The JW Marriott Essex House New York garners praise for its prime location near Central Park and its striking art deco atmosphere. While the rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and generous size, some guests express concerns about maintenance and dated decor. The hotel's amenities and responsive housekeeping receive commendation, although issues with minibar charges and service have been noted. Despite the hotel's inspiring environment, travelers caution that the value for money may fall short, pointing to overpriced services and additional fees.

This place feels like a self service apt than an iconic 5 star hotel. There is no water, no kettle/coffee maker in the room. We had to pick up water bottles everyday from the reception. After repeatedly asking for a kettle, they brought one but it was disgusting so I had to ask for hot water daily. If you don’t pay for a high floor Central Park view room, the chance of them giving you a generous upgrade is close to zero. They made it clear to us that they get a lot of ambassadors and titanium members, and there is only limited rooms for Marriott status upgrade. So work your totem pole. I would recommend bring your money and status else where, you might get a much better view room. One of the managers was nice enough to give us one category upgrade for titanium membership, the family suite was comfy in terms of the size, nothing luxurious. But seriously with no view, there is no point of staying in this location unless you think you are in love w the Central Park. The good restaurants and interesting scenes are mostly downtown. Lastly, the executive lounge is a joke, no window, the free breakfast is a 3 star max, not even a glass cup for your cappuccino. You have to pay to sit in their Southgate restaurant for the same breakfast. The only worthy pic of the hotel is the entrance flower bouquet and the chandelier hallway, there is no other interesting common area to enjoy yourself which is very much a design mistake. If you are used to Marriott JW Asian and Middle Eastern standards or even European 5 star standards, this hotel apart from its iconic status and location deserves a 3.5 star max. Of course they attribute the lack of service to Covid. The employees are overworked, often they mentioned they had to do 2-3 people’s jobs for the pay of one due to lack of workers. I feel for you, but if you are charging the rate you are charging, your clients expect a certain level of service.

We stayed in 2 rooms for a family trip. Cesar at the front desk was incredibly helpful in accommodating our needs and getting our stay off to an excellent start. Thank you Cesar! Everyone we encountered from Michael the bellman to housekeeping staff were all very helpful. Excellent service is what truly distinguishes the Essex House. We had adjoining rooms with partial park views. The concierge lounge is only available for Platinum members and only for breakfast but there are many great places to eat nearby. Morton Williams market is only 2 blocks away on 57th between 6th and 7th Ave and a good place to pick up water and snacks.

Upon arrival Ceaser warmly and expertly checked us in a few minutes early to a wonderful room with a view of Central Park, and then helped us extend our stay for an additional night, when we realized 1 night was just not long enough. Ceaser was very capable of providing attention to my husband and I as he was identifying the right room for us, while pausing briefly to help a colleague with issues she was unable to resolve and required his expertise. Our king room was small, but included all the necessities, and gave us the perfect quiet refuge to enjoy along with Carnegie Hall, Central Park and New York's wonderful restaurants. The comfortable bed, extra pillows and fabulous large shower were much appreciated. We enjoyed omelets, perfectly prepared potatoes and lots of hot delicious coffee for breakfast at the 1st floor restaurant. Although rather expensive, breakfast was appropriately priced for a luxury hotel at this location and both service and quality were excellent. The hostess kindly seated us by the window upon request and the Restaurant Manager stopped at the table to welcome us and ensure we were enjoying our meal. Covid safety protocols were graciously followed, so we felt comfortable dining. The valet and concierge staff were extremely kind and helpful in every way from recommending restaurants to providing directions, to hailing a taxi for us at departure. We look forward to staying at the JW Marriott Essex House when we return to New York in the Spring.

My husband and I booked a night here at the JW Marriott Essex House, as our go to Marriott hotels, the St Regis and Ritz Carlton are currently closed. We drove our car to the hotel and valeted it. While we reside in NYC, I am initially from the Midwest, and therefore, my photo ID reflects that. The hotel associate asked me for the airport paperwork that must be filled out when visiting NY and I told her that I live in NY and therefore do not have paperwork. She accepted my response and promptly checked us in and even gave us late check out at 1 PM. We then rode up the elevator to our room. We walked into our room and found the bed covered in about 50 throw pillows and numerous stacked ice buckets and trays piled on the desk. I called down to the front desk to ask for a room change, as it seemed that we were accidentally given a room used for storage. An associate met us at our room with a new key for a new room on the same floor. I was secretly hoping for an upgrade at this point since the initial room was not acceptable. We were shown to our new room which was the same size as the first one. We quickly unpacked a few things and ordered an Uber to go to our dinner reservation in the Financial District. As we waited for the elevator to arrive, the same hotel associate reappeared and to our surprise, he said that his manager had approved an upgrade for us (we had not expressed our interest in one) to make up for their mistake with our first room. We were already running late to our dinner reservation so we accepted the upgrade as well as his offer to move our belongings to the new room.
The new room was slightly larger and had a gorgeous view of Central Park. However, I did find the room to be rather outdated in its design. Additionally, the bathroom was outfitted with a bathtub/shower combo and the bathtub was very high. At seven months pregnant, it was difficult for me to step in and out of the bathtub. There was no fan in the bathroom, resulting in the bathroom getting rather foggy and steamy when showering.
The TV responded quite slowly to the remote and did not have such a great selection of channels.
Lastly, throughout the night we were able to hear noise from the street below and it disturbed our sleep.
When it was time to check out the following day, the hotel associate at the front desk offered to email me the receipt for our stay. Once in the car and on our way, I opened the email and found that we were charged a $382 room change charge as well as $95 oversized car valet charge (the car in question is a 2016 Honda Pilot). I immediately called the front desk to dispute the room change charge and after much back and forth they agreed to refund the $382.
From all the glitches and lack of professionalism displayed by this hotel, I would not return or recommend this hotel to anyone. I sincerely hope that the category 8 Marriott hotels reopen soon.

