Career
Her first job was at CNN where she was hired as an intern in 1988. It was a difficult and low paying job, yet she slogged on. She even offered to cover for other reporters after her regular work shift as her own job was primarily off-camera.
By covering for other reporters over a period of five long years, she was able to build an on-air portfolio for herself. In August 1993, she sent her clips to the president of CNBC, Roger Ailes. He hired her promptly.
In 1995 she replaced Roy Blumberg as the analyst at CNBC and began reporting on live television from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It was the first ever time a journalist was reporting live from that venue and the fact that it was a woman who did it made the feat even more special.
Though groundbreaking, the task was far from easy for her. Often she found herself to be the only female on the floor and was sometimes ill-treated by the male traders. Yet the gutsy woman stood her ground and focused on her job.
During the 1990s she also became a frequent contributor to the ‘Market Watch’ and ‘Squawk Box’ segments. In 1997 she began anchoring ‘Business Center’, CNBC’s flagship primetime show along with Tyler Mathisen. She hosted the show for two years until 1999.
Over the years she became a very popular anchor. In 2002 she was made the original anchor of the CNBC News program, ‘Closing Bell’, named after the bell that is rung to signify the end of a trading session in New York Stock Exchange.
She appeared as herself in the 2003 documentary film, ‘Risk/Reward’ which is about the lives of four Wall Street women and the ups and downs they face as a result of their career.
In 2004, the program ‘The Wall Street Journal Report’ got a new anchor in the form of Maria who replaced Consuelo Mack. The show featured discussions, interviews, stock market updates, current economic issues, etc.
By now her popularity was sky high and she was flooded with offers to appear in films. She appeared in the film ‘The Talking of Pelham 123’ in 2009. The film, a thriller starring Denzel Washington was a box office hit.
She portrayed herself in the 2010 documentary film, ‘Inside Job’ which was about the world financial crisis that occurred during the late 2000s. The film studies how banking policies in the U.S. contributed to the crisis.
In addition to being a journalist, she is also the author of several books including the bestseller ‘Use the News: How to Separate the Noise from the Investment Nuggets and Make Money in Any Economy’ (2001).
After having worked with the CNBC for 20 eventful and productive years she left the channel in 2013 to join the Fox Business Network.
