The 1985 Western novel Lonesome Dove was written by American author Larry McMurtry. Although it is the third book in the series chronologically, it is the first Lonesome Dove book to be released.

The plot centers on the connections of six former Texas Rangers and the adventures they had transporting a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana. The book examines themes of aging, mortality, unrequited love, and friendship while taking place in the latter years of the Old West.

A bestseller, the book was awarded the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was turned into a critically and commercially successful 1989 TV miniseries starring Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. Following Streets of Laredo (1993), McMurtry wrote two prequels, Dead Man’s Walk (1995), and Comanche Moon (1997), all of which were turned into television series.
