Champion release updates, cast, synopsis, filming, and more

Get ready because Netflix acquired rights to stream the upcoming British TV drama, Champion!

The upcoming series, co-produced by Netflix and BBC One, is a remnant of the Netflix original titles Rebelde and Julie and the Phantoms in that it has just as much drama as the 2022 Spanish series but also has the intoxicating lyrical ability as the latter musical series. So if you’ve been looking for a new show to become a fan of, Champion is the one to keep an eye out for.

Here’s everything we know so far about the musical drama.

Champion release updates

Currently, we do not have a release date for the series, as it is still in the early stages of production. However, we’re hoping we can see the show no later than Winter 2022 or Spring 2023.

Champion cast

Shadow and Bone actress Genesis Lynea is featured in this new title. Alongside her are Small Axe‘s Francis Lovehall, Surf Therapy star Kerim Hassan, Doctors actress Rachel Adedeji, Body of Water‘s Adeyinka Akinrinade, and many more actors and actresses where that came from.

The roles of each star are unknown at the moment. Hopefully, we will know more later in the year.

Champion synopsis

Following his prison release, Bosco Champion wants to dive into the music industry to turn over a new leaf. Needless to say, doing so comes with many challenges, as the United Kingdom’s rap world is already over-saturated with endless talent. Even still, he sets out to become the best of the best. That is until he finds out that his sister also has big dreams of becoming a superstar and will also do whatever it takes to be number one.

The bond between siblings is tested, putting into question if blood is really thicker than water. The answer will be revealed soon enough, but until then, see the full synopsis for Champion (via Variety) below:

"The music-infused “Champion” tells the explosive story of what happens when fame collides with family. The show follows rap sensation Bosco Champion, who is home from prison, and ready to dominate the music industry. But when his dutiful younger sister Vita’s own talent is discovered by Bosco’s rival, Bulla, she steps out of her brother’s shadow to become a performer in her own right, setting the Champion siblings against one another and tearing apart the whole family in the process."

Production companies Balloon Entertainment and All3Media (supported by New Pictures) serve as our co-producers for this title. Currently, these companies are hard at work filming the show in the United Kingdom, so it’ll be quite some time before we receive any first-look photos and/or teaser trailers. We’re sure it’ll be worth the wait, though, especially because Danielle Scott-Haughton, Imogen O’Sullivan, and Skins co-creator Bryan Elsley are just a few of the many executive producers leading the charge!
