tin spreading evenly with a spatula or spoon. Store in the freezer whilst you make the topping.

Topping: •Grind the brazil nuts in the food processor to a flour. •Add all other ingredients to the grounded nuts and blend until combined. •Remove cake tin from the freezer and using a spoon or spatula evenly spread the chocolate mixture on top of the base. •Return to the freezer for 1 hour or until cake is set. Then refrigerate. Will usually keep for 2-3 days.

This month, it’s time to show the versatility and range of ‘raw food’ and the efects it can have on our diet, in particular, satisfying our sweet tooth. Before I switched to eating a predominantly raw food diet, my lifelong sweet tooth was always something I saw as a negative thing. I had stuck to the inevitable stigma that eating raw food would not allow me to indulge in sweet treats but instead follow a bland meal plan. Whenever I satisfied my cravings, I would unavoidably feel guilt for whatever sugar filled treat I would allow to pass my lips. This is where raw food comes in. The natural ingredients, lack of chemicals and natural goodness helped satisfy my love for sweet things. Boasting both a healthy body and tasty guilt free pleasures, raw food replaces the guilt with a healthy buzz - you know you have just nurtured your body. Most of the commercial chocolates produced today follow a very different recipe; a recipe that focuses on filling the chocolates with refined sugars and various other chemicals. Although honey has approximately the same relative sweetness as that of granulated sugar and both contain glucose and fructose, honey is much more beneficial for the body that sucrose (sugar). Granulated table sugar has glucose and fructose hooked together, whereas in honey, fructose and glucose remain in individual units. Fructose is sweeter than glucose, the reason it is used in so many commercial food products today. Fructose however, does no convert to energy as efficiently as glucose.

As a result, processed foods containing granulated sugar are high in fructose which converts to fat stores more easily than honey. This natural source of sugar therefore helps not only improve your muscle strength and endurance but also gives you a healthy energy boost. Add honey to anything as a substitute for sugar or just for that instant energy kick. Another great natural sweetener is molasses; the product of extraction from the raw sugar cane. Although molasses is extracted and boiled, the food energy content of blackstrap molasses is still mostly from the small remaining sugar content. However, unlike refined sugars, it contains trace amounts of vitamins and significant amounts of minerals. Blackstrap molasses is a source of calcium, vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium and iron which are all essential for a healthy body. It also gives this cake a really nice added flavor. Psyllium seed husk is used in this recipe to help bind the topping together. As a great source of dietary fibre, psyllium improves both digestion and intestinal tract health. Perfect to use with molasses or honey, the psyllium seed husk provides a source of fiber alongside the sugar. The fiber helps your liver to break down the sugar, reducing the amount that is stored by the body as fat. This is why natural sugar in fruit is so good for you - it comes with the perfect required amount of fibre.

Banana is the final ingredient to this recipe. With a great source of potassium, carbohydrates, Vitamin A, iron and phosphorus, the banana is a true ‘super food’. hey say that trends come and go; that lifestyles change and people seek different things. It’s the 21st century and today is no different. It has always been the social norm for women to indulge in the benefits of hair salons and grooming and as the years have gone by this trend has adapted. Now men seek this solitude, this ability to take care and look after themselves and, of course, their hair.

Redirecting his life completely, Alex focused on qualifying as a hairstylist purely as a part time job, a way to gather money to follow his acting dreams yet keeping with his creative passion. Looking back, this was obviously his true calling.

Meeting the owner and man behind this reinvention of male grooming in Manchester is Alex Shore. Now 29 years old, Alex has worked his way up the grooming ladder from the age of 18 establishing himself as a true stylist and barber. “During college I focused on graphic design, art and performing arts, changing direction in life, the barber floor, is now my stage”.

Despite all staff trained to stylist standards, the ‘typical’ look does not apply, another aspect that makes Close Male Grooming so unique. With eccentric, tattooed and quirky coiffeurs, there is no riff-raff, no nonsense just a relaxed and chilled environment for the man to enjoy.

