The Rhode Island Supreme Court overturned Claus von Bülow's attempted murder convictions 40 years ago Saturday.

NBC 10's coverage on April 27, 1984, included a report by investigative reporter Jim Taricani, who interviewed von Bülow at his New York apartment that day about the prospect of a new trial.

The society figure was accused of trying to kill his wife by giving her an overdose of insulin in 1979 and again in 1980.

Heiress Sunny von Bülow remained in a persistent vegetative state for 28 years until her death in 2008.

Von Bülow's first trial in 1982, in Newport, attracted worldwide attention. He was acquitted at his second trial in Providence in 1985.

Claus von Bülow died in 2019.
