Real height of actresses

Discussion

Hello everyone, I'm kind of new to KDrama, however there is something I have been wondering about ever since I saw the respective dramas. The real height of actresses. (A lot of free time on my hands, as you can see, thanks to the pandemic)

Please note that my intention is not to offend these actresses in any way, I just wanted to discuss this with other KDrama related people as grown ups, which I hope is understood.

As I've been looking into the actors and actresses of the KDrama world, I noticed that there might be incorrect information regarding their height, mostly for women. The strongest examples I can offer are Park Bo-young and Park Min-young.

In the case of Park Bo-young, her summary mentions that she is 1.58m, but seeing her next to other actors, it's crystal clear that she is not. For example, as a point of reference, Park Bo-young next to Song Joong-ki (1.78m) has a much bigger difference than Song Hye-kyo next to Song Joong-ki, even though the latest is supposed to be only 3 cm taller than her (1.61 m).

As for Park Min-young, in her summary is stated that she is 1.64m, which again compared to other actresses of her height, seems not to be true at all. For instance, next to Ji Chang-wook (1.78m), there's quite a big height difference, even when she's on 12cm heels, which would mean that she would be 1.76m (1.64m +12cm heels), only 2cm (!) shorter than him. Also, when compared to Nam Ji-hyun, who has also starred next to Ji Chang-wook, and who is mentioned to be 1.62m (meaning 2cm shorter than PMY), you can see that even when she's on trainers, she still looks taller than Park Min-young on trainers as well, next to Ji Chang-wook.

What would you think their real heights are? I would say, Park Bo-young is around 1.51m and Park Min-young around 1.59m.

Do you have any other examples that you would like to give?

Thank you in advance.

In the acting world, heights are always exaggerated.

Tom Cruise is a famous example.

Also I saw Emma Watson in person, her official height is listed at 5'5 but she was at least an inch and a half shorter than me and I'm barely 5'4.

Not just the acting world! In the US, people love to add a couple inches to their height. It's real cute when guys tell me they're 6 feet tall but my 5'9" self can see the top of their heads. Girls do it too sometimes. I think it's a sort of status symbol for a lot of people and I've heard it's similar in Korea.

The dudes do that because some girls use 6 feet as cut off. Kinda lol

Yeah it's just always painfully obvious when they're lying

This is not racist. I am merely describing my own experience. Furthermore, I am Asian myself. Is it not interesting to learn how people from Asia differ from Asians overseas? Our outer appearance might be similar, but our thinking patterns are totally different. This is influenced by cultural aspects such as religion.

Thanks, at least I'll get a point of reference!

Haha human rulers this hilarious somehow thanks for sharing but yeah there are lots of ways to heights except from heels

u/UnitedSandwich avatar

Keep in mind that sometimes they will have the male lead stand with his legs spread to reduce his height, or will put the female lead on a box, so that there is less height difference. There are a few examples of this in the the behind the scenes for Crash Landing on You. That's not to say that heights aren't misrepresented, but that it gets harder to compare based on what you see on the screen.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

Oh, yes I know. I've also been on filming sets in Europe, so I know how they work. It's just that when actors/actresses choose to lie about their height, is usually a one or two cms, only to help with casting, but it looks as if in these cases, they rounded their height more than 5-6cm

Edited

Park Bo-young is around 1.51cm

I think you mean metres, not centimetres 😂..I am 151cm myself, if I ever meet Park Bo-young, I will let you know. I think judging from pics alone is really hard because you don't know what type of shoes they are wearing. Male celebrities can also be wearing shoes with hidden heels?

But generally, I think it is very common for celebrities to inflate their height on their bios, so I would not be surprised if they are shorter than they claim to be.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

yes, thank you! 😂 In all of the photos, videos I've watched, I noticed the shoes of both leads and it's one of the reasons I came to this conclusion. I'm 1.58 and one of my best friends is 1.87 and if you see us side be side, there is a shorter height diference than PBY and Park Hyung Sik (1.83m) in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Compare PBY with LKS here. She is wearing heels in the photo. I would assumed PBY without heels would be at LKS torso.