I want to host training courses and seminars within the barbershop as well as utilising it as an event space. That way I can give something back and give people the nudge into hair styling for men” Not the only future goal, Alex also hopes to expand his chain of barbers. With the aim of opening a few more stores within Manchester, he also seeks to venture out of his hometown. “I have continuous ideas and a scope to open quite a few more stores within Manchester. My main plan though is to go further, go out of Manchester. I don’t know where yet but I will. I don’t want to substitute the quality, so I’m waiting for the right time”. As a way of diversifying Alex aims to create products replicating the Close Male Grooming experience he and his team offer. Products that are high end and very select, specific to his market. To do this though Alex thinks like a true businessman. “As much as I can’t wait to create my own products from scratch, I want to establish Close Male Grooming as a brand first and then move on to products…maybe in a year or so”. With this sense of passion and talent, Alex has managed to create a unique experience and viable environment for men to take a break. This unique barber offers not only quality grooming but also a relaxing and fun environment; a perfect destination for the workingman. It’s no secret that New York born Scott Disick oozes confidence. As the character that everyone loves to hate, Scott told Men’s Fitness magazine his secret to keeping up his spirits: “I’d rather be dressed up than dressed down. I really enjoy trying to look as great as I can all the time. It gives me a sense of confidence.” Famed for his stylish attire more-so than anything else, Scott wannabes will be pleased to hear that he divulged to us the source of most of these chic clothes. His favourite store, 'The House of Bijan', is a by appointment only showroom boutique on the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, described by some as “the most expensive store in the world”. Well, obviously it would be a favourite of Lord Disick! Although the ‘Lord’ title is self-bestowed, others agree that he holds significant influence in terms of fashion. Jon Caramanica of New York Times gushes, “I think Scott Disick is one of the most important style icons of the last decade.” Not a particular fan of humility, Scott says, “it’s true, my biggest fashion fauxpas ever was a broken button.” His business ventures include involvement in multiple companies in the vitamin and cosmetic industries. Aside from his frequent appearances on the Kardashians’ various reality shows as well as numerous celebrity appearances (these being one of them), Scott opened a restaurant earlier this year. 'RYU' in New York City is possibly the most impressive of Scott’s ventures.


Although jet-setting and business-minded, Scott’s love for his children is clearly at the forefront of his mind, even in this glittering setting. Mason, who turns four on December 14th, and Penelope, five months old, are the apples of his eyes. “My son is my world, and my daughter is my new world, so it all combines. It’s pretty unbelievable starting a new chapter in your life.” Taking from both parents, the children are both gorgeous and extremely stylish.

“Even my parents say that my kids are cuter than I was as a child, even though they were totally obsessed with me.” Scott’s ups and downs in his relationship with girlfriend Kourtney have been widely chronicled on her show 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' and 'Kourtney & Khloé Take Miami'. Viewers have seen his personal and professional lows, and through them, he has adamantly maintained his highflying lifestyle, keeping up an air of luxury, drowning his sorrows in the best spirits and gorging on the finest foods on offer.

When we asked what his favourite eatery was, he told us of his love of 'Katsuya' Restaurant in California. The 'Katsuya' chain of restaurants are highly coveted, with master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi’s food and design producer Phillipe Stark’s visual expertise combined. Scott is not the only celebrity with a soft spot for this hot-spot, the 'Katsuya' restaurants is regularly frequented by the local celebrities of L.A. and California. Whether you love him or hate him, the fact remains that that Scott Disick is one discernibly dapper TV personality, businessman and family-man, who does not go unnoticed. What could sushi possibly have in common with art? Well, what if we were to say sushi is art? A truth widely unknown, now brought to light. The History. Contrary to popular belief, sushi, first introduced as Narezushi, originated in South-East Asia over a thousand years ago before spreading throughout southern China where, approximately 200 years later, it crossed the east sea to the forefront of Japanese cuisine. However, Narezushi was a far cry from its raw fresh-fished cousin loved today. It was built using salted fish which was then wrapped in fermented rice until months later the fermented rice was discarded and the fish was only part consumed. The word ‘sushi’ itself derives from this original method, translating as ‘sour tasting’; a reflection of its historic fermented roots.

Sushi traditionalists today still believe the fish should never be raw, nor completely fresh.

The Art Today: In Japan, sushi has taken many different forms but from Kansai style to Edo style one thing remains paramount; the presentation. For well over a century this has been a fundamental practice every sushi chef holds in common. Like artists, every chef often adds their own twist on a piece, a distinct aesthetic if you will.

The California Roll, a bastion of the sushi diaspora, shows just how well a sushi roll can embody its namesake. The roll, which has become an indispensable component on every sushi menu, was introduced in 1960s Los Angeles through the influx of Japanese chefs seeking the ‘American Dream’. Consisting of avocado, cucumber, crab and tobiko (fish eggs), the piece not only boasts a unique taste, but also a variety of colours, which triumphantly symbolized the regions diverse demographic group. Comprised with chicken and spinach, the Green Heart personifies simplicity but don’t be deceived. There’s nothing more difficult than simplicity, and with a mouthwatering coat of teriyaki sauce, there’s no wonder it’s a fans favorite. The Beef Avocado Roll, again coated in teriyaki sauce, is another extremely popular roll. With an avocado nucleus and a beef topping, the beautifully presented Avocado Roll is a masterpiece amongst its piers. An edible Mona Lisa. And for the fish lovers? The Uramaki and Spider Rolls. Often a choice for the connoisseurs, the Uramaki Roll is one of the most intricate of the sushi rolls. With a prawn and avocado core, topped with a fresh chunk of raw salmon, chilli mayonnaise and a trickle of batter, you just simply can’t go wrong. If you don’t like creepy crawlies then the Spider Roll is not for you. Not for the faint hearted, the roll is a beautifully designed piece of sushi which once again epitomizes the relationship between the cuisine and the arts. The intricate legs are a homage to the delicate nature of the cuisine, a cuisine constantly affected by pollution and overfishing.

