The official 2022 Emmy Awards nominations were announced by the Television Academy on Tuesday, and leading the pack in accolades are stars from binge-worthy shows, Succession, Ted Lasso, and The White Lotus. Other fan-favorites like Euphoria, Only Murders in the Building, Squid Game, Stranger Things, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Abbott Elementary also racked up an impressive amount of nods as well. One nominee who had a particularly good morning was none other than Sydney Sweeney, who not only snagged her first-ever Emmy nomination, but she got two- and she’s never, ever been happier.
The actress earned a spot in the category for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Cassie Howard in HBO’s Euphoria, as well as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus.
The actress posted her emotional reaction to the news, sharing a video calling her mom when the announcement was made. “What a morning! thank you so much to the @televisionacad for my emmy nominations! It’s an honor to know that both Olivia and Cassie have connected with so many. I’m so proud of both these shows and grateful to everybody that’s been apart of them. But most importantly mom, I love you, we did it through the ups and downs!🥺♥️🥰 thank you thank you!!”
She told People, she was in pre-production for Madame Webb when the news broke. “I was in the car and my phone started blowing up. I saw it and I called my mom. Then, I called my team, then my dad, then my brother. I was just … sitting in the car!”
She told the outlet she “wasn’t really expecting this. When I fell in love with acting, and when I fall in love with my characters, I don’t really think about the whole award aspect of it. I think there are so many incredibly actors that I was rooting for, so I wasn’t ready.”
Fellow Euphoria star Zendaya broke records in 2020, as the youngest woman to win the Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Drama series at 24 years old. She was only the second Black woman to snag the trophy for her category, after Viola Davis.
Nominated once again, the actress is making history (again) as the youngest female producer nominated. Zendaya took to Instagram to express her gratitude. “Making this show with this cast and crew of the most incredibly talented people that I get the privilege of learning from everyday has been a highlight of my life,” she said. “I’m so proud to work beside you and CONGRATULATIONS! I don’t have the words to express the love and gratitude I feel right now, all I can do is say thank you with all my heart! Thanks to everyone who connected with our show, it is an honor to share it with you.”
She continued, “Thank you @samlev00 for everything you do, this show is what it is because of your heart, and thank you to @labrinth @marcellrev @hbo @a24 for being the best creative collaborators. Lastly thank you to the @televisionacademy for this incredible acknowledgment. We out here Emmy nominated again y’all!!!”
Not the only record-breaker this year, Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson is making history as the first Black woman to be nominated across acting and writing in the outstanding comedy category. Her series landed a whopping seven nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series.