It's the same.

More replies

Good question. Same here with Kim Ji-won. She's listed as 5 feet 5 inches (sorry in the US) while Park Shin-hye is 5 feet 6 inches. In the Heirs KJW is wearing high, high heels while PSH is wearing flats that I can't believe there's only an inch difference. KJW looks petite against Kim Woo-bin and Lee Min-ho while PSH, not so.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

Ah, yes, good point as well! She seems to have "helped herself" with a few extra cms

[deleted]
[deleted]

How is KJW with Park Seo Jun & Jin Goo?

Sorry haven't seen Fight for My Way nor Descendants of the Sun. But have seen YouTube videos of PSJ and KJW and she's with very high heels and PSJ is as tall as Kim Woo-bin and Lee Min-ho or around there.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I have watched Dots though KJW is usually wearing Boots due to her roles.

Fight for my way i can't really judges as i did not watched.

More replies
u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

Jin Goo is 1.78, so she looked very good with him. With Park Seo-joon, even though there was a much more visible height difference, it's not even close to the difference he had with Park Min-young wearing high heels, so I'm sure that Kim Ji-won is taller than PMY, but most likely has increased her height by a few centimetres.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I just check for both WWWSK & Fight for my way press conference,Kim Ji Won is definitely taller than PMY by looking at their high heels.

Looking again,Kim Ji Won head is level with PSJ lower lips, while PMY is at PSJ neck even if they were not wearing heels.

Not to be that one but some people looks taller or shorter with diffrent people , I mean I am not short nor very tall either 171 cm but when I am with my friends that are quite shorter than me I kind of melt into the background and look to have a similar height I think this is partly because I slouch a bit which these actresses would never do with their perfect posture but partly is because of maybe body build, like I have long uppertorso byt "shorter legs " in comparison to my upperbody so that probably plays into my length camouflage like the friends of mine that are kind of stronger and have more mucles ( this also gives them a lot better posture then me) seem to be almost as tall as me or sometimes even taller even though they actually are shorter than me , If I were to stand next a person to person that was quite taller than me, for example my younger sister that is around 6-8 cm taller than me I would look a bit petite even though I am not mostly because (and I am not proud to admit this and trying change it : I am just skin and bones) but since I not in fact so much shorter said tall person I will kind of blend in

Wow I really made that complicated but the moral of the story was it is difficult to compare peoples length with just the naked eye other factors as bodybuild, dimensions and like even hair matters ( I am constantly wearing a ponytail guess that adds a cm or not?)

I've thought about this too, it's pretty often that I don't think the official height we read is valid.

Btw, one of the things I adore about kdrama is that the FL can be much shorter than the ML, and it's perfectly fine, she's not expected to wear heels, which is not really what the standard is where I come from

Oh, big height gap is my weakness! I always say, that I want tall bf coz it's convenient to wear any heels, but I know, that I won't wear them everyday and just we'll be cute petite girl near him😊 btw, I think it's better to be short, than tall, everyone think you are cute, so don't be shy👌

But cuteness and convenient are not only options😂 https://pm1.narvii.com/6928/f4010f5df8ebf8f88fb0d6ade81d3def49f30899r1-1024-851v2_uhq.jpg

Whenever Park Hyung Sik have to kiss Park Bo Young,he has to bend down.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

I remember, poor guy.. Her not wearing heels didn't help at all as well. Especially that kiss at the beach must have been painfull because of the shot where they showed their feet, so they couldn't get her on a box.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Yea definitely felt bad for him. I think it fine if the actress is slightly shorter or wear minimal heels(that don't show off that they are really that short) than ML.

I didn't watch them, droped this drama before kisses, so dunno. I remember Japanese anime Toradora, this is who really suffer😅 just search pictures of main characters

[deleted]
[deleted]

Man just search that. I guess generally Asian are shorter than European.