Spent four days in NYC. Decided to spend one night at the JW Marriott and then extend if I liked it. After one day I was already packing my bags.

I have spent 30-40 nights / year in Marriott hotels (Platinium status) over the last 5 years and this was the worst experience I had.

Cons
* Very understaffed and it feels like 10% of the staff is doing 90% of the work.
* Unpleasant room service on the phone
* At 12:15pm, someone was banging on my door aggressively to ask me to check out
* Pricey rate ~ 450$/night esp. during covid
* Got a super noisy room next to the outdoor ventilation/heating(?) system with no view
* Rooms are quite small

Pros
* Location
* The lobby is beautiful

If you are looking for a premium experience next to Central Park, the Ritz Carlton is amazing even though it is closed temporarily. I wanted to try the JW Marriott but that was a mistake.

I will start by saying that i love Marriott brand, i always choose Marriott hotels over other hotels. We recently stayed at JW Marriott Essex House and had one of the most terrible experience ever. We drove all the way from Vermont to New York, so we can be there for New Year's Eve, it took us almost all night because of the winter storm, i called the hotel to ask if we can have an early check in and they said YES, which i really appreciated and was grateful for, but.... When we finally got there and after checking in and going to the room the front desk clerk start calling the room to say that they can't find the keys to our truck, which we gave to the valet driver, they called our room nonstop since we arrived that they could not still find the truck keys. The next day, our check out day...it took them forever to bring our truck upfront, we called the desk twice to make sure they did not forget about us, we gave back the green parking ticket which was suppose to be $95 and told them to charge it to the room. Next day when i got my hotel bill i found out that i was actually charged twice for parking, $190 ( for exceeding the 24 hour permit) and another separate charge in amount of another $190.00?????????? Very very disappointed with the stuff that never apologized for disturbing our stay or never called to notify us that they finally found our truck keys

I almost never write a review but the service at the Essex House for our stay here in NY has been so great I decided to write. The valet and bellman were both terrific, incredibly prompt, and helped answer all of our questions. But a special shout out to Melvin at the front desk. He worked super hard to ensure we were in a very quiet room and also helped figure out a room that would work for us since our daughter was unexpectedly traveling with us. Thank you Melvin and all of the staff at this beautiful hotel!

I truly loved my experience at the JW Marriott Essex House. The staff are amazing, and have an obvious commitment to customer service, assisting in celebrating a special occasion!

The hotel is a beautiful art-deco structure, in a prime location on Central Park. It’s very close to Times Square, and subway stations.
The lobby was large and clean, with a throwback style, and helpful staff. Check in was a breeze, with my bags being taken up to my room for us as our room wasn’t quite ready.

We spent two nights in a Manhattan view suite, which was an amazing room. The room was huge, with an amazing large terrace with great views of the Manhattan skyline, including some of the biggest buildings. The living area included a separate sitting area, a desk, and a large sectional couch. The bathroom was large, spacious and modern, with a separate shower / soaker tub.

The separate bedroom was also large, with a very comfortable bed, and great views. We used the fitness centre twice, which had a great selection of equipment, including a peloton, and plenty of water! The restaurant was fast, and tasted great, and although I felt maybe the drinks were a bit overpriced, the $35 daily credit offset it. Platinum status meant access to the lounge, and Breakfast there was plentiful, fresh and tasted great.

All the staff were very friendly and genuinely interested in helping. I left something down in the gym, and called to see if anyone turned it in, and within 2 minute it was at my door.

I will definitely return, and in fact, won’t be staying anywhere else in Manhattan.

We stayed at this hotel in January and had a great stay. This July was horrendous. Pre pandemic we traveled extensively. Now, wanting to dip a toe into the travel scene again, we have booked a few trips. We still do have our Marriott platinum status.
I can’t begin to describe the horrible nature of our recent stay at this hotel. We were given a room after a long flight that had been flooded the night before. There were four intense hot blowers in the room blowing hot air everywhere, and yet we were given this room. We went to the front desk they gave us another room. This room was like an icebox box - literally. The temperature would not go above 63°. We finally had the engineer come, and he said oh well the heat is off in the hotel. Nothing I can do. Finally our third room was acceptable but we had other problems. There was no staff for the front desk, with one person and 30 people trying to check in. No room service. The restaurant was open limited hours with limited food. Our problem was just a total lack of personnel or any interest in making our stay even minimally acceptable. I won’t even mention all the details about the valet that did not deliver our car for 45 minutes past the requested time and we requested it the night before. Needless to say, our drive to Newark airport was filled with anxiety due to their lack of competency.
Run run run away!! Do not stay here!

We stayed here for one night. Due to COVID-19 the whole place felt deserted. Although my booking was under Marriott's platinum membership even then the lady did not give us a park view room, instead a back room with no view whatsoever.

I think this might be the only hotel in NYC that has muslim showers in its bathrooms. Clean, comfortable, I just wish the service would have been better.
