Who else is pumped for Ford Vs Ferrari!!?
It's an amazing movie. I was lucky enough to watch it at the international premiere here in Toronto @ TIFF.
I BLEW MY CHANCE! I ran in to John Bernthal at the corner of King & Yonge and totally forgot he's Lee Iacocca. Instead of being excited for the movie, I just gave him directions to lunch.
He most likely appreciated that you treated him like you would anybody else! ❤️
"Hi I'm John Bernthal, you may know me from such film and television productions as Ford Vs Ferrari and the Punisher..."
"SUBWAY IS RIGHT BEHIND YOU!"
Nice.
A story is a story! Ahah

Did they make Ford out to be some plucky underdog or do they acknowledge the reality that Ferrari was a tiny company that just wanted to focus on racing?
They never really touched much about the size of companies. It was more so about the character struggles of everyone involved and the reason why Ford wanted to beat Ferrari so bad.
I think that's the best way to describe it without giving too much away. TBH not a lot of racing actually happens on screen.
There was the line: "Ferrari make X amount of cars per decade. We make that many. Each day."
Yeah they definitely play on Ford being a massive conglomerate and Ferrari being a little, bespoke manufacturer all through the movie.
Hell, several of the insults lobbed at the Deuce focus around that dynamic.
There's the entire line about the Ford factory making 3 of out ever 5 of a certain kind of bomber during the war.
They definitely get into it.
Probably since while on a company scale ford was massive in comparison, but this is about the racing which Ferrari dominated in before the Ford GT. But the trailer makes Henry Ford 2 look like a douche a bit.
Henry Ford 2 was a douche by all accounts. He's the reason for such fantastic cars as the pinto and Mustang II. Everything I've ever heard has him in direct contention with anyone who ever wanted to do anything at Ford. Hell, the only reason the GT40 got made was because he couldn't stand the idea that his family's name wasn't seen at the pinnacle of racing.
The Mustang II was the right car at the right time. It only gets a bad rap in a modern context.
I dunno, apparently everyone shit on the car back then as well according to my old man. He had one and built one too and still thinks its an awful car so take that for what it's worth.
He's the reason for such fantastic cars as the pinto and Mustang II.
How dare you insult the man who bestowed the Pinto and Mustang II onto us?!?!
Mods, please ban this rapscallion! Ban him I say!!
What's the problem with the Mustang II?
People scoff, but I always say a Mustang II w/ a coyote swap would be one hell of a sleeper!
There was a kid in a Mustang club I was in a few years back that had swapped in a FRPP 302 + T5 into a plane jane Maverick. Kid broke a lot of hearts w/ that car!v
It was built at the time when Detroit was trying to figure out how to survive during the early 70's oil embargo and newly legislated smog restraints. The Mustang II was built on a Pinto platform, had terrible quality issues, and was extremely underpowered. The base model was an inline 4 cyl. rated at 88hp and the top of the line King Cobra model with the 302 V8 only churned out 139hp. Ford had lost their way in the late 60s and very early 70s, building larger and larger Mustangs. This was an attempt to return to the original, smaller, lighter concept in hopes to compete with the Toyota Celica. What they succeeded at, however, was screwing up the proportions and just making it ugly.
He ran off Lee Iacocca who saved his rival, I'd say he earned the douche title.
Hell, the only reason the GT40 got made was because he couldn't stand the idea that his family's name wasn't seen at the pinnacle of racing.
That and Enzo Ferrari bailing at the last minute at Ford acquiring them.
Just a petty rich guy pissing off another petty rich guy really.
It’s been years, but when I was a kid one of the first books I read was about Enzo Ferrari. Part of it discussed the Ford rivalry. Single source, but my impression is Ferrari was the last word in racing at that time. Ford may be commercial divinity, but Ferrari owned the track for decades and Old Man Enzo wasn’t shy about telling you . So with Ford vs Ferrari it was Ego vs Ego as it were. GM sat it out because of their insane corporate racing ban. We will never know what an unleashed Zora Arkus Duntov could have done against Ford and Ferrari.
That timeline had a mid engine Corvette by 1968

I wonder why Toyota doesn't dominate racing if it's all about volume...
they did pretty good on lmp1, finally
i just implied that ford had a lot of resources, same with toyota of course
Ford was an underdog though
Eh
They were an underdog in the sense that compared to Ferrari, they had essentially no experience in racing.
But in terms of resources available, Ford was absolutely not an underdog.
