Marco Polo has been dubbed “SnapChat for old people” and has been gaining popularity for the past few years but is still considered a relatively unknown app.
For those that don’t know about it, Marco Polo is similar to SnapChat. Users refer to it as a “Video Walkie Talkie”, but how safe is the app?
One of the main security concerns is whether the app is doing enough to protect its younger users from online predators.
To use the app, users have to put in contact information and if that contact information is exposed, say on another social media platform, predators could find the most vulnerable and make contact with them.
Another security concern is that the data is only encrypted in transit.
This means that when the data is stored on Macro Polo’s servers, it is not encrypted. This opens up Marco Polo to attacks from hackers.
The company also keeps all of the user’s data on their servers indefinitely. Users have to actively delete their data in order for it to be removed from Marco Polo’s servers.
Lastly, there has been some buzz on Reddit that some Marco Polo users have seen the app send out text messages to all their contacts. User’s on the Reddit thread warn to not let Marco Polo have access to your contacts.
Marco Polo is still relatively new on the social media scene. But, with data breaches and security concerns occurring throughout social media apps, this will probably not be the end of Marco Polo’s battle for security.
