It'd be awesome to see a Columbia Pictures Ray Harryhausen Classics 4K Boxset.

Would have chosen the reverse colors for the spines and font for this set, otherwise it's just laziness repeating Columbia Classics Volume 3 spine/font color scheme.
Would have expected SLC Punk to be in a set with Lords of Dogtown.

Does this Box-Set also release in Europe?
The poor Euro paired with exorbitant Shipping costs prevails me from ordering this set form the States. 378,20$ really is a sum.
But I really would like it very much.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME still gets a pass here though because the writer and director are both gay. So theres the gays gaze.

Extremely unlikely. International rights for most of these are all over the place. They could do individual releases of specific titles in countries where they have the rights to them, but that's about it.

Guess I forgot mention, A League Of Their Own does have a dedicated 4K release in Austria of all countries. I found a link of it for sale on Amazon India: https://www.amazon.in/League-their-O.../dp/B08N4XW2WS

All this talk about gay cinema and SPC got me thinking about this excellent film. It was unfortunately buried in theatres during the peak of the pandemic. Otherwise I think it would have received more attention. Hopefully it will find an audience some day. I recommend it highly.

I’m surprised they included “Volver” over “Talk To Her”. The latter film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and also had a Best Director nom - rare for a foreign language film.

We've been using VOLVER nearly every semester for a certain class in recent years. I'm hoping some of its effects on students rubbed off to karmic buzz, or whatever universal buzz studios pay attention to! But yes, I'd like to see any kind of HD upgrade for the rest of the "missing" Almodovars, TALK TO HER, BAD EDUCATION, etc. I bought the UK Studio Canal box set to gain some of the rest...

Wow, massive boxset of films on 4K. Count me in, despite the hefty price tag!

Dr. Strangelove - standalone in the US in 2021
Gandhi - standalones in select European markets
A League of Their Own - no standalone anywhere
Jerry Maguire - standalones in select European markets

That makes 1 film released as a general standalone in the US, one as a steelbook standalone in the US, 3 in European markets only, and 1 nowhere in the world. Not great odds, two years out.

Columbia Classics set 2 - Oct 2021
standalone releases since then
Anatomy of a Murder - no standalones anywhere
Oliver - no standalones anywhere
Taxi Driver - no standalones anywhere
Stripes - no standalones anywhere
Sense and Sensibility - no standalones anywhere
The Social Network - no standalones anywhere

The standalones in Europe from Vol 1 came out in July 2021, 13 months after the boxset.

November is 13 months after Vol 2 and there's no sign of any of those titles getting standalones anywhere yet.

Anything could happen, they might all get standalones in every market on earth. Or they may never get them. That seems more likely to me, at this point.
Sooo, basically you just agreed with everything I stated lol… the first set does indeed have single releases for all of their UHD films, Mr. Smith goes to Washington and a League of their own may have been put out as single in another country but both are REGION FREE UHD so no reason a fan can’t import. I didn’t mention the singles came out a year later but when I stated the second set “will” too infers that the set would follow the pattern of the previous set so yes a year later and look we still have a couple of months to spare before announcement. The first set’s collection as singles if I recall correctly weren’t announced ahead of the preorders by very much time at all.
As far as that being unlikely as a release option, if the 4K Master of a film is already completed, it’s because there will be a release in that format. (Barring streaming for exclusivity or a title that so few purchased that it wasn’t profitable to press a large quantity. But hey, I ain’t saying I can’t be wrong but I will argue it’s More likely than less likely with past evidence contrary to Not likely.

The issue is that most of those standalones are not easy to buy for Americans. For example, I, for one, wouldn't order the Austrian standalone of A League of Their Own from India... Some of those editions might as well not exist for American customers. Also, many people prefer to have packaging in English, with the title in English, etc.

My point was that only one title from Vol 1 has had a wide, general release in the US.

If some of the titles from Vol 2 do end up getting released in Luxembourg and Liechtenstein in November, I'll still be glad I bought the US edition.

Also, those were major catalog titles. I somehow doubt The Celluloid Closet or Still Alice will be getting standalones in Belgium or Denmark in late 2023.

This is such an odd mishmash of flicks. There are a couple I'd really like to have (Volver, Devil's Backbone), a few I wouldn't MIND owning but could live without (Synecdoche, Orlando, Crouching Tiger, City of Lost Children) and the rest are various shades of "Meh". Never even heard of Still Alice, somehow. I guess I'll add it to my cart, wait for a price drop, and if it comes, buy it and flip the movies I don't care about. Someone will want them, I'm sure.

Still Alice is probably only there because Julianne Moore finally won her Oscar for it. The film itself is not a classic on the scale of The Lives of Others, for example.

I've never seen Still Alice, like most people, but I've heard from the one friend who did see it that it's good, for what that's worth.

Also surprised...wouldn't even place Volver in Almodovar's Top 5.

Would also have preferred 'House Of Flying Daggers' instead on 'Tiger'. Just imagine the Echo Game (drum) scene in Atmos or DTS:X!!

Only one in I'm really interested in is 'Synecdoche, New York'- have never seen it but fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Very little interest in other titles so an easy pass for me.

Just my 2 cents.

Flying Daggers only did $11 million in the US for SPC. It's not even in their top 10. It's number 19. Crouching Tiger grossed more than 11 times as much as Flying Daggers. With $128 million it's still SPC's top-grossing film in the US ever.

For those wondering why Volver and not some other Almodovar film, it's likely because Volver was Sony Pictures Classics's highest grossing Almodovar film in the US.

Still Alice also did a MUCH higher number than I thought, which explains its inclusion, along with Julianne Moore's Oscar. It was their #11 highest grossing film ever.

Here's a list of SPC box office champions:

Crouching Tiger was definitely a phenomena when it first came out. It took me almost 2 weeks to catch it at a non-sold out show.
