Denmark was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany on April 9, 1940, and remained occupied until May 1945. But expatriate Danes fought with Allied armies, and the Danish resistance got all but eight Jews out and across the Baltic Sea to Sweden before the roundup began.
Some 1,800 Danish soldiers and 2,000 civilians died during World War II.