I am a guy with a height of 1.6cm & my female cousin is literally 1.57cm.

I think, it's true, I'm girl of your height, and I'm shorter than many of my friends. But I have average height for women.

Yep, Asian men are usually short, but anime has own rules for this case😂 poor guy he was 50cm(?) taller than his girl

At the same time, in West it can be true: very tall boy+very short girl

Yes, I cryed! I sent it to my tall friends with word "big height gap is so cool, they say..." He didn't appreciate, coz he has revise problem, to lean to everyone😅

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

I can imagine 😂 I always feel kind of bad for really tall people because I think of the struggles they must face daily, when their loved ones are much shorter

Jo In Sung & Lee Kwang Soo height difference is not too far.

I believe JIS is 1.85 & LKS is at least 1.9cm.

After checking on female actress,i didn't know Kim Tae Hee(rain wife),Nam Ji Hyun & Song Hye Kyo are short.

I know IU & Park Bo Young are definitely not tall.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Wow, Kim Yoo-jung is (presumably) taller than the actresses you mentioned. She feels like she should be shorter than 165 cm.

[deleted]
[deleted]

I believe the 3 Kims( Yoo Jung,Sae Ron & So Hyun) should be about 1.65.

These 3 actress are not that tall.

It’s common to pad height, even in real life. I’ve had some people I know do it. For what reason, I really don’t know 🤷‍♀️

Some actors really come across as so tall onscreen I don’t doubt their declared height. Lee Min Ho and Kim Woo Bin in The Heirs basically towered over everyone else in the main cast.

u/jumiyo avatar

I wonder if male heights are inaccurate too then 🤔

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

I'm sure there must be cases of actors rounding their height to an inch or so, however, since 85% of the male actors in KDramas are quite tall, I don't think they need it as much as the actresses. Do you have anyone in mind?

u/jumiyo avatar

No I just mean everyone’s height might be rounded up regardless of male or female. I don’t think Korean females care about their height as much as Korean males so that’s why I’m thinking it might be males too.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Kwang soo height definitely rounded off slightly but he is definitely 1.9cm.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

It could be... males seem to be more cautious about it in general, but I also think it's up to the respective agency and how they want to present them

Yeah, especially in the younger generation of the current 'trendy' actors, a good number of them are at least 6 feet tall so there wouldn't be much need to lie about that.

Off the top of my head, Park Bo-gum, Park Hyung Sik, Lee Min Ho, Park Seo Joon, Kim Woo Bin, Jang Kiyong, Lee Jong-suk and both leads in Start-up (Nam Joo-hyuk and Kim Seon-ho) all are 6' or taller. The height difference between Rowoon and Kim Hye Yoon in Extraordinary You was pretty funny.

Even the older generation of the top Korean actors are quite tall. Gong Yoo, Kwon Sang Woo, Jang Dong Gun and So Ji Sub are 6', Lee Dong Wook, Song Il Gook and Hyun Bin are 6'1 and Jung Woo Sung and Choi Jin Hyuk are 6'2.

And most of the former idols-turned-actors tend to be tall. Cha Eunwoo, Rowoon, and Chanyeol (except poor Im Siwan haha).

[deleted]
[deleted]

That is when you assume that idols are speaking the truth. Most idols-turned-actors are not tall at all, as idols are notorious known for lying about their height. Although Cha Eun-woo, Rowoon and Chanyeol are indeed tall. Although it must be stated that outside Rowoon, the other two are not supertall in comparison to the actors you listed, whilst they look like absolute giants next to their members.

Furthermore, almost all famous actors are quite tall. Especially the old ones such as Yoo Ji-tae, Park Sung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon, Cha Seung-won, Gang Dong-won and Lee Ki-woo. The thing is that I think they are actually getting smaller by generation, because there are so many idols turning actors and because many use shoe lifts nowadays. The reason I think idols are smaller is because they are scouted when they were kids, so there is no way that these scouts would know the adult height (unless they did a bone scan or something). For actors, who debut when they are adults, they always select based on heights. The only exception forms the child actors, who are most of the time quite small as well.

