There was so much to see here. The lighthouse was fascinating, the other buildings well kept and the gardens were gorgeous!
A beautiful place to relax. History markers are out year round. When the light house museum is open you can learn even more about the light house and it's history, plus you can climb to the top of the lighthouse. Great vista year round. Summer concerts including regulars such as Gap Mangoine, a steel drum band, and local favorites The Dady Brothers.
What a cool place. We were greeted by the Museum director and he gave us an in depth history of the light house, its artifacts and everything about its history. He also was a wealth of knowledge on the history of the area and when the British were trying to invade. Seriously he is like a walking encyclopedia. We also got to climb up the 51 stairs to the top. It was awesome. We were so impressed we joined up and I bought a jacket. Please stop in and learn the history of this area.
We were, I admit, very lucky to catch Joseph on a slow day. What a mine of information on all sorts of subjects. We discussed some of the battle of 1812, then the absurdities of the geology of the area, the size of the lake, what the Brits dislike and the USA's diet etc... Anyway it was 110 degrees F in the top of the lighthouse and I earned my "I climbed the tower" sticker. The answer is 104!
We took a morning picnic on the public garden right beside the Museum at the site of the original lighthouse. Lovely day on the shore of Lake Ontario watching the yachts and water activities. Visited the Museum shop, but no time for entering the Museum itself. The grounds are very well kept b volunteers.
This old lighthouse on the south bank of Lake Ontario is situated in the small village of Sodus Point. Most of the warm weather season this village is bustling. The lighthouse museum has great displays of how the light keeper lived and a lot of nautical information, charts, and photos. When we were there, a local WWII veteran was selling his memoir. It was an interesting read. There is plenty of parking. The view from the top, up the spiral stairs, is magnificent.