Don’t worry though, its not a spider your eating it’s in fact a delicious soft shell crab combined with cucumber and topped with a complimentary spicy tobiko sauce. For the herbivores out there, don’t fret, there’s also a dish for you; The Avocado Roll. A surprisingly delicious roll, the avocado roll is a melting pot of vegetarian flavours including Japanese pickle and thinly sliced carrots. Complete with toppings of avocado, mayonnaise and batter this dish is another outstanding Japanese export; a dish as healthy as it is appetizing. I, for one, am one of these pursuers and I can safely say, the search is over. 2012 welcomed the opening of the new Italian restaurant Avalanche. Located in the heart of the 'Italian Quarter', or 'Little Italy' as we like to call it, the beautiful resturant sits on the corner of Booth Street between Albert’s Square and the prestigious King Street. Avalanche now marks the return of authentic Italian food in Manchester to the home of where it all began. Isola Bella was the first Italian restaurant in greater Manchester and now Avalanche symbolises this circle of life; bringing high-end Italian cuisine back to the same venue. This funky Italian boasts an Italian fusion menu with Mediterranean influences throughout. High-quality Italian food forms the heart of the menu but influences from across the Mediterranean add a modern edge to some of these traditional dishes. With the help of the newly appointed executive chef, John Thompson, the Avalanche menu avowals a selection of fish and seafood dishes alongside the definitive Italian spreads. With a history working and living in a selection of countries as well as a firm link between Manchester and Italy, this chef is the perfect pioneer for the eminent dishes at Avalanche. As the emphasis of Italy has always been on local food and wine, the closer to home the better, it is therefore only fitting that the fresh seasonal ingredients dictating the dishes created are sourced locally. With detectable examples such as fresh halibut (baked in the oven and served on baby spinach, topped with creamy butter sauce and king prawns) and the lobster, king prawns risotto (cooked in red wine with cherry tomatoes and parmesan shavings) the quality of the fish is viable and the reason why John visits the markets daily.

The atmosphere changes and the downstairs section turns into what can only be described as a luxurious private club; the Avalanche Club. This unique concept is one that will really make Avalanche stand out from the other restaurants within the 'Italian Quarter'. This combination of private dining with a lounge bar, the night as a catalytic change to the ambience of the restaurant and of course the beautiful, fantastic dishes all complement one another to replicate the fine dining visions of Avalanche.

T H U R S D A Y S As one of the most well regarded club nights in the country today, Eivissa has grown and expanded, setting a new standard amongst the Manchester Scene. Scott Shashua, Michael Iskalachi and Scott Thomas started the Eivissa brand back in 2009 in Wilmslow’s Revolution Bar; a night that was unique to Wilmslow and remains so to this day. Starting from a young age, their early 20’s, meant that the night came with its up’s and down’s, an aspect all too familiar within this fickle industry. Speaking to the SMS Promotions team though, this became an opportunity and a drive for success. They are now expected to be returning home for the holidays! Yes, Eivissa returns home to Wilmslow for Christmas on Wednesday 19th and 26th of December. When asking them how much this meant to them they replied saying:

“It means the world to us! It’s where it all started and we

are grateful to be in a position where we can host as many events over as many parts of the city and outside of the

city for that matter. We really are humbled and excited! It going to be emotional; we really can’t wait!”

If you haven’t heard or haven’t been down to Eivissa yourself over the past 8 weeks, then you missed out on some star studded events. Eivissa hosted some of the biggest parties in the North West in the past 2 months including The Risk Couture Winter Launch with Mario Falcone and Mario Ballotelli; Mark Wright’s Mr. and Mrs. Wright's Perfume Party and the ever so glamorous X Factor and Derby Day After Party, which was graced with appearances by the likes of Manchester United squad members, Manchester City squad members, One Direction, Tulisa, Olly Murrs and Little Mix.

When asked how this event came to life the boys replied saying;

“It was really out of the blue. We were approached with

the idea and it was really unexpected. Then again, it was a huge privilege! It was an opportunity that we couldn’t

pass up. We did it and it was a great party. The vibe, the crowd, the venue; it was all amazing and we couldn’t be more happy with the outcome.”

