Two days after Marion Cotillard denied having an affair with her Allied co-star Brad Pitt—a tryst that tabloids suggested broke up Pitt and Angelina Jolie—the Oscar winner’s romantic partner Guilluame Canet has posted an Instagram further defending Cotillard.

“I also don’t usually talk about my private life, which until now I’ve always protected attentively,” Canet, who has been with Cotillard since 2007, said in an Instagram caption, that has since been translated by Time. “But the fury of the tabloids, the venal stupidity of some people calling themselves journalists, the haters who feel braver behind a keyboard, drive me to speak of the pride, love, respect and admiration I have for Marion staying as strong and intelligent in the face all these stupid and unfounded accusations.”

“I think we’re all living with much more important things at this moment and now it’s time to move on and raise the bar a bit,” Canet continued in reference to the news cycle. “Even if there’s so much work for some, I want to be positive. . .And as Marion said,” Canet added, presumably in a statement to reporters, “I hope you get better and aspire to something in your life than constantly sending shit!”

Cotillard and Canet have a five-year-old son together, and earlier this week, Cotillard confirmed that she is pregnant with the couple’s second child. The same day she broke the news, Cotillard posted her own defense on Instagram, writing, “This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into,” she said. “I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.”

Earlier this week, Jolie’s attorney confirmed that the actress was divorcing Pitt. “Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage,” Jolie’s attorney told press. “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”

Later, Pitt confirmed the news. “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” the actor said in a statement to People. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
