Face masks are important on the job, but they are not all created equal. When choosing a face mask, you need to make sure it suits the work you are doing. Some types like a N95 Mask provide better protection than standard masks for sale. Here at Canberra Diamond Blade Suppliers, we deliver N95 masks Australia wide as well as locally across Canberra.

Face Masks explained: Comparison of P2 vs N95 in Australia

A P2 face mask and a N95 face mask are similar. It’s just that N95 face masks comply under American testing requirements. The full respirator code name for a P2 facemask is “Face Filtering Piece 2” -FFP2 Mask.

These terms are used interchangeably and a N95 respirator in Australia is considered equivalent to P2 face masks which meet Australian Standard: AS/NZS 1716:2012

According to 3m “respirators certified as meeting these standards can be expected to function very similarly to one another, based on the performance requirements stated in the standards and confirmed during conformity testing.”

A P2 mask provides protection against ≥94% of very small (0.3 – 0.6 micron) non-oil based airborne particles.

If you are looking where to buy masks, we deliver N95 Masks Australia wide and they are currently in stock and for sale.

How does a N95 Mask work?

Depending on the work you are doing, you need to make sure that you use the correct types of facial protection. If you buy masks that are not suited to your job, they can give you a false sense of security – and may not protect you from breathing in airborne particulates. Depending on the task, a dust mask or surgical mask may not be suitable PPE for your activity.

A N95 or P2 disposable particulate respirator will you some protection against mechanically generated dust on worksites as well as general airborne particles, gases or vapours in air pollution.

They are the most convenient type of particulate respirator. These face masks are easy to put on and don’t take up much room in your bag. While they provide protection against airborne particles like dust, mist and fumes, they don’t protect you from gases, chemicals and vapours.

Disposable P2 masks provide a very close facial fit and work by filtering out particles in the air as you breath it through the material filter.

It is advisable to wear a properly fitted mask whenever you are producing dust such as cutting, doing demolition, or sweeping debris. A N95 face mask is also useful against air pollution smog as it prevents airborne particles from being breathed in. They are also being used in circumstances for virus control as they offer stronger protection than a basic face covering.

P2 and N95 masks can filter out PM2.5 particles from the air. They are typically used on building sites and by firefighters. They filter out the harmful particles in the air,  but are only effective if there’s an air-tight seal around the face- so you can’t have a beard for this to be effective.

Wearing a N95 face mask increases your safety when properly used. It is compatible with a large range of protective eyewear and hearing protection.

Note: A P2 Mask can protect people from air pollution due to fires in their vicinity, but are not designed for use in active fire fighting as disposable respirators do not supply oxygen.

Different shapes of a respirators

So you need a P2 respirator and then you are confronted with a sea of choice in terms of shape. What is the difference in all these P2 Masks? Which P2 Mask should I buy?

what's the difference in p2 mask shapes

Cup Style

These are often the shape you will see on the construction site. These are made of firm material that is contoured into a comfortable cup shape.

The Honeywell, Maxi Safe and Colad P2 masks in the illustration above are all cup respirators and this shows how they can even look a bit different from one another.

These type of masks are stacked together within the box and have no folds. The benefit of these is that due to their firmness, their material does not move toward your face when you breath. They usually come in 10-20 piece boxes.

Flat Fold Shape

The most common N95 Masks in medical settings are the flat fold P2 mask like the orange Proshield, 3M 9502+ Kn95, or the Honeywell in the illustration above. These are often also called a pleated N95 mask. Flat Fold types are easy to store in large quantities, or to slip into your pocket or bag. They come in box quantities anywhere from 10 per box to 50 per box so are the best type of N95 mask online buying due to the ease of postage.

As the name suggests, when in storage the flat fold type lay flat up against one another. They may be folded vertically or horizontally and can have just one, or multiple folds.

You can see the 3m P2 mask, like the 3M Aura has two folds, one at the top and one at the bottom. Leaving the centre of the 3M P2 mask flat. Whereas the MSA Affinity has the fold vertically through the middle.