With such success it only leaves you wondering how the boys have been coping and how this success has impacted their personal lives. So when we asked them the said

clock during December, which is our busiest time of year. All we can say is that we have huge expansion plans for 2013. We are excited to see how it all unfolds!”

ideo killed the radio star, a bold statement made by The Boggles in 1979, the era of the radio. Today this song has become a classic and with this, pessimists have formed towards radio. The reality is that radio is flourishing once again, although some believe it never diminished. The radio has become an entity in today’s age, in a world where media is becoming increasingly focused on immersion. In the realm of media, our options do not change, but rather broaden. The progression of media is simple and easy to follow; the written, radio, movies, television, computer games and many more. The difference between these and other technologies is each different link within this chain remains viable alternatives to the others. The question is though, how does radio remain so popular against the ever-growing behemoth of television? The most obvious reason, its engagement of purely the aural senses. By engaging only our ears, the radio can become incorporated into every working day life. With the nation constantly ‘on-the-go’, the radio is a prefect source of entertainment be it whilst driving, the strongest hold of radio listeners, in the shower or merely relaxing in the solitude of your home.

Whilst other methods of media are much more demanding, the radio is designed solely as a solo flow of information. Quite simply, radio provides us with entertainment that takes up far less concentration; entertaining us without our full focus from aspects such as the news, traffic reports to the latest hits. Whilst radio becomes our ‘companion’, as such, whilst driving, have you ever wondered who this voice is? This voice that wakes up and travels with you every morning. The voice that alerts and guides you home whilst entertaining you? If so, it’s time to meet the faces behind the voices...

Sally Hudson What’s your role on Capital FM? I host the drive time show from 4-6 every weekday evening when most people are on their way home from work, school, university, stuck in traffic or watever else. I also work on my own, no sidekick, which I love. I love talking, so it’s perfect! Where did you begin? I first got into radio about ten years ago when I was 24. It’s a weird story really.


After graduating from university studying media and women studies, I moved out to Florida. I worked for Disney World and absolutely loved it but only for about 15 months untill I came back to England. I then randomly met a girl who worked at a radio station and after reading an article about Sarah Cox and how women don’t like listening to other women on the radio (this is 10yrs ago bare in mind), I thought, “I love Sarah Cox”. I didn’t like being patronised by men on the radio, us women don’t like that, we like advice not being told what to do. So, I saw a gap in the market for a woman to be herself and give advice to other women; someone who’s down to earth, like me! I loved going out and socialising and having a laugh so I thought ‘why not?’.

What do you find to talk about? Anything! It sounds weird but after a while your whole life becomes your preparation. I used to work in Tesco’s when I was younger and I remember when I used to drive home, after a crap day, I’d want to listen to something light-heated and funny but there wasnt really anything. So, I talk about these aspects, the stuff that I wanted to hear. If you do this people get involved. Really though I talk about anything. I’ve talked about whether you brush your teeth with hot or cold water or whether you brush them in the shower, locking myself out of my car, things that your gran says - all sorts. It’s all very light-hearted but what’s funny though are the responses I get, they crack me up.

What do you love to talk about on the show? I love talking about observations like women looking for shoes, keys, random things that happen on a daily basis to women. Something that women can relate to and think ‘that’s me!’ or ‘I do that’ or even ‘what? Who does that?’. Guys don’t do this, so I do.

I talk about normal things - reality. As long as you remain upbeat and keep everything relatable and play all the hit music, it’s a success.

How did you get into radio? I had a demo CD made up after thinking that I could really do this. I lived in the south then, but had family in Birmingham and Manchester so I sent the demo out to any station I could ideally go to. My first radio ‘gig’ was in Birmingham, I was s**t scared! I then did work experience in Wilkshire, Baulmoth, freelance at Heart Radio, Virgin, a week with Key 103, so a lot until I got a full time gig in Bristol. I was then approached to live in Newcastle and do the drive time show there. It was amazing! The fact I was pretty much the first woman to do the drive time show was awsome and I love the Geordies! So, I worked for 3 years in Newcastle for Galaxy [now Capital], when the boss approached me asking if I wanted to do Manchester...and it’s been 5 years now!

