Geography

Luxembourg is a landlocked country in the west of Central Europe. The land has a total area of 2,590 km² (1,000 mi²). This land area is about 2.0 times the size of Los Angeles. Luxembourg is thus one of the smallest countries in Europe by area and ranked 179th worldwide. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (92%) belongs to the urban population. Every fifth inhabitant lives in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg is comparatively low at an average elevation of 325 meters above sea level. The highest elevation in the country (Kneiff) is 560 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the three neighboring countries Belgium, France and Germany. The distance between New York City and the Capital Luxembourg is about 6,060 km (3,766 mi).

Climate in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has a temperate continental climate. Only the Ardennes in the north of the country have a slightly cooler and more humid climate than the south. Summers are mild to warm, with average temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Winters are generally mild, with temperatures around freezing, and precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year. The climate is largely due to its location in the interior of Europe. Nevertheless, Atlantic winds have a cooling influence, making the summers and winters very temperate.