Good to hear
As did all car companies under the control of Nazj Germany
I was there as well. It was amazing indeed. I'm pumped to watch it again with my friends.
Please tell me if it is family friendly my 7 year old is obsessed with the GT. I would really love to take him to this.
Unsure of the rating now. I would be leaning towards no...
Fuck Christian Bale, he is a piece of shit. After the way he scream at his film crew nobody should support his films.
The book is amazing too! I suggest starting with that as it delves into the history and details or the whole rivalry.
Is the book you're referring to Go like Hell, or is there another one?
My top 3 auto enthusiast books include the above, Adrian Newey's How to build a car, and Priestley's The Mechanic.
Reading the three of them makes it tough to remain a defendant Ferrari fan however lol.
Yep, thats the one Enzo Ferrari was definitely a tough guy to like, but all titans of industry have similar rough edges (not that I'm defending any of them).
Yeah agreed, I actually have little against Enzo himself- although he was a bit of a bad guy he had a tough life. Rather I have a bone to pick with Ferrari management overall throughout motorsport (particularly F1). Their management/leadership is a poisonous, nepotistic, arrogant shit show of an operation IMO.
The whole history of F1 from the 50s-70s is pretty awful from an organizational and safety perspective. Drivers were disposable, track safety measures were a joke, etc. F1 is still kind of a mess but at least its a safer mess :-)
Yeah safety wise things have gotten much better, South African 78(?) GP is a shocking reminder of how bad things can be. While the recent F2 death was a tragedy, it's good how uncommon these types of things are these days.
But being a longtime Ferrari F1 fan I am just sick of how every driver they bring in (last 3-4 have been very fast, or proven WDCs) and eventually fail is given all the blame or forced out of Ferrari a la Schumacher or Raikkonen.
Sorry for the rant, mostly I just hate Luca Montezmolo and what he did to a winning team back in the 00s.
Aye, track safety was nonexistent. Still saddens me that the best driver the sport has ever seen died so young, preventing him from winning so many titles. And for a bloody F2 race...
My mans Dragoni stirring the pot...
Holy crap that link. Thanks
The Limit: Life and Death on the 1961 Grand Prix Circuit is a great read on Phil Hill, Ken Miles, and the other drivers of the era. It delves into the Ford vs Ferrari duel as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0446554731/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AcsEDb20YFGKQ
I'll have to look up "Go like Hell", but the other two you mentioned are on on my Amazon wishlist . I also have "The Chariot Makers" by Steve Matchett on my list as well.
The 24 hr war documentary by Adam Corolla is also damn good.
For sure. It's on Prime for anyone wondering. I thought he did a great job on it.
Yep, had just finished reading the Go Like Hell, then heard about this movie. I'll be in line.
Anybody else bothered that the song used for this trailer was released in 1969, and Ford beat Ferrari at Lemans in 1966?
side note, extremely pumped for the movie.
Literally unwatchable.
Same, I'm not even sure if the actors were even born by then. How am I supposed to get into the story when such details were overlooked.
I fully expect the movie theaters to have a time machine available so I could literally go back to 1966, and enjoy the movie properly. If not, then what the hell?
The movie? Are you sure? Looks decent.
[removed]
Rush was pretty amazing tbf.
How’s the soundtrack?
Well....I wasn't until now
I wonder if this song is actually in the movie or if it's just something the trailer people came up with.
As oppose to a song that predates the events?
I feel like a song that comes after fits well, especially since 2-3 years is still the same time period.
Right. Its a chronological error, all of the scenes shown in the trailer predate ford beating Ferrari in lemans in 1966, since the aforementioned rolling stones song was released in 1969 it wouldn't have been possible for that song to be played during any of these scenes.
This also makes movies designed to be placed in the past hard for me to enjoy because these errors happen so frequently. I am hoping its just a mistake of the trailer and doesnt set a theme for the entire movie, especially since I am so invested in Ford history.
A song that predated the events could have been heard during some of these scenes since it would have already been produced, rather than one that hadnt happened yet.
The lack of any real physical likeness of Damon and Bernthal to Shelby and Iacocca seems to indicate they expect to carry it solely on their performances. I'm expecting big things.
I would much rather have a great actor portray someone than a good or decent actor who looks similar to the real person personally.
I agree. I'm not sure why that's being downvoted.
No clue, reddit is mysterious.
Agreed, I think the best portrayals of real life figures are the ones where you cast someone with the right acting chops.
