Marilyn Maxwell Obituary

Marilyn Ann Maxwell
1934 - 2023
Marilyn A. Maxwell passed away this September. She passed quietly at home surrounded by her children. She is survived by five children; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Her husband and best friend of 58 years, William Maxwell passed away in June.
She was born in 1934 in the Dalles, Ore., the only child of Arch and Dorothy Marvel.
Marilyn grew up in Portland and graduated from Jefferson High School.
Marilyn was a high energy and motivated person. She loved gardening and flower arranging, painting and sewing. She was an avid reader. She had a talent for interior design and kept an immaculate home. Marilyn loved to entertain friends and host family occasions from birthdays to elaborately decorated holidays.
Marilyn raised her five children with love and devotion. She was a nurturing mother and impressed upon them her compassion and great sense of loyalty. Leading by example she was not only a full time mother and house wife but she put in many hours toward the success of the family business, Bill's Beef House in Gresham, Ore.
After retirement Marilyn and Bill took their sailboat The Nautical Dreamer up and down the Pacific coast. As far north as Victoria, British Columbia and south to inside the Baja Peninsula, Mexico. Later in their retirement they spent time snowbirding between home in Boring, Ore., and Casa Grande, Ariz.
For those who knew her and those she touched, this is a great loss and she will be truly missed.

Not sure what to say?

Marilyn well be certainly missed by her family. I remember from the time I was little coming over for family get together and Holiday parties, Marilyn was always happy and very nice. She always had a smile and kind words spoken. Every time we went to Bills Beef House Meats she was always smiling and very friendly to everyone. She had a way of making you feel part of her family with her kindness and love. I know she well be greatly missed, and I know she is in Heaven with Uncle Bill back together once again.

I was incredibly fortunate to meet Marilyn when she and Bill were the first to welcome me to my(our) new neighborhood in King City. I admired her from the moment I met her and simply don't have adequate words to describe how much I came to admire and love her. She was one of the people that is easy to gravitate to and we became great friends. She exemplified what it means to be a doting wife, mother and grandmother. I know the entire family is enduring unbearable sadness with her passing. Wrapping you in all in love at a time when words fall short. Thank you for sharing your very special mom!

My Mom
She was a wonderful woman and mother, and I was so fortunate to have her for my mom. She taught me love, how to be strong and loyal. She was an inspiration in my life and so much more. My mom was there for me whenever I needed her, rather with kind words of advice, or just a helping hand, she was always there. I carry a part of her within me, and where ever I am I know she is there. I love her and miss her more than words can say, but I will stand strong knowing my mom is standing right next to me.

I am not, and would´ve never been prepared to be writing this. I am thoroughly struggling to find the words or even grasp the loss of loosing not one, but two of my most beloved people. I find solace in knowing they are together again, and that they couldn´t bear to be without one another. True love at its finest. Soulmates until the end.
There is no part of my childhood that my grandma wasn´t involved in. She and my grandpa treated me like one of their own, taking me in and creating a healthy and abundant environment full of love, learning, and beautiful memories. So much of who I am today was built in the house on Debora Drive. I long to be back there, learning, exploring, finding bugs, chasing butterflies and walking the property with my grandparents, hand in hand. That place, built by my grandfather´s hands and my grandmother´s love, built me.
As an adult, my grandmother instilled the lessons in me that I had seen in her since childhood; to be a doting and faithful wife, to put my children above anything, and that I was strong as nails and could power through the hard times.
She passed this on to each of her girls and it is as deep rooted as the trees on Debora Drive.
So much of who I am as a woman is because of her strength and resilience, and so much of the child that lives inside of me is because of her unwavering belief that I could move mountains.
I remember the snake behind the couch, I remember the butterfly by the birdbath, I remember making fudge, I remember sticking my arms through the beams in the dining room, I remember your Shalimar perfume, I remember stealing your slippers, I remember hiding in your closet, I remember putting on your blush, I remember being 27 and wasted at a Winterhawks game and coming to the house and you made me a bed, gave me your jammas, washed my hair, and tucked me in (one of my favs), I remember dancing with you and grandpa at my wedding and I remember you holding Waylon for the first time. A lifetime of memories you gave me in 35 years.
I´m so lucky to have had a love that hurts this much. So much of you made me who I am, and I will miss your hugs, kisses, phone calls, and holding your hand until I can do it again. I´m thankful for you, our memories, and those to come, and I love you deeper than the roots of the trees on Debora Drive. Until we meet again <3

My Mom,
How to write about a woman who meant everything? The words do not come easy. The loss is great and the pain is deep. Such a beautiful woman inside and out. She was strong yet sensitive, and loving. She was smart, capable, talented, funny, kind, and loyal.
She taught me more lessons than I can remember. Most importantly, I saw the kind of woman she was. I was always amazed how she seemed to know the right thing to do, at any given time.
The loyal and loving wife she was. My parents shared a long and beautiful marriage. They always came first in each other´s eyes. The warm and giving mom she was. My whole life feeling only love and support from such an incredible mom, was invaluable.
The hands on grandma she was always there to help out with babysitting, or to take kids vacationing with them. She was there cheering them on at sporting events, dance competitions or music concerts.
She started it all, she was the matriarch of our family and she lead with pride and grace. I simply wouldn´t be who I am without her being exactly who she was.
I will never forget the things she taught me and how loved she made me feel.
I miss my Mom. I miss her smile, her voice, her hugs, and I just miss her.

"What is lovely never dies, but passes into other loveliness." I read this quote and instantly thought of grandma. She was a strong, determined, beautiful woman. She was the strong glue that held everything together. I will miss playing Solitaire on a rainy day with her, and the irreplaceable Christmas fudge she would make. But most of all I´ll miss her laugh that seemed to brighten the darkest times and every time I see a hummingbird fly by I´ll think of her and how thankful I am to carry her memory on.

My Mom was my best friend. She taught me how to be a wife and mother. She had many words of wisdom, one I have fallen back on many many times.
"In an emergency, deal with the situation first, then fall apart".
I miss her so much, I know she couldn´t go on any longer without Dad.
They are together again.

I knew Marilyn from my time working at bills beef house. She always made sure she would come say hi to me and ask me how I'm doing. Bill and Marilyn both were very nice people. I think about them and the whole family quite often.

Marilyn was a wonderful person and we still have great memories of spending time with all the Maxwell's boating on the Columbia and at the Beef House. Wish all of you the best and strength during this difficult time.
