There is something you may not know, and you may not know that you don't know it.
James Taylor got his big break when he was signed by The Beatles to Apple Records.
The song that got him signed by George Harrison and Paul McCartney was 'Something in the way she moves.' Interestingly the opening line of George Harrison's song Something is 'Something in the way she moves.'
Live at the Troubadour marks a full circle moment for artists King and Taylor whose musical careers as artists have been inextricably intertwined. When King heard Carole King perform 'You've Got a Friend' at the Troubadour in 1970, he was instantly smitten by the song, and when he later worked with her on Tapestry, she gave him permission to release a single of the song, ensuring a number one hit for him, the biggest hit of his career.
As you consider that it's almost 40 years, it's quite amazing to get some of the original Tapestry musicians such as Danny Kortchmar, and Leland Sklar on this cd/dvd. In additon drummer Chris Kunkel played drums on Fire and Rain.
With this richness of musical talent, as you watch the cameras zoom in closer and tighter than you can imagine, you gain a sense of the intimacy of the Troubadour, you gain a fresh appreciation of these artists, and these classics. You probably heard many most of these songs before, but may not have experienced these artists combining quite like this before now, with all these classic songs, and that's enough to take you all the way back, the further back you go, the more you want to reexperience it over and over.
Watching the dvd, it's a smaller venue than you might have imagined, and the cameramen have to tread carefully to not be intrusive, sometimes a guitarists arm might block a view of Carole King.
I particularly liked their fresh takes on these classics, particularly It's Too Late, and So Far Away, and Carolina in my mind.
I don't know if you've ever been up on the roof, watching your cares and woes drift right into space, if you have not you can probably imagine what it's like to be above the hustling crowd driting away, and The Drifters could definitely appreciate the word drift being used in a song that they might record, written by a lyrical genius such as Gerry Goffin. And you can allow yourself to drift away, when you get the cd and dvd. I know I like to drift all the way back to the time when these songs were new, and wonder what it would have been like to have been at the Troubadour all those years ago, to just be there. Well, this is the next best thing to being there.
I think you'll love it, and I wonder if you found this review helpful. If so, you may also enjoy the The Essential Carole King which in addition to her greatest songs as a recording artist, has many of the hit versions of the Goffin King songs done by original artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Byrds, The Drifters and The Monkees. So, by now you can click and drift away to your heart's content. I think you'll love it.
I don't believe that James Taylor and Carole King had recorded a full album together before this event. What took them so long?! I am grateful that they did finally give us this experience, singing favorites from both, alternating from one of Jame's songs to one of Carole's seamlessly, it all flows together so well that you could imagine they had wrote the music together and performed it together for all of these years.
The event of this concert was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the venue, The Troubadoor in West Hollywood, recorded in November of 2007. The concert was all the more significant since Taylor and King had played together at the Troubadoor for the first time, in November of 1970.
The album is also interspersed with brief comments from them both, remarking on the music and their careers both together and separately.
King and Taylor are accompanied by three of the personnel who had been there back in 1970: Danny Kortchmar – guitar, Leland Sklar – bass guitar, and Russ Kunkel – drums.
Thoroughly enjoyable and a necessary part of my collection.
The Troubadour is a small intimate venue, which was the perfect setting for two old friends to get together, tell a few short stories, and sing some favorite songs. Carole King was glowing, and spent much of the concert seated at the piano. James Taylor was predictably mellow. They both sounded pretty darn good!
The video seemed almost like it was a couple of guys with a camcorder - with fans' heads sometimes getting in the way, some shots where they were a bit late and maybe didn't catch what they were aiming for, & a few oddly chosen close-ups of the fans. Those little imperfections, planned or otherwise, fit the mood of the concert quite nicely.
There aren't any extras on the DVD. James Taylor & Carole King (mostly James) have a brief discussion (audio only while scenes of the club before the concert are shown) prior to the actual concert footage. It seemed that the DVD ended rather abruptly. Maybe that's because I was hoping for a bit of post-concert discussion.
I listened to the CD, but not closely. It seemed that all the audio from the DVD were on the CD except for the opening discussion.
If you are forever locked in this mode as I am - you absolutely need to purchase this cd/dvd combo. Just do it. I have listened to the DVD a hundred times. I never tire of it. These great artists have put it all together to take us back to that magical time in our history. Do them the honor of sharing it with them. Imagine getting Carole out of retirement to do this! The band is fantastic - originals. Imagine getting these guys together. All of them legendary. And more importantly - they stuck with us all these years - gave their hearts and souls to us. Their songs became our personal anthems and they understand that. Every one of us has special meaning attached to so many of their songs - and as I say - they understand that. I digress.
This is a must have CD/DVD - trust me.