As long as that actor's race/ethnicity is similar enough to the character (s)he is portraying, then I'm not complaining.
I don't think a high majority of the viewers will even know what Shelby it Iacocca look like
For reference: Iacocca in 1965, Shelby in 1966
Those are cool cars, wonder if they were any good when they came out
Damon’s not too far off from Shelby tbh.
[removed]
My level of respect for Matt Damon as an actor did a complete 180 after The Martian.
I am sure he will totally pull it off, Bernthal on the other hand though...
Bernthal on the other hand though...
I absolutely love the guy, I'm sure he'll come through with a great performance.
Let's be real, how many people can pick these two out of a lineup. It isn't like they are playing an iconic historical figure that everyone is also used to seeing.
*Sniff* they're iconic to me...
I'd say Shelby's likeness is fairly well-known among this film's target audience; Iacocca's less so. He's the kinda guy you'd think was born an old man.
I love these guys, this story, read the book and watched the documentary and still would have trouble picking them out. I should be better but for some reason they don't stick.
movie glorifying a mega international corporation effort to humiliate individually owned company in their small niche because the owner only refused to give them absolute control of his company racing operation, ford the true underdog with their bottomless liquid cash well!
Hear bloody hear!
The muricans NEED to feel like the underdog for some reason.
Let's be real, they were for racing. If Toyota said they were starting an F1 team to beat Mercedes and Ferrari even if they could out spend both they would be under dogs.
Well, they could if they spend $5billion and just hired the best talent from the other teams, plus had the car made in the UK or italy.
Which is basically what Ford did: Spend much more than all other teams combined and had the car made externally.
Not sure why you were downvoted. Toyota went through some horrific experiences to win at La Sarthe. Honda couldn't make F1 work initially. Not every manufacturer who knows how to build cars knows how to make racing pay off.
Are you trying to say that Toyota is an American company?
Ironically, Ford is now swimming in debt and their credit rating has just been downgraded to junk status by the ratings agencies, while Ferrari is more flush with cash than they have ever been with long wait lists for most of their production models. Always interesting how the tides turn.
what tides? ford is an ocean while ferrari is barely a lake, they aren't in the same league!! and ford appears to be the only major motor industry that is changing to the current market.
Yes, clearly Ford is the much bigger company. Ferrari is an exotic car maker that will never match Ford in production numbers, nor will it want to. My comment was responding to how you referred to Ford as the “bottomless liquid cash well”. If you look at the two companies’ balance sheets, you will see that Ford is drowning in debt, which is a far cry from being a bottomless liquid cash well.
debt is not that bad and its only a problem if you fail behind on it, in fact the world economy runs on debt. by your logic estonia is in richer than japan because it has little to no debt while japan is swimming in it.
I wouldn’t waste time arguing with someone who doesn’t understand basic economics
Isn't this also a documentary on Netflix or Amazon Prime possibly?
Edit: Yes. Here it is: https://www.amazon.com/24-Hour-War-AJ-Baime/dp/B01MZWZ3N4
Found what I'm doing on my commute home...
Phone on the dash watching Netflix and crashing and dying?
Regrettably, I am not a train conductor so I don't think it's particularly likely I'll crash the train I commute on.
Lol I always forget that public transportation is a thing...
[removed]
What now?
Also like even if you were, the train goes where it goes. Just gotta make sure there's nothing on the track
I have seen this in action.
Yea, a story of a friend of a friend did that, except she put it over her fuel gauge and ran out of gas on the interstate.
Highly recommend the doc, lots of original footage and interviews.
I've seen this! Absolutely fascinating
Sweet baby Jesus. I didn’t even know this movie was in the works! When does it come out?! This looks legendary!
November!!!
I was interested at first because I loved "The 24 Hour War", but I feel they may have gone too silly for me with this film.
They have not. It's a great movie with awesome moments. The theater erupted in laughter/applauds on so many occasions. That's not something that typically happens up here in Toronto.
God, I wish america were like that. Can't watch a movie at my local theater without the entire audience audibly reacting to every single thing that happens on screen.
I'm sorry, that sounds... Awful
"Damn Americans and their...
[shuffles cards]
Emotional responses to things they enjoy."
What? I didn't even know this was coming out. CAR FRIENDS... ASSEMBLLLLE
Comes out a couple days before my 31st. My girlfriend has already planned for us to go see it on my birthday.
I can't wait to back to back this with Rush on Sunday afternoons.
