Lizzo, one of the fastest-growing names in music, made her Saturday Night Live musical debut last night. She performed energetic and flawless renditions of her originals “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell”.

Lizzo’s ability to command a stage and engage audiences was on full display. The Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter, rapper, and flutist took the stage to impress the studio audience and viewers around the world following an introduction by Eddie Murphy, who hosted the show for the first time in 35 years.

She kicked off her SNL appearance with a powerful take on “Truth Hurts” while backed by a full band during the confident and passionate performance. The superstar refused to pull any punches, performing as if she was playing to a sold-out arena despite being in an intimate television studio. Phish fans may also have recognized a familiar face during the performance: Celisse Henderson, one of the vocalists in Trey Anastasio‘s Ghosts of the Forest band, played guitar for Lizzo for the performance.

Lizzo then treated fans to a version of “Good as Hell”, the lead single from her 2016 Coconut Oil EP, for part two of her SNL appearance. This performance highlighted themes of self-esteem and pridefulness. As the curtains opened for Lizzo and her holiday-themed set, she made a point to remind fans to “be kind to one another, but most importantly, be good to [themselves]”.

“Good as Hell” allowed Lizzo to wow fans with her wide vocal range and dancing ability, which were shown-off during a remix of Trans-Siberian Orchestra‘s “Carol of the Bells”.