What do you love about Manchester? Love the shopping and the people. It’s really weird the fact I moved up here, it’s almost as if everything fell into place. Manchester is more or less where I was born. My whole family lives up here - we were the only family that moved to the south, and now it’s all sat in place. I Love Manchester, the people are lovely and so straight to the point. I love it all. All the Christmas markets, the festivities, how everyone gets together; people live in Manchester because they love it. I love it. Would you stay in radio? It’s been crazy. Looking back I loved Florida it was hilarious and unbelievable. If I could, I would move to Miami tomorrow, I love it. For the time being though, I’m super happy. There’s so much going on which is what I love. There’s the Jingle Bell Ball at the London 02 arena, which is going to be incredible, and I just turned on the Christmas lights in Bolton! My mission for this Christmas is going to be to talk on air about why we women insist on buying new tops for Christmas day when all we do is sit at home. It’s like a Christmas tradition with us! Rachel Burke-Davies What’s your role on Capital FM? I do the weekday morning show, the Capital FM breakfast. I work alongside Rob Ellis and Wingman with the help of producer ‘gorgeous’ as we call him, we're like one big sometimes happy family. They’re like 3 annoying brothers that constantly want to annoy me but I have thick skin and give it back. I put them in their place. We are very honest with each other and as irritating as it is to say we know each other more than we’d probably like to. They say things like I’m 70 years old and I lived in the war. I bet it’s hard waking up so early Its horrible, I have to be up at 5am nearly everyday which is ironic considering I definitely don’t class myself as a morning person, but I have to say I’ve learnt and I cope!! Either way, regardless of the time we still manage to have fun which is important. It’s my job to make the first brew of the day so once that’s done, I’m in a relatively better mood. What do you find to talk about? Loads of people ask me that question and to be honest, there isn’t really a routine. Just do whatever. For us it’s really just talking about things going on in our life or if there’s anything important going on in the news. No matter what though, we do keep it as upbeat and funny as possible, after all it is 6am. How did you get into radio? I’m originally from Sale so I went to college in Manchester studying A-level dance. One of the girls I studied with worked at Capital flyering part time. I went in, had a quick interview and did that for about six months. I then moved up to become crew chief, worked on reception and carried on working in promotions for about seven to eight years. It was always a secret ambition of mine to work on the radio or TV, so I spoke to the programme director and made a demo. He obviously didn’t think I was to bad as he put me with Rob and it worked. A year after that it was still working and I started the Thursday mornings and i'm still here now! Would you like to stay in radio? I love the radio; I like to talk, have a giggle so really, it ticks all the boxes for me. I love it here. What do you love about Manchester? I love the people. The listeners each day are fantastic. The responses I get, even at 6am, are hilarious! What can we expect in the future from you? Other than the continuous banter from the guys, I love challenges. Last year I took part in the Manchester marathon which took me five and a half hours. This year I’m looking to cut it down by an hour so wish me luck!

As if going to 'Hot Creations - Presents Paradise' wasn’t exciting enough, going with Jamie Jones, Carl Craig, Kerri Chandler, Maceo Plex, Subb-an, Miguel Campbell, Infinity Ink, Alexis Raphael and Danny Daze was an expereince of a lifetime. With many more DJs in the mix, therse are just some to name a few. The team here at La Vida Magazine were given the privilege to interview Heidi Van Den Amstel, aka DJ Heidi, before she went on to destroy room 2 at the mecca that is 'The Warehouse Project' (WHP). Shooting off around the world with her terpsichorean Jackathon parties, doing BBC Radio 1’s Residency show most Friday nights and being in transit her entire life, we were expecting a woman to walk in to the back stage room at the WHP black eyed, haggard, with a short fuse ready to be ignited. My Lord, we couldn’t have been more wrong. In walked one of the most charming, bubbly and happy women we’ve ever had the privelage to interview. Big blond wavy hair, beautiful tattoos rolling from her shoulders and down her arms and a big smile stretching from ear to ear, she totally lit up the room. One reasons we believed for this must have been because she was back on her home-turf of Manchester. “I don’t really consider Canada my home. I’m from there but it’s not my home. Manchester is my home. Manchester has given me so much love this year especially at Parklife Festival. I walked into an empty tent, put on a record and 3,500 people turned up. It was the most amazing thing. I was like, 'Who’s going to want to come and see me in this tent, on my own?' But they all came. I mean the tent had to be closed off because it was too full. I got so worked up that I was almost in tears from being so excited and feeling the love, not only of the city, but also of the people that really had my back. They’re devoted to me here in this city for some reason. I feel like I have a lot of fans in Manchester. Big love for the Northerners.” She couldn’t have said it with more gusto and genuine passion if she tried. Even I felt a tear jerking from my eyes as she said it. It’s hard not to get wrapped up in it when someone spills their heart out to you like that. Or maybe it was because she was back at the WHP? “The first one I did was at Store Street NYD 2 years ago. It was really intense. I played Leeds the night before and they tried to murder me. I literally was sent here in a body bag. I remember me and my friend were shuddering at the thought. Then I came in and was like what the hell, this is mental. I love this place.” We asked her what she thought of the new venue for the WHP. “Room 2 is the dopest place I’ve played at in the UK. The sound, vibe, lights, energy. It’s got that old school Berlin, Tresor vibe. That’s the real rave room. I mean there’s no messing about. It’s like you’re going there to get hammered and dance your ass off and sweat until you can’t sweat anymore. That, for me, is what it’s all about. I don’t care about light shows and pyrotechnics, I just want to hear the music really loud. I want to be so deaf when I leave that it feels like I've got tin cans on my ears.” But it’s not all fun and games for DJ Heidi. She has worked hard over the past decade to make her mark on the new house and techno music generation. It all started in her youth growing up in Windsor, Onatario, Canada just across the border from Detroit. Many would say that Detroit is one of the cities where house music really came into its own in the early 1980’s and you can clearly hear the influence it has had in her eclectic sets, filled with deep and acid house.


