Inside Joe Biden’s family tree: Meet his wife, grandchildren, and more

The Biden family is no stranger to the White House — but President-elect Joe Biden’s brood has expanded since his days as second in command.

The former vice president, 77, had three children — Hunter, Beau and Naomi Biden — with his late wife, Neilia Hunter and a fourth, Ashley Biden, with his second wife Jill.

He’s also known as “pop” to a handful of grandchildren, who broke the news that he’d won the presidential election at his Wilmington, Delaware, home, telling him, “Pop! Pop! We won!” a source told NBC News.

Here’s a closer look at the Biden family tree — tragedies, scandals and all.

Biden married his first wife Neilia Hunter on Aug. 27, 1966. The college sweethearts went on to have three children — Beau, Hunter and Naomi.

Joe had just been elected senator in Delaware when tragedy struck on Dec. 18, 1972. His wife and children were out Christmas shopping when an accident involving a tractor trailer killed Neilia, 30, and Naomi, who had just turned 1 the month before. Hunter and Beau, who were nearly 3 and 4 at the time, were seriously injured.

The two boys spent months in the hospital, with Joe being sworn into the Senate there.

Three years after the fatal crash, Joe met Jill through his brother Frank when Jill was a student at the University of Delaware. The pair married on June 17, 1977 in New York City — but only after Joe proposed five times.

“I said, ‘Not yet. Not yet. Not yet.’ Because by that time, of course, I had fallen in love with the boys, and I really felt that this marriage had to work,” Jill recalled in a 2016 interview with Vogue. “Because they had lost their mom, and I couldn’t have them lose another mother. So I had to be 100 percent sure.”

In his 2007 memoir “Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics,” Joe recalled what meeting Jill was like.

“She gave me back my life,” he wrote. “She made me start to think my family might be whole again.”

Joe and Jill, 69, went on to have daughter Ashley, on June 8, 1981.

Joe’s eldest son, Beau followed his father’s footsteps with a career in public service, getting his law degree from Syracuse University, like his father, and eventually becoming a federal prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office.

He worked for two years as a partner at a law firm before being elected as the attorney general of Delaware, a position in which he served from 2006 to 2014.

Beau married wife Hallie in 2002, and the pair had two children, Natalie and Robert.

Beau also served in the Delaware Army National Guard and was deployed to Iraq in 2008. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

In 2010, Beau suffered a mild stroke and three years later, underwent surgery to remove a small lesion. That same year, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, which was in remission when he opted to run for governor of Delaware in the 2016 election, rather than seek a third term as attorney general.

He died of glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, on May 30, 2015 at the age of 46. After his death, Joe bowed out of a potential 2016 presidential run.

Born Feb. 4, 1970 — exactly a year and a day after Beau — Hunter’s professional life also mirrored his father’s though veered more toward the private sector.

He graduated from Georgetown University and Yale Law School and was appointed by President Bill Clinton to work as a director in the Department of Commerce from 1998 to 2001.

His resume also includes stints at a lobbying firm he co-founded, hedge fund agency Paradigm and MBNA Corporation, CNN reported. He was nominated by President George Bush in 2016 to serve on the Amtrak board of directors and, more notably, served as a board member of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian gas company.

But Hunter’s private life has garnered more headlines than his professional career.

The president-elect’s middle child has battled substance abuse issues all his life.

In 2014, he was discharged from the Navy Reserve after testing positive for cocaine and fought for decades with alcohol and drug addiction.

“Look, everybody faces pain,” he said in an interview last year with the New Yorker. “Everybody has trauma. There’s addiction in every family. I was in that darkness. I was in that tunnel — it’s a never-ending tunnel. You don’t get rid of it. You figure out how to deal with it.”

Hunter married Kathleen Buhle in 1993 and had three children with her: Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy. The pair split in 2015, with Kathleen filing for divorce that turned nasty — with her accusing Hunter of blowing money on hookers and drugs — in 2016.

A year later, Page Six exclusively reported that Hunter and his late brother’s widow, Hallie, had struck up a romance that had earned the blessing of Joe and Jill.

“We were sharing a very specific grief,” Hunter told the New Yorker. “I started to think of Hallie as the only person in my life who understood my loss.”

Hunter and Hallie went their separate ways in 2019.

It wasn’t long until Hunter found love again, this time with Melissa Cohen, 32, a South African with whom he tied the knot on May 16, 2019 just days after meeting.

Cohen, Hunter and their baby boy appeared on stage together in Delaware, where Joe delivered his acceptance speech for the presidency.

Hunter has a fifth child — a daughter — with Lunden Roberts, 29, a former stripper from Arkansas who gave birth in August 2018, when Hunter was still dating Hallie. A paternity test proved Hunter is the child’s father.

Joe’s second daughter, Ashley, 39, lives largely out of the public eye. She graduated from Tulane University with a major in cultural anthropology then went onto get her masters in social work at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice.

Ashley worked as the executive director of the Delaware Center for Justice in 2014, a group that focuses on criminal justice reform and founded the American-made clothing brand Livelihood after Beau died. The company sought to “supporting criminal justice reform, improving childhood education and ameliorating economic disparities,” according to the Washington Post.

In a 2017 interview with Glamour, Ashley credited her parents with her devotion to public service and activism.

“The passion started at a very young age … My dad is a lifelong public servant; my mom was a public-school teacher — it’s in my DNA,” she said.

Ashley is married to Dr. Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

The only daughter of Joe and his first wife Neilia, Naomi — known as Amy — died on Dec. 18, 1972, in the car crash that also killed her mother and left her two brothers seriously injured. She was 13 months old.

Natalie was born in 2004 with her brother Robert coming two years later to parents Beau and Hallie.

The two siblings appeared in a video at the Democratic National Convention in August reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Pop told us that this election would be totally different from any other election ever,” Natalie said at the time. “He was worried how it would affect his kids.”

Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy

Naomi, Hunter and Kathleen’s first-born daughter, is named after her late aunt. She graduated from Columbia Law School in May 2020, with her famous “pop” delivering the keynote address.

Naomi, 26, is outspoken on Twitter and frequently posts family photos on the platform, including the night Joe learned he’d won the presidency.

Finnegan is Naomi’s younger sister, born in 2000 and named after her great-grandmother, Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan Biden, USA Today reported. She attends the University of Pennsylvania.

Born in 2001, Maisy is the youngest of the trio and a close friend of Sasha Obama.

The most recent addition to the Biden clam is a baby boy born to Hunter and new wife Melissa on March 28.
