This has legs.

Toby Mammoth is caught in an avalanche in 1979, he's brought back in 2021, but time has moved on.

Think of a spoof version of Life on Mars, I think this really could be a cracking series, it seems to have such a relevance in today's climate.

Inoffensive, it pokes fun at 1970's attitudes, but it would be interesting to see what Mammoth could try to get away with.

This had me chuckling, it was well made, and well acted, Mike Bubbins did a cracking job here.

If you're a fan of Welsh humour, you'll enjoy this, I did, 7/10.

Interesting
murada196712 November 2021
Arriving largely without fanfare, I caught this show on iPlayer. Interesting show which plays to a large extent as a drama with the 'back from the dead' storyline largely in the back ground. Indeed you see nothing of Mammoth's return from the dead but catch up with him a few months later. The 'fish out of water' plot has been done many times before and this show offers no real new twists. However, it does have heart and offers a few laughs along the way. Hopefully it will get a series.

Mammoth

Mammoth looks like a pilot. Creator Mike Bubbins is a former PE Teacher, rugby player and a superfan of the 1970s.

He plays Tony Mammoth, caught in an avalanche in 1979 and thawed out. He is adjusting to life in 2021 where everyone thought he is dead.

Tony is back teaching at his old school. His old friends such as Roger now live in an old people's home. Tony even has a therapist trying to help him adjust to the 21st century.

Tony is a dinosaur or a woolly mammoth. He his in a world of mobile phones and health & safety.

This is basically Life on Mars in reverse. A comedy and not a crime drama. Also Tony is no Neanderthal. He might use Hai Karate aftershave but he comes to the aid of a school kid who cannot afford a sports kit. He makes the rest of the class play topless.

It might work as a series but you do wonder how long can Tony hold off from the benefits of modern life. I mean has no one told him just how much porn he can download on his mobile phone!

Very funny and well done
rorybigbear-0769415 November 2021
His character is brilliantly done - very funny and retro and lovingly out of touch and relatable (and cheesy) Let's be honest - everybody of a certain age had a gym teacher just like him lol

music is great - perfect placement - can't wait for more.

Tony Mammoth - Superstar
jnstanbridge1 December 2021
Mammoth stubbornly sticks to the values of the 70s and for that he must be applauded. Great comedy and fantastic references - Marathon bar anyone? Let's have some more.

Life on Mars? - pah!

Tidy effort fair play

I don't think many could capture the essence of the 1970's through the lens of a macho sexist PE teacher better than Mike Bubbins managed to achieve in this mini series. There were many genuine laugh out loud moments and some wonderful hillarious situations created by the writers. As someone who went to school in a Welsh comp in the 70's this was nostalgic and very funny. Bubbins seems a late bloomer and it is such a shame he wasn't recognised sooner because he has a rare and unique talent and is clearly a man who would have thrived had he been born several decades earlier. I hope this improves his profile and we see more of him in the future.

A mammoth waste of time
ShadeGrenade9 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
'Tony Mammoth' ( Mike Bubbins ) is a gym teacher who has been frozen since 1979 and has been thawed out in the 21st century. Unsurprisingly, he is baffled by everything he sees. It is hard to know where to start with this one. For one thing, Mammoth himself is very much a 21st century person's idea of what a 1979 man is like. A real person of that age would not be perplexed at the idea of British television having more than three channels; he'd be annoyed that the new ones all tend to be full of mindless garbage. Also, sexism, racism and homophobic attitudes are not exclusive to the 1970's; a quick trawl through the cesspit of hate that is social media will reveal that those unacceptable attitudes are still with us. The rebranding of Marathon chocolate as 'Snickers' would not be be much of a wrench to anyone who remembers the change-over to decimal currency. Mobile phones and home computers? People lived happily for years without those things. What you have never had, you don't miss. Mr. Bubbins cannot blame the writers for this farrago of nonsense; he wrote it and acted ( if that's the word ) in it. A failure twice over. This programme is nothing more than a feeble rehash of those annoying 'let's make fun of the past' shows that have been stinking up the airwaves for years now. It is time to say enough is enough and move on.

Bubbies shines in this future classic
thomasdwilford18 April 2024
The premise for this show is simple. PE teacher Tony Mammoth is frozen in ice during a school ski trip in the 70's and gets brought back to life in the modern day. Mammoth returns to his job as a PE teacher but it's full of fish out of water moments as he tries to get used to the new way of things. Bubbins (who also wrote the script) is wonderfully understated as the titular star and delivers the punch lines with little fanfare but lots of laughs. The supporting cast is brilliant, but this is very much Bubbins show and plays it to perfection. Currently there's only 3 episodes but I'm sure this'll go on to be a hit and get commissioned with a 2nd series.

Has potential as series
mjhowe-673863 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's slow going but a rather intriguing concept.

Would rather it was closer to the bone in regard to the values of the 1970's against today's values, but a great pilot non the less.

Hopefully it will get picked up as a series.

Non woke, Capri action
imdb-9208322 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A man, bought back from the dead, 40- odd years after dieieng on an avalanche. Trying to understand the LBTGQ, diverse life we live in now, which has changed so fast, our brains cannot adapt fast enough- do we have drugs, ADHD medications to stop the pain.

In a mk1 Capri, classic which must have cost thousands- I had a mk2, rear wheel drive, no power steering or leccy windows.

His fashion is spot on, the music/soundtrack follows the times.

It's a genius series, Life on Mars is similar, though that was a cop show. A precursor maybe?

A man struggling, from the past in the modern world. Funnier, and more immediate than the former, in the short time since the end of LoM the world has changed even more.

Good premise, badly executed
vnmjdcv20 April 2024
As a retired PE teacher I was able to relate to a lot of the material in this new offering from the BBC. I've actually worked with people like this in UK schools. Sporting dinosaurs straight out of the "Kes" playbook.

This comedy series has potential but it tries too hard to be nostalgic, sarcastic and obnoxious all at the same time. Tony Mammoth is a mix of David Brent and Mike Bassett, with outdated views on everything (women, cars, education, fashion etc). He's arrogant , rude and belittling to everyone else in the cast and this is where the comedy fails.

He's just not very likeable. It's all too cruel and silly at times, and the main character just carries on regardless, trampling over the cast whether they be family, old friends or work colleagues.

And let's not forget, to engage with this show, you have to blithely accept the "frozen in ice for 45 years" concept. I'm all for time travel and the supernatural but this is a bit daft.

I've watched 3 episodes and that's it for me. Mildly funny in places but by and large, a messy, toe curling cringefest.

Could have been good
hennesseypaul19 April 2024
When I saw this advertised I looked forward to it. Unfortunately it was complete garbage. I was expecting a comedy Drama, in a reversed Life on Mars style. Instead we got an hour of a mess of a plot, with juvenile humour, unlikable characters and predictable stories. The BBC had a real opportunity, here to show pathos, and have the main character coming to terms with life in the 21st century, it could have had the humour of only fools and horses, with the drama of Life on Mars. But the BBC don't seem to be interested in anything quality these days, and only want to give the public, any old rubbish.