God knows I am, me and my friend are gonna watch it as soon as it comes out
I plan on buying like 10 tickets and offering them to friends/fam or whoever wants to go that day just cause I love this story so much and want others to experience this!
Yes, but couldn’t they come up with a better name for the film?
It's a shame, Ford should've accepted enzo's offer instead of partnering with Shelby, I hate the mustsang
[removed]
I dokt like the bodies, they look awful to me
Of course I'm not a fan of anything domestic though
This guy
And this guy!
[removed]
In general, yes, but I'd be a lot more excited if A.J. Baime hadn't somehow gotten cut out of the deal.
I so am. I love the actors and have watched documentaries on it. One of my favorite car world stories. Also from the fact that the US team gave up after Ferrari started winning again and left LeMans a couple of years after their wins with their tails between their legs. I love Ferrari.
Christian Bale? One of my favorite actors.... Hell Yeah!
YE BOI
This gonna be good!
More pumped for Corvette C8 vs Ferrari
Scorsese intensifies
I am just so thrilled this was past the point of no return to not get murdered by Disney's acquisition. So excited for this. I get to see it at the Mill Valley film festival, and I'm excited to get non car people into the realm of understanding why it's so special, and our history is important.
Totally! Just finished the book "Go Like Hell." I was thinking about dropping a post on this sub but I'm glad you did! We finally have a real car movie about real cars rather than insanely impossible stunts and flying through Dubai buildings.
The duel of the century on france's finest stage, sounds amazing. Pls tell me they have some good period correct soundtrack (loved gimmie shelter in the trailer)
I'm wondering where this came out of all the sudden ? Like who went and said, "let's do this movie" Seems pretty interesting though
Road and track posted about it being in the works a long time ago, and then posted this trailer on facebook. Its the only place ive seen anything about
Aren’t the reviews pretty terrible?
73 on Metacritic is hardly terrible.
Of course.
What are we? Barbarians? Who couldn't be excited for this?
I cant wait for that to come out!!!
[removed]
Ooooooooohhhhh BABY this is gonna be GOOD!

Oh goody
Not sure the actual date but November
No
Matt Damon as the one and only Carroll Shelby. Fuckin A.
yes

How have I not seen this?!
Because it hasn't been released yet?
I meant the trailers for it
Ah that makes more sense
Honestly, I don't think I have seen a single trailer on TV. I first heard about it hear a few months ago.
I’m flowing with patriotic juices.
We all know how it ends but it's the story of how it gets there that's thrilling.
If the FIA stewards have anything to do with this, then it’s a definite Ferrari win (this is a joke from the Monza F1 gp)
If it was going to be a penalty for Leclerc it should've been a penalty for Max in Austria. Let them race, they didn't even make contact
Like for Vettel? We can compare plenty of races, the point is that this is what leads to it becoming a much more dangerous sport. At those speeds, they have rules for a reason, regardless of who your favorite team is
No when Max rammed Leclerc off the road at turn 3 in Austria this year for the win
I already saw the documentary on amazon prime but will watch it.
One of the great stories in racing (and american pride for that matter in a time of war and just bad shit all together) so I'm glad people are going to be able to enjoy this who maybe dont know as much about the history! Gunna be great to tie it into why the new ford gt exists as well
Oh yeah, a mega corp with suitcases full of cash trying to strong arm a guy out of his little racing car operation during a company sale is inspiring for Americans?
[removed]
Chill dude, it's the message of beating someone at their own game. Sure you could swing it as a strong arm, but Ferrari screwed ford over so ford decided to give it right back to em and win (which they did). The world got some incredible tech and we got an incredible story... if ur gunna shaft someone make sure they cant hit you back twice as hard.
As well as the story of the driver and pure insanity of it all and with the buildup of shelby it's just a crazy event if you wanna take the (car politics? Idk what u could call ur anger) out of it, you could enjoy that at least
Seems like you're the one getting worked up buddy.
Sorry if I sounded like that, didnt mean to come off that way. Just intrested in why you framed it that way cuz I'd like to understand why you seem so burnt on this
Me because fuck ferrari
Not me. These days, people hardly have enough money to go to the movies. The economy has been horribly distorted.
The economy is booming and has been for quite some time. If you can't afford a movie ticket, that's on you, and not the economy
Here a ticket costs like 6 dollars...
Tickets are like $10-$20 depending on if you want something like IMAX or just a normal screening.