Heidi relocated to London in 2000 where she picked up her craft and deep expertise behind the counter at Koobla Records. Then in 2003, she was part of the team that opened up London’s foremost record shop, Phonica. She started out doing back rooms, playing hip hop and funk and it wasn’t until the record label 'Get Physical' took her under their wings that things really took off. Heidi was invited in 2008 to do her own BBC Radio 1's ‘In New DJs We Trust’ show on a six month contract. She remains there to this day, now hosting her own ‘Radio 1's Residency’ on Friday nights. “I’m very persistent. When I heard ‘In New DJs We Trust’ was finishing I made a conscious decision to move back to London because I knew I needed to be involved, I needed to be as in-their-face as possible and say ‘Look I’m here and I’m dedicated, I want to do something.’” In 2009 she started the Jackathon events at various nightspots across the globe. Both platforms allow her to invite her peers and compadres such as Richie Hawtin, Soul Clap, Solomun, Maceo Plex, Nicolas Jaar and Derrick Carter to share stories and special musical moments with her. In 2011 a compilation album of the same name was released on her original home label, Get Physical, and a sublabel called Heidi presents Jackathon Jams was born from its success. The first EP featured an all-female cast including Maya Jane Coles, Miss Kitten and Tini. Heidi spends her life immersed in music. She lives and breathes the touring lifestyle, whether its a 25,000 person crowd in Latin America, or festivals around globally or holding her own at Jackathon residency strongholds in Ibiza, London, Berlin’s Watergate and Manchester; she fits within any destination around the world. She is a true idol to all female DJs in the field. We asked her what advice she would give to an up and coming girl DJ who’s starting out. ‘’Well you have to have armour for skin and you have to be willing to give up a lot of yourself. You have to sacrifice personal time, personal life, freedom, relationships and children if you want to do it properly. Or, just become a lesbian because that’s the only way you can actually have a relationship. Being a female DJ and straight doesn’t really happen very much.

Guys are afraid of the alpha female. You have to be able to almost be like a guy. I’ve always been like a tom—boy. I speak my mind a little bit too much. The grace falls by the wayside sometimes, but I didn’t get to where I am today by letting people walk all over me. I have an opinion and I speak it.’’

We decided to finish off the interview with some fun questions.

With that attitude it is no surprise she is where she is today. Heidi makes it in to Resident Advisor’s top 100 DJs year after year as voted for by the people and is a favourite of 1,700 Resident Advisor users.

DJs – “Richie Hawtin for sure. He inspired me and I probably wouldn’t be sitting here today if it wasn’t for him. I’ve got to say Maceo Plex. He’s pretty damn good. I’m definitely down with him. Also Soul Clap. They’re more sex vibes and I’ve never met two more genuinely amazing people in my life. I fell madly in love with the two of them. It wasn’t like a sexual love it was more agape in nature. Like I love you guys, like holy crap I love you. I’ve never felt that, I want to be with you but not have sex with you, type of thing.”

With the awareness and knowledge one must gain from travelling the world we asked what her favourite countries, cities and clubs were. “I love playing in Mexico. In fact anywhere in South America is amazing. They’ve got fire like other people don’t have. They’re not so uptight and they’re not afraid to talk. England is like that too but in a totally different way. They’re a little bit more abrasive in England whereas they’re a little bit warmer in South America. They’re softer in their approach as opposed to British people but they’re very similar in their love for the music. Favourite club has to be 'The Warehouse Project'. Favourite city has to be Manchester. I just absolutely love this place man.” DJ Heidi is one busy lady. She will be playing at 'Krankbrother NYE', WHP closing party and 'Bristol In:Motion' on NYD. She’s also doing 'Bugged Out Weekender' and 'Hideout Festival' just to name a few events. From this, we wondered what she was most looking forward to doing. “I’m most looking forward to doing the WHP closing party. Hideout Festival hasn’t asked me to do a boat party this year. But I’m going to sneak on somebodies boat and kick somebody off the decks regardless. I’m also doing a Jackathon party at a lot of festivals this year. I’m doing Lovebox, Parklife and Global Gathering. Jackathon is taking over next year. They’re giving me full reign over whole tents.”