Can't speak for every person on your list but several of those actors have profile heights which are exaggerated.

Seo Kang Joon is definitely not 183cm or 6'. He is 176-178cm. That's around 5'9"-5'10".

Park Seo Joon profile height is 185cm which is basically 6'1". He is however closer to 5'11"-6' (181-183cm) as seen when he's on Running Man next to the members there.

Most actors do exaggerate their height regardless of how tall they are. There's always a few cm added to boost them.

u/lockupseungri avatar

You said "several" on the list are exaggerated but the only one you clearly debunked was Seo Kang Joon.

None of us have a ruler to measure them, so none of us can say with certainty how tall they are to the exact centimeter.

Apart from Seo Kang Joon, I don't think any actors listed above are shorter than 6 feet. And I didn't include Jo In Sung who is also at least 6' or Lee Kwang Soo who is the tallest at 6'4, I'm positive he's not exaggerating his height either.

Edited

I gave a couple examples to prove a point. Do you expect me to go through them one by one?

I'm sorry if oppar isn't as tall as you want them to be.

Joo Won profile height 185cm. Pretty clear he isn't even 6' when he's been seen in press conferences or varieties next to people who've had their heights measured.

Gong Yoo profile height is 183cm. That's 6' except he is clearly not 6'. Once again, in press conferences he is evidently shorter than that. Closer to 5'10" or around 178cm.

Kwon Sang Woo is an obvious 5'11". Again, been on Running Man next to members who are 5'9" and was definitely not 6'.

You don't need rulers to measure them. In most cases, their proportions give them away.

Like I don't need to literally start going through all of them. Aside from a few people, most actors and actresses lie about their heights. Even the ones who are actually tall.

Claudia Kim is definitely taller than LSK and LDH, but to be fair all three are not extraordinarily tall. 175-178cm is fairly common for Western females, so I cringe a little when they are always complaining about how difficult it is to be tall... Even girls at 170cm complain. I think anything between 165-178cm should be doable to find a partner or not dwarf a male co-star. There are plenty of Korean actors above 6ft.

u/lockupseungri avatar

How is 175-178 cm or 5'9 to 5'10 fairly common for western females? That is tall for women even in northern European countries (the Swedish female average is 165.6cm).

I am American, 5'4 and when I wear high heels I am easily taller than 90% of the girls around me who are wearing flats. What western females are you referring to?

Yes.

Most actor and actresses height in Korea (and America too by the way) are exaggerated.

For example, OP talks about Song Joong Ki. He is not 178cm which is 5'10". He was on Running Man and it's pretty clear his height is somewhere around 173-175cm which is 5'8"-5'9".

Korea cares a lot about these things, it's not just actresses but also singers and idols. It's not just height, but weight and age too. For instance, Bora (now actress, former Sistar) and Hyolyn (former member of Sistar), it was first revealed after they left their company, that during their 7 years as Sistar, that their birthday dates were fake with the sole purpose to make them younger in Korean age reckoning. Also their weights can also be listed unreasonably low. So manipulating their height is not uncommon.

Lol. Are you serious? Asians are not all the same. Same as Europeans. Some are shorter, some are taller. E.g. Koreans and North Chinese are generally tall, the tallest Asians and taller than South Europeans on average. Japanese for example are relatively short on average height. North Europeans are on average taller than South Europeans or Americans except for people from former Yugoslavia.

No oppa for me, though I understand why there's this wave of women and girls fangirling over them. They are excellent actors/singers etc (most of them) and quite good looking.

Before I started this discussion, I hadn't thought of men adding up centimetres or inches to their height, as it seemed as something not necessary, but after people started pointing it out, I find it quite possible.

Add me to wondering how tall the actors are. I look them up and most of them state 6' and I don't believe it. I find that I try to compare how tall an actor is to an actress but sometimes it's hard.