Depending on how they are folded, and how they look when wearing. They may also be referred to as a duckbill. This is often the name used when the fold is horizontal across the centre like the Pro Choice in the illustration above, giving the wearer the appearance of having a beak.

Who should not wear one?

Children

N95 respirators are not designed for children for two reasons. The first being that they are one size fits most adults. So are not designed for the small face sizes of kids.

The other reason is that a N95 respirator can actually endanger your child with a risk of suffocation. As children breath a lot lighter than adults, they have difficultly drawing enough oxygen through the strong filter.

Facial hair

If you have a beard you are part of another group of people who won’t get the full benefit of a P2 respirator. The facial hair prevents an airtight fit, exposing you to the particulates that you are meant to be protected from. So, if you need a P2 respirator for work and you sport a beard, you may need to look at other protective respirators or choose to get out your razor.

If you don’t want to loose your beard, you can still wear a respirator and it will still provide better protection than a surgical mask. But you won’t be getting the ≥ 94% or ≥ 95% that your mask can normally achieve without the beard.

Chronic breathing conditions

Lastly, people with with chronic respiratory, cardiac, or other medical conditions that affects breathing should ask their doctor before they buy P2 Masks. This is because a P2 respirator mask can make it more difficult to breathe.

What are respirators with breathing valves for?

If you choose a mask with an exhalation valve, it is designed to minimise moisture and heat build up. This makes it more comfortable to wear and easier to breath if wearing for longer periods of time.

A valved P2 mask is a comfort feature, but does not increase the protection in construction scenarios. The valve is actually a one way valve, so you breath in filtered air, but when you breath out the air passes through easily as it is not filtered. N95 respirators with exhalation valves are great for construction and industry applications, but should not be used when sterile conditions are needed.

We offer both valved and non valved N95 masks for sale.

Safe Use Guidelines in Australia

Once you are wearing your respirator you need maintain awareness so you don’t compromise the fit (and your protection). So many times we see people wearing n 95 masks over their mouth, with their nose out. It defeats the purpose, if you are going to wear one then make sure you are wearing it properly.

Don’t

– touch the P2 respirator mask while it is on your face

– reuse the P2 respirator masks after they have been removed

– leave the P2 mask hanging around your neck or sitting on your head.

Do

– use a new P2 respirator mask when it becomes moist or dirty

– wash your hands after taking off your P2 mask

If you would like to use an occupational/ home use P2 masks for medical purposes, you need to conduct your own investigation into medical regulations. You can contact the brand’s manufacturing company to determine whether they are suitable for your medical application.

A N95 respirator mask without a valve is often used in medical situations when a standard facecovering is not sufficient. In Australia, N95 face masks are mostly used in construction and industrial settings. N95 face masks Australia filter the air that you breath in through extremely fine melt blown fabric material. P2 masks conform to Australian standards for P2 filtration against Australian Standard: AS/NZS 1716:2012.

How to fit P2 Masks

Generally, to check for proper fit, you should put on your P2 respirator and adjust the straps so it fits tightly but comfortably to your face. For information on proper fit of your P2 Mask, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

When fitting, it’s important to ensure that the fit is secure, as this will help to reduce the inhalation of particulate matter. Please see the step process from the Queensland, Government on how to fit your N95 face mask properly.

Performing a Fit Check

It is important that once you have put your P2 Mask on, that you check the fit.

  1. Press it onto your face to make sure there is a seal across your face, cheeks and the bridge of your nose. The P2 Mask must have a complete seal all around
  2. Check the positive pressure seal of the P2 Mask by gently exhaling. If air escapes, the P2 Mask needs to be adjusted.
  3. Check the negative pressure seal by gently inhaling. If the P2 Mask is not drawn in towards your face, or air leaks around the face seal, readjust and repeat process, or check for defects in the P2 respirator.
  4. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for fit checking of individual brands and types of P2/N95 masks Australia.