Heidi’s guilty pleasures – “There’s like a million. Jesus. I’m a child of the 80’s man. I’ve got too many. Wham. I'm a big Wham fan and the old George Michael. I love him. I privately dance to him.” Heidi’s tips for the ladies – “Stop wearing so much make up. It’s disgusting. It’s gross. It doesn’t make you look good. Take your false eyelashes off. Take your hair extensions out. Dress down a little bit. Keep it real. Less make up is way prettier and keeps you looking younger and fresher."For the men – “Stop wearing clothes that are too tight for you. Stop wearing vest tops when it’s below zero outside. No fake tan. And don’t put so much gel in your hair. Don’t put any hair product in unless you’re doing a proper quiff or a jackmaster.” Following the half hour interview we all went down to see Kerri Chandler smash the crowd to pieces. It was good getting to know the woman behind the balsamaceous music and see her grooving out to Strings of Life by Soul Central. That won’t be a memory we’ll be forgetting any time soon. “I know most of you have scrimped and saved to pay for your 70 pound ticket, and spent weeks deciding on your outfits….so tonight, I’m gonna dance my p***y off!” She entered the stage draped in black, riding a black horse out of an enchanted castle. She had a costume change for almost every song, and yes, she absolutely danced her p***y off (although her dance moves were somewhat questionable). Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, is arguably the biggest thing in popular culture right now. Dominating the charts and catwalks and the world over, she is now infecting our senses with the launch of her new fragrance Fame. Her cross appeal has much amassed since her debut performance of Let’s Dance almost 3 years ago at a gay club here in Manchester.

Surrounded by an army of her ‘Monsters’ [fans], I became witnesses to her message. Through the make-up, the pop anthems and the downright over the top, Gaga’s ulterior motives were manifested. This was not just any show. This was politics.

“Tonight we give birth to a new race. A race built on equality and freedom. We are the art pop generation.” More than just a seamless plug for her upcoming album rumoured to be entitled 'Art Pop', Gaga’s outbursts were colourful, controversial and thought provoking whilst leaving a lasting impression. Female dancers were symbolically placed into meat grinders as Gaga projected her furiosity of women being treated like pieces of meat. This was then heightened by a reference to her infamous ‘meat’ dress and coupled with the quote:

“I have a few bones to pick with America.”


“I am so sick of all of the vanity in this industry. It ends here. I’m done.” The paradox of fashion; no matter how hard you fight it, it becomes you. By pure essence to revolt is to revolutionise and by proclaiming outright of such is to inspire a catalytic reaction. Lady Gaga is a victim of her own fashion. It binds her and creates conflict; the monster and the music, inseparable and undeniable. Physically giving birth to herself on stage during her performance of Born This Way, we are left to wonder what is next for this young artist.

Review Azealia blew the roof off. I actually thought the ground was about to cave in, and she was only just getting started. In the back of my mind, there was the unprecedented disconcertment that once her club anthem 212 kicks in, all hell would break loose. Nothing would prepare us for the surge of energy that arose as we collectively exhumed that monster floor filler. The crowd had been warmed up by the unconventional hip-hop act Zebra Kats mixing live freestyles over bass-heavy hipster beats. This was no regular live music affair. This was an actual rave. People weren’t afraid to sweat, jump up and down and let the music take over. Lyrics almost felt spoon fed at times; broken down and reiterated. We were being taken to school and Azealia Banks was the teacher. Busting out on stage in a green weave all the way down to her lower back, a bra flashing with neon lights, daisy duke’s, fish net tights and black boots.

“This is my second time in Manchester. I can see a lot of familiar faces, and a lot of my Twitter friends.” Currently standing with over 200,000 followers on Twitter on the opening night of her Fantasea tour. She doesn’t even have an album out yet, just a couple of mixtapes and yet she is single handedly one of the most exciting things to emerge out of modern day hip-hop; the master of her own genre in which she has coined Witch-Hop. She had the crowd in the palm of her hand. Mob like mentality, chanting profusely at the most explicit of key phrases in each record whilst Azealia spun in her short shorts equipped with an angry face in the bliss of a lyrical onslaught. Azealia Banks sure is one feisty woman. Her dancers (one male, one female) with a versatility reminiscent of Madonna’s Vogue performances, it is hard to believe that such an act could be led by someone so young as to be born in 1991. DIAMOND GEEZER How to pick a diamond that will last forever.