I was watching Hotel Del Luna and looked up Yeo Jin Goo's height. I don't believe he's 5'10" but I've never met him. I would think he's maybe 5'8". Fudging heights isn't new. I think the ideal height for a guy would be 6' for actors.

158 cm is still short though? I'm 152 cm and I can tell that Park Boyoung cannot be 151 cm because I have shorter legs and torso than her. Heck, she's even slightly taller than Kim Seulgi despite Kim Seulgi also supposedly being 158 cm. Plus if she were 151 cm she would be around ex-Tiny G members Mint and Dohee's height (Mint is the second girl from the left and Dohee is the fourth girl with pigtails) since they're both 150 cm. But you can see that Park Boyoung has a longer torso and legs than them.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

You have a point about her not being 151cm because of the comparison with the group members you mentioned, however in the photo from the press conference, she is wearing 15cm heels, whilst Kim Seulgi is wearing 12cm. (Also, it looks like Kim Seulgi is a few centimetres shorter than stated).

I know, you will ask how can I know this. As I consider my self short as well, I own over 20 pairs of high heels, from 10cm to 15cm, so I can tell which is which. Now about her legs and torso length, the camera angle and the height of their heels really help them look much taller than they are. In conclusion, as you said, I realize that she might not be 151cm, but she's definitely not more than 154cm.

Also, if you do the math, her supposedly being 158cm, wearing a 15cm shoe would make her 173cm. Jo Jung-suk is mentioned to be 175cm (which seems to be true), so she would only be 2cm shorter than him. And in that photo there's a much bigger height difference than 2cm, I would say around 7cm. Again, if we take 2cm of Jo Jung-suk's shoes, the difference would be around 5cm.

I feel like this meme where the guy is analyzing information on a white board 😂

[deleted]
[deleted]
Edited

Isn't 154cm pretty much close to 151cm? When I converted those to feet and inches (because I'm more used to measuring height that way), it says 151cm is about 4'11" and 154cm is about 5'0", and being 5'0" myself, I can see that Park Boyoung is taller than 5'0". And 158cm is what, only 5'2"?

Here's a picture I found on Google featuring a random 158cm girl standing next to a 180cm guy. You can see that she still looks pretty short even though she's wearing heels, and the height difference between her and the guy is similar to Park Boyoung and Jo Jong Suk.

u/UnderPreasure1982 avatar

Thank you so much for replying! In centimetres, 3cm, are a height difference that you can tell if you look. You won't see it from a afar, but if you see two people next to one another, you can tell. This picture is a bit misleading because the guy is standing a few inches closer to the camera which makes him look taller. Not much taller, but still. Also, the guy is 5cm taller than Jo Jong Suk and the girl is wearing 12cm heels, compared to Park Bo-young wearing 15cm. The thing is, now that I look both pictures, I suspect that PBY might look even shorter because of how amazingly thin she is.

Hi, I'm also wondering about this since I'm 5'7 and often wondering how would I look like next to Korean male celebrities. I looked at some idols/actresses who are 5'7 and when they're with male actors who's 6ft with 5 inches heels, I'm confused on why the males are still 2 inches taller than them? Shouldn't they be the same height?

When I look at them barefoot, the woman looks 5 inches shorter. But with 5 inches heels, why does the man look 2 inches taller? My theory is the men wear elevator shoes. And elevator shoes are typically added between 2 to 3 inches to their height.

Actually height are more important to men than women because generally men (especially in entertainment industry) are expected to be tall while for women, tall or short it's generally okay as long as they're pretty. I believe some actors added 1 inch to his height to seem taller than they are. I still don't know who but I believe there are many, especially men.

And for women, I have a theory that those who added their height are shorter than 5'5, and there are also female who substract their actual height to appear shorter, usually those who are over 5'7 (I don't know who yet, but I strongly believe this) xD

I have some names in mind but it's too long to explain🤭
