Oxford LTNs: Cameras installed but not yet activated

Cameras that scan number plates have been installed in low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs), but have not been activated yet.

The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will enforce restrictions at six Oxford locations so fines can be sent to drivers.

Oxfordshire County Council said the cameras would be switched on in the middle of May.

It previously said it would be "from the week beginning 29 April".

A new statement said: "The cameras have been successfully installed and we are now ensuring the signage is complete before we go live."

LTNs were set up to prevent traffic taking shortcuts through residential areas, and make streets safer for walking and cycling, though critics say businesses have been negatively impacted.

Since they were introduced in 2022 there have been protests, and bollards have been run over, burned or stolen.

The new cameras work by recording the license plate of vehicles passing through restricted areas.

Private motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds, are not be permitted to use the routes, and penalty charges will be sent out if they do.

During emergency incidents the cameras can be switched off to enable traffic to be diverted.

Emergency, waste, and postal service vehicles, along with taxi and private hire vehicles, are exempt from the restrictions.

Planters remain at the sides of the roads at all the locations, though the bollards have been removed.

Bill Cotton, corporate director for environment and place, previously said: "The decision to replace six closure points with ANPR cameras follows public consultations and close engagement with the emergency services.

"ANPR cameras will allow emergency service and other essential vehicles to travel through these six points.

"During unexpected incidents we may also have more flexibility to arrange traffic diversions."

There are three LTNs in Cowley, located on Crescent Road, Littlehay Road, and Littlemore Road.

Buses are exempt from being charged for passing the Littlemore Road camera.

The LTNs in east Oxford are at Divinity Road, James Street, and Magdalen Road.
