Sources

This list merges two sources:

  1. A list of all knights from 1348 to 1939, adapted from Edmund H. Fellowes: The Knights of the Garter 1348-1939, which is a catalogue of the stall-plates in St. George's chapel, Windsor. Fellowes book lists the knights by stall, and that listing by stall can by found here with Fellowes' original annotations (many of which relate to the monuments visible in the chapel). I have rearranged it into a chronological listing and edited errors. Fellowes's sources are Beltz and Shaw. I chose this source because it was convenient for me to scan.

  2. A list of all knights from 1904 to the present, provided in April 1999 by Christopher Buyers in a post to the newsgroup alt.talk.royalty. I have edited his list for compatibility, paring down the styles. I have also modified it to conform with the listing in the most recent book on the Order, Begent and Chesshyre (1999).

Other lists of the knights of the Garter can be found:

  • Beltz, George Frederick: Memorials of the Order of the Garter, from its foundation to the present time. Including the history of the order; biographical notices of the knights in the reigns of Edward III. and Richard II., the chronological succession of the members. London, W. Pickering, 1841. [reprint: New York, AMS Press, 1973]
Includes a list of all knights from 1344 to 1841 on p. cxlix-ccxviii. Beltz's list is the same as that of Shaw (infra), except that he counts Edward III as no. 1 and the Black Prince as no. 2.

  • Shaw, William Arthur: The knights of England; a complete record from the earliest time to the present day of the knights of all the orders of chivalry in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of knights bachelors, by Wm. A. Shaw. Incorporating a complete list of knights bachelors dubbed in Ireland, compiled by G. D. Burtchaell. London, Printed and published for the Central chancery of the orders of knighthood, Sherratt and Hughes, 1906. [reprint: Baltimore, Geneological Publishing Co., 1970, 1995.]
Shaw and all others do not count Edward III, since he appointed 25 knights beside himself, the "founders".

  • Cokayne, George Edward: The Complete Peerage. 2nd ed., London, St. Catherine Press, 1910-59. vol. 2, appendix B.
Complete list up to 1911, derived independently from Beltz and Shaw. It has dates of nomination, investiture and installation, and indicates for which deceased member each appointed member replaced. It also lists degradations ands "missions" (sent to invest foreign nominees).

  • Holmes, Grace: The Order of the Garter, Its Knights and Stallplates 1348-1984. Windsor, 1984.

  • Begent, Peter J., and Hubert Chesshyre: The Most Noble Order of the Garter, 650 Years. London, Spink, 1999.
A list is in Appendix A, pp. 309-330, with names, dates of nomination and year of death. There is also list of degradations and removals p. 277-278.
