      JOHN WILLIAM CASILEAR (NY/VT, 1811-1893)

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Miniature Landscape of a Fisherman on a River, with Distant White-Capped Mountain (an old inscription on backing indicating this is Mount Chocorua, White Mountains, NH), oil on canvas, loose, no stretcher, unsigned, also inscribed on backing as being by Casilear, and stylistically consistent. Housed in an American red walnut molded cove frame with ebonized ranks, gilt liner, OS: 6 3/4" x 8 1/4", SS: 3" x 4 1/2". Fine condition. Casilear was a member of the Hudson River School of painters in the mid-late 19th c. Born in New York City, his initial artistic bent was satisfied by working as an engraver, where he met fellow engraver Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886), who would become a close friend and influence, and leader of the Hudson River movement after the death of Cole. After traveling to Europe with Durand, Kensett and Rossiter, Casilear developed his painting skills sufficiently to be named a member of the National Academy by 1851. He ended his days in the upstate New York resort town of Saratoga Springs.

      Feb. 09, 2019

JOHN WILLIAM CASILEAR Hudson River Landscape

      Est: $20,000 - $40,000

View of Lake George, with cows in the foreground, attributed to Casilear (American, 1811-1893). Oil on canvas. Measures 20" x 30" in 28" x 38" frame. Apparently unsigned. Could be a view of Cook Mountain from Spencer Point in Ticonderoga or possibly a view from Bolton Landing across the lake. In addition to the age, subject and style: 1) The canvas is stamped "William Schaus, 303 Broadway" etc. According to Malcolm Goldstein's Landscape with Figures, Casilear's art was sold through Schaus' gallery. 2) The 303 Broadway address was Schaus' location from 1854-1855. According to multiple biographies of Casilear, the artist began focusing on landscape painting in 1854, and views of Lake George were his most frequent subjects. 3) The center of this painting depicts a sidewheeler -- a steamboat -- and the only steamboats with that shape were the John Jay, which ran from 1850-56 and the Minne Ha Ha, which ran from 1857-78. All in all, an easy attribution.

      John W. Casilear (1811-1893)

      Est: $100 - $150

John W. Casilear (1811-1893) American landscape artist belonging to the Hudson River School. Casilear was born in New York City. His first professional training was under prominent New York engraver Peter Maverick in the 1820s, then with Asher Durand, himself an engraver at the time. Casilear and Durand became friends, and both worked as engravers in New York through the 1830s. By the middle 1830s Durand had become interested in landscape painting through his friendship with Thomas Cole. Durand, in turn, drew Casilear's attention to painting. By 1840 Casilear's interest in art was sufficiently strong to accompany Durand, John Frederick Kensett, and artist Thomas P. Rossiter on a European trip during which they sketched scenes, visited art museums, and fostered their interest in painting. Casilear gradually developed his talent in landscape art, painting in the style that was later to become known as the Hudson River School. By the middle 1850s he had entirely ceased his engraving career in favor of painting full-time. He was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1851, having been an associate member since 1831, and exhibited his works there for over fifty years. Casilear died in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1893. Today examples of his art are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, and Ringwood Manor, Ringwood, NJ. Original engraving, title "A SIBYL". Engraved in 1847 for the American Art-Union; after a painting by Daniel Huntington. The American Art Union was a major force in the development and promotion of American art. The print was reissued in 1880 by The American Art Review, the leading art publication of the 1880s, and a devoted supporter of the Etching Revival. This is the 1880 edition. Image approx. 9 7/8" x 7 5/8".