Legend dictates the Archduke Maximilian of Austria was the first to make use of a diamond ring. In 1477 to heighten himself as a suitor he came up with an idea that would forever linger on debiting a man’s bank account: why not give his wife to be, Mary of Burgundy, a diamond ring to celebrate their imminent engagement? The ring she received was set with thin, flat pieces of diamonds in the shape of an “M” – it is unknown whether that was to exemplify his or her name. He placed the ring on the third finger of her left hand to bind their love – the finger that ancient Egyptians believed to have a vein that lead straight to the heart. Now I would like to imagine the marriage was a success and they lived happily ever after but that is not known; nor should you or I worry about that. What is of far greater importance is how to select the object that will symbolize the most import relationship in your lifetime. It is no easy decision, nor a decision you should consider inexpensive for that matter. Nikolay Piryankov is a diamond geezer and CEO of online retailer Diamonds In Africa. He kindly shares his insight on how to pick the perfect ring. He stresses time and research, “It really is like buying a house or a car and has equally as many variables to consider". For those geezers considering proposing, pay close attention to make this Christmas your season of love. First, a brief geology lesson. Diamonds are 99.9% pure crystallized carbon, their origin is beneath the Earth’s surface and they can be billions of years old. When Volcano’s erode down, they release diamonds from their feed-pipes into layers of gravel that are later mined. Due to the scarcity of this natural process, mines are few and far in the world. Once mined, diamonds are shipped to the world's cutting centres to be shaped and polished before being set and sold in retailers. It is the brilliance and sparkle that emerges from this ‘process’ that make diamonds a girl's best friend. A diamond has characteristics known as the ‘Four Cs’: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat, all of which must be considered before purchasing. “People generally assume that all diamonds are pretty much the same with the exception of their size; but this is not true.” Nikolay highlights with the exception of cut, the remaining characteristics are determined by nature – meaning cut is open to human error. He stresses that buyers should decide what kind of diamond fits their lady’s personality; often either size or sparkle. The second element of cut is the shape; the most common is the ‘round brilliant’ but several others exist such as emerald and princess. You should ask to see every shape to make sure you have covered all your options.

He advises customers to start with cut. Depending on how well the polisher has cut the diamond, the more it will sparkle with brilliance and colour. “A poorly cut diamond will not reflect light as well and may look life-less, while an ‘excellent-cut’ diamond will be noticeable from across a crowded room.” Colour varies in kind; blue, pink, but in most cases colour refers to how colourless (as opposed to yellow) the diamond is. The scale goes from D-Z (A, B and C don’t exist for some reason) where D is flawless, or absolutely colourless, and Z is noticeably yellow or brownish. Nikolay argues G and H are considered near-colourless and an untrained eye will struggle to tell the difference between a G and a D. He recommends not paying an excessive premium for a D when a G will look just as clear. Clarity refers to the natural defects a diamond has inside it. Such defects are known as ‘inclusions’ and can only be seen with a jeweller’s loupe (a small magnifying glass). With the appearance similar to small clouds, they may affect the diamonds sparkle. However, they are unique to the diamond and you should not worry about what you can’t see. Just remember not to buy a stone graded ‘|1-|3’ unless you consider your fiancèe imperfect? You do have the option to go flawless; the best of all diamonds but with this comes a hefty price tag. If though, especially within this economic climate, you are not viable to spend, instead save up the premium for your honeymoon, as the truly flawless finish is hard to notice.


Nikolay stated, “We recommend you choose a diamond that may have a few very small inclusions which are not visible to the naked eye. Such diamonds are classed as VS1 or VS2.” Finally, the last ‘C’ to consider is carat. This is a measure of a diamonds weight, not size. A carat is divided into 100 points, which is equal to 0.2grams. For example, 0.5carat is 50points or 0.1gram. Do not confuse carats with karats – the purity of gold measurement. “Many people do not know that as a diamond's weight increases, its width doesn't increase proportionally. This means that from the top a 0.5carat diamond looks only slightly smaller than a more expensive one carat diamond even though the size difference is barely noticeable.” Any reputable jeweller will talk to you about the ‘Four Cs’ but Nikolay advises you to “ensure your diamond is of an excellent cut, with a clear white colour and without any noticeable inclusions; and only then decide on the carat based on your budget.” As the saying goes, “Momma didn’t raise no fool!” So request a ‘certified stone’ – a diamond that has been assessed with a laser and graded by an independent laboratory – GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) are the most widely recognized certificate provider. This will also safeguard you against conflict diamonds and those made with substitutes such as Zircon. How much? You may hear that two months salary is the norm, but forget that! If modern data analytics are right about anything, it is that people are shopping and saving more online. The shopkeeper doesn’t always deserve your hard-earned money, so be resourceful and learn about diamonds. A retailer’s margin may be over 100% so shop around. A good salesman won’t insult your intelligence, they will teach you about value. If they do not, consider Diamonds In Africa – Nikolay and his team give you the services of a retailer and the benefits of a wholesaler. Lastly, to be considered a diamond geezer you must understand her taste of jewellery. If you can afford to, buy her the best you can but remember: buy her what she (not you) wants!
