Yes, we're talking about Lethal Weapon 5, even though, for a while, it seemed like the delayed-sequel / reboot train was slowing down when both Charlie's Angels and Terminator: Dark Fate underperformed at the box office.

However, the success of Bad Boys 3 has proven that the lure of nostalgia is sometimes very powerful (plus, it was good). Where does that leave the Lethal Weapon franchise? Probably in a good spot.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming, at some point, Lethal Weapon 5.

Lethal Weapon 5 cast: Will Danny and Mel return?

According to Lethal Weapon producer Dan Lin, both Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs are returning – that's right, Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are back. Also returning is director Richard Donner, who helmed all four previous Lethal Weapon movies.

Lin said: "The original cast is coming back. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it's about the script." But whether any other familiar faces, like Rene Russo, Chris Rock or Joe Pesci, will return remains to be seen.

The fact that Murtaugh is even still a cop is beyond hilarious, given his catchphrase from the first movie was: "I'm too old for this shit." Apparently not!

Lethal Weapon 5 plot: Who's done bad now?

We have no idea what the story is, other than "the story itself is very personal to him [director Richard Donner], and it's just amazing". Back in 2017, series creator and controversial guy Shane Black had written a 62-page treatment for the fivequel.

Back in 2017, however, Donner told Maltin on Movies that Lethal Weapon 5 was being penned by "a wonderful writer named Channing Gibson, who wrote 4 for me." He added: "We have a really great story. It is dark, but I wanted to end it on an emotional note, and I don't think it's gonna happen. It's heartbreaking."

This still doesn't give us much to go on in terms of where the officers are now – hopefully, they're actually retired.

Given the fact that Gibson is 'controversial' to say the least, following accusations of misogyny, anti-Semitism and homophobia (he's reformed, apparently...), it's difficult to have high hopes for a film that would restore his popularity (though Lethal Weapon 5 is hardly the first to welcome him back into the fold).

Separate to the stars' personal lives, critics in the 1990s were already unhappy with the characterisation. The LA Times described Murtagh as a 'sexless character from a sitcom'. Clearly, Lethal Weapon 5 has a big task ahead of itself if it wants to be successful.

Donner also revealed the title would be Lethal Finale – but then again, this was before Warner Bros had officially greenlit the picture, so much could have changed.

Lethal Weapon 5 release date: When is it out?

Your guess is as good as ours on this one. The movie has been in discussion for years, with blame for delays being laid at the studio's feet. Now it is in active development, but a release date – or trailer, for that matter – are a long way off.

For now, you can purchase the Lethal Weapon movies on Amazon if you're really desperate for some buddy cop action.
