Product Description

CD debut of the long-sought-after soundtrack! If you're not Valley material, the tracks below will tune you in!

Amazon.com

Martha Coolidge's 1983 directorial debut--based loosely on the Frank (and Moon) Zappa (who weren't involved with the film) novelty hit of the previous year--carried a budget so low that it didn't even generate a soundtrack album when it was released. Loosely based on the same themes as Romeo and Juliet, (with a young Nicolas Cage as a Hollywood homeboy Montague) Valley Girl's producers were also savvy enough to tap into LA radio outlet KROQ's pioneering "Rock of the 80s" format. Rhino's unofficial soundtrack release captures much of the spunky essence of KROQ's playlist--three tracks by LA's great Plimsouls (including their biggest hit "A Million Miles Away"), some novelty hits (Josie Cotton's "Johnny Are You Queer, "Jukebox" by the flirts, Felony's "The Fanatic")--and fondly recalls an era when rock's fun quotient hadn't yet been tattooed and pierced into oblivion. --Jerry McCulley

Listened to entire cd before writing a review. Case and insert was noticeably slightly used but barely at all. Each song was perfect which is what counts. Will definitely use for a party this summer. So glad I found this!!

I love this soundtrack. Every song perfectly matches the movie. A lot of hard to find songs like "She talks in Stereo" by Gary Myrick & "Eyes of a Stranger" by Payola & my ultimate favorite "The Fanatic" by Felony. I never get tired of listening to this cd. The movie and soundtrack are one of the 80's classic combinations. I have to stop whatever I am doing to watch the movie when it's on cable. I know this probably sounds lame, but i grew up in the 80's and this movie brings back some great memories. I like totally recommend this soundtrack to anyone who wants to listen to some classic 80's music or if you want to go back to memory lane.

This movie soundtrack always reminds me of my life I once had living in San Diego in the 80s. It was a wonderful time to live in the prettiest city in America. Love Love Love this CD. Unfortunately not all of the songs are on this one. Thank You!

This CD , and the accompanying "more music form the soundtrack Valley Girl" perfectly encapsulate a innocent time gone by. Really one of the best movie soundtracks ever, not only for the quality and comprehensiveness of the collection, but also because you can't listen to a single song without remembering the scene in the movie in which it was used. Really anyone who likes these two CD's needs to also purchase the "Valley girl" DVD. Together they are a "must have" for anyone who lived that time or anyone who enjoys 80's music/love stories.

A little film released in 1983 Entitled: 'Valley Girl" is famous for two reasons:
1.) Nicolas Cage, stars as Randy in his first major screen role.
2.) Frank Zappa's song of the same name is nowhere to be found here.

The movie is a whole 'nother matter as we are here to listen to the soundtrack CD of the music heard in this film. This CD is famous for two things:
1.) The Plimsouls were introduced to the world with their appearance as the band in the Hollyweird club that Randy likes to hang out in.
2.) Frank Zappa's song of the same name is nowhere to be found here.

Well, there's a little more to this CD than those two things mentioned above.
As I cannot speak for the boys and girls of the valley, who can be sure just what they listened to? Frank Zappa, might have gagged them with a spoon. And Sparks may have reminded those kiddies of a creepy uncle that lurked behind bushes near the playground of Valley High School. We may never know what angst was in the pants of the teenagers of the valley in 1982.

What we do know is that: "Who Can It Be Now?" by Men At Work was a worldwide smash hit and "Love My Way" by Psychedelic Furs was playing on car stereos cruising the streets every night in that valley.

Josie Cotton, (who?) is featured on this disc for a record three selections: "Johnny Are You Queer?" "He Could Be The One" & "School Is In" and Josie, (a veteran of the same club scene as the very popular band the Go Go's) all but out Go-Go's that band with her appearance here and in the film (at the prom while Tommy and Randy are fighting) and her perfomance of these pop music gems found here on this disc.

The Plimsouls are the band that save this collection from being a bit too candy-coated. This group represents Randy's Hollyweird world as he takes Julie to the Sunset Strip bar where this band is playing. The Plimsouls are high-energy power pop in the same manner of The Who of 1966/67, and they steal the show on both the movie and this disc as being something extra special. I'm really glad to have discovered their great music through this movie. With: "A Million Miles Away" "Everywhere At Once" & "Oldest Story In The World" featured here, there are great examples of their music represented here.

From: Pat Travers ("I La La La Love You") to The Flirts (Juxebox") and Sparks ("Angst In My Pants") to the huge hit: "I Melt With You" by Modern English you will find some of the early eigthies greatest pop music on this disc and it's a fun look into a time of almost 30 years ago. This is a very nice collection of some hits and some music that should have been hits.
Four Stars!

If you've seen the movie and liked the songs, you will love this soundtrack. It is unfortunate that there are two different soundtracks available instead of just combining both of them. This was a gift for a friend that I remembered we used to watch the movie when we were younger so many times. She really enjoys it. I thankfully have both sound tracks!

If you love popular 80's music, this CD is a must have. I told a friend I watched the movie recently. She said she loved Valley Girl. I thought that I'd get her the CD for a Christmas present. I also bought myself a copy. Then I couldn't wait until Christmas to give it to her. When I met up with her on her birthday, it had been a rough day, this CD made her day happy. We've both been listening to this CD ever since. It's completely and totally awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative 80's soundtrack.

I absolutely love this soundtrack featuring, amongst others, the brilliant Psychedelic Furs and The Plimsouls, more of an alternative sound than the generic stuff you find on 80's radio stations etc. The only low points are the 3 Josie Cotton tracks, I just don't think they gel with the rest of the album and I always skip them.
